“Meta has used back-to-school pictures of schoolgirls to advertise one of its social media platforms to a 37-year-old man, in a move parents described as “outrageous” and “upsetting.” Meta has 100% stopped even *pretending* not to be astoundingly evil. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

this endangers chdren when I worked with kids, we had disclaimers on every permission slip informing parents/guardians that we may take photos at events and trips, and they had to check that box if they didn't, we would be sure not to photograph their kids

Whether it's ads for pedophiles, AI that engages in sexting with children, supporting genocide in African nations, pushing AI softcore porn of celebrities, doing nothing about numerous consistent scam comments, or developing AI glasses that no one wants and do not work, Meta is going places!

Time for everyone to cut their ties with Meta. Remember that in 2016 they sold our data to Cambridge Analytics who targeted voters with misinformation to vote for Trump. CA bragged they helped Trump win the election. Maria Ressa stated Duterte followed the same playbook.

I’ve had IG recommend prom pics to me, a grown man who doesn’t want to see stranger’s prom pics… and even if I did - what kind of unhinged company would indulge that?

It may very well have been driven by algorithm not some person being like "I know what we should do!" But of course that doesn't make it better, in fact in terms of doing anything about it, it makes it worse.

It's almost like his one "good" idea (which, frankly? stolen) was a digital smash book that escaped containment and at this point is a stitched together empire of bloat made of reasonably good things he bought and made worse. No wait that's e x a c t l y what it actually is.

Remember when everyone kept copy/pasting that "hey FB, my pics belong to me, you don't have my permission to use them" post back in 2008? We all reminded users that when you create your account you agreed to them owning your pics, but no one listened? And now we're here! Stop using meta ffs!

The "back to school" parenting folks might want to meet up down the pub (or at the coffee shop) and show photos there. The Internet is about to get very unsafe for everybody. Most of us should create address books and get off Facebook.

Needless to say (or is it?) if you remain on Nazi websites you are contributing to the Nazi project. Get off all Meta sites. Get off X. Get off tiktok. It isn't worth the dopamine hits. You will still be able to reach your people.

Stop putting your kids on the mofo internet. Text grandma and auntie the photo. This isn't hard, people. How do you know some perv isn't wacking it to your kid? Does everyone have narcissistic personality disorders or what??????? Good lord.

The article did not mention whether any of these outraged parents deleted their accounts after this. They should be upset but it's also a problem if they didn't leave the platform immediately. I hope people start behaving more cautiously with what they post online. These companies can't be trusted.

"The 37-year-old Instagram user from London who received the posts and asked to remain anonymous said: “Over several days I was repeatedly served Meta adverts for Threads that exclusively featured parents’ images of their daughters in school uniform, some revealing their names.

"With 267 followers, her Instagram account usually had modest reach but the post of her child attracted nearly 7,000 views, 90% from non-followers, half of whom were aged over 44 and 90% of whom were men."

As a father, I find it deeply inappropriate for Meta to repurpose these posts in targeted promotion to adults." Can confirm that Meta "suggested posts" are fucked up and have nothing to do with actual user behavior. I never even click on reels, but Facebook kept recommending, over and over,

Even if your cursor hovers over a reel while scrolling the page, it'll show teens dancing in their underwear. I did click on one of these 3 years ago, trying to find the "..." button to make it go away, and ever since then I wonder if they put me on a special "suggested posts" list.

I only ever used Facebook to keep in touch with some local gaming and pagan groups that posted events there. I quit using it because it kept serving me Threads advertisements with videos of women breastfeeding.

endless short videos of egirl gooner content. Earlier this year they changed the algorithm I guess, because those were largely replaced with right-wing agitprop. Now THAT has mostly been replaced with reactionary slop, obvious genAI clips of stationary people holding signs about immigrants.

This is damning. "With 267 followers, her Instagram account usually had modest reach but the post of her child [the one advertised as suggested content] attracted nearly 7,000 views, 90% from non-followers, half of whom were aged over 44 and 90% of whom were men."

They’re not even bothering to enforce community standards on violent content re videos of Kirk shooting and disemboweled Palestinians. Each and every report I file is denied despite clear violations of their written policy. They apparently don’t give a shit.

I got suspended for a few days for posting a screenshot of a hateful message I got. I had originally posted it to a group, but it was reported for some reason. It was a message of someone saying that I should have my n-word brains beat out with a baseball bat.

If it's against MAGAts, it's enforced. If you compliment someone, your post is removed, but if you get death threats, that's totally fine. They've been fk'd up for 20 years, zuck isn't suddenly going to grow a soul.

What's most disturbing is that Meta likely didn't push the photos as a matter of policy, but rather their system determined that these photos resulted in the highest engagement/click-through rate for the recipient demographic.

I’ve been thinking recently about the whole “future is private” push they made in the cambridge analytica days, using the outrage from that as justification to further lock down their platform + login gate instagram.

Who knew a morally bankrupt, friendless incel who lucked out when the socially popular Winklevoss twins hired him to write some code for them, then teamed up with another coder to release the idea as his, would see nothing wrong with morally bankrupt behavior?

For a time, Facebook kept showing me "Reels" of scantily clad women, some appearing to be underage. It was really disturbing. Some even had brief nudity. They changed it to cooking demonstrations, which is fine now, but wtf

we dont need in depth reports and journalism for this. we just need any middle aged man to open the "for you" search on instagram to know what Meta is selling. my subscribes are fountain pens, national parks, puppies. my "for you" is half naked girls w/ captions that read "what I really want"

In the early days of FB algorithms, when I didn't have ad-blockers nor tracking containment, I claimed to be 98 years old. I got ads for mortgage refinancing ("for my parents" in one case) and everything else featured underdressed twenty-something women.

For about three months Google couldn’t decide if I was a doctor, lawyer, or professional industrial scuba diver. My ads mix was disjointed. No cleavage though.

Dude! My man. Simpatico! I am 1,000,000,000% agreeing with you. That’s the thing about the guardian signing statistics. My real life example is fucking creepy. I want nothing to do with 16-year-old showing cleavage. But Instagram pushes this stuff hard. It should be illegal, and is dangerous.
