Not sure if this means anything or not but when the Steam Machine was released I saw a small handful of people On Here talking about the reservation queue and how they wanted one and all that. Feels like I ain't seen a single peep about Steam Frame orders.

Everyone I’ve talked to about it wants one, but it’s cost prohibitive. In a different timeline I think this could have been a shot in the arm for smaller / indie vr dev.

i have waited 1000 years for a decent non-meta VR headset and I'm sure there are, like, a dozen or so people like me i ended up in the "post-reservation" queue or whatever it is, not the "getting one as soon as we can ship it out" queue

I bought the Oculus Dk1 Cv1 and Valve Index. I think I’m done with VR. I had fun but the games just aren’t there. Half Life Alyx is the singular AAA game and it can be fun to fire up Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer. But spending $1k just have that small part of gaming be better yeah, I’m good.

I’ve bought a lot of VR headsets over the years, but the main problem with them isn’t solved by hardware. It’s the lack of games that’s the issue. There’s nothing the Frame can do to make the current game selection any better than my Quest 3 can already do.

I’m in the queue. DF has mentioned it a few times but it seems like VR is in a small but weirdly stable market where the number of users, the number of games, and the overall budgets for those games seems to balance but not grow overall.

I think I've seen two-three people I follow who are Supreme VR Perverts (laudatory) that are interested, but little Normal Pervert (laudatory) interest. One of my colleagues at work is big into VR and he says he already has a Quest 3 and the specs of the Frame don't move him at the >$1k price point.

If it had been the case you could get the Machine and Frame for around the same price or a little more than either goes for alone now, I imagine it would be quite different. As it is, when faced with the choice a lot of folks will go for the Machine.

I really wanted to ditch my Quest 3 to shake off the Meta stink, and it would be great to pair with my Steam Machine, but the price is just too high right now. Probably going to pass on my reservation.

I'm connected to communities that are all about VR in some way and most of them are basically saying they already have similar specs at a lower cost from other companies. It just doesn't seem to be impressing people in that space and the price point is too high for a punt.

I believe the numbers were kept lower than the Steam machine but also VR is kinda a self-selecting community and this has less direct utility than a computer. Some people already have Quest 3s and are happy. I always sorta assume these things will sell out either way but I think it’s a harder sell.

I went to order 1 after your review and I’m on the waitlist so I guess they allocated their first run (although people might decide not to buy of course)

That's pretty much it if you have a quest 3 there's not a huge incentive as you'll get a better experience sure but a 1k better experience doubtful. For people new into vr there's not a killer app either valve should have had a title to launch with it

I do also wonder what this looks like in a year when Meta has fully switched over to wearables and passthrough shit, and the Quest being cheaper stops being really attractive or real.

I signed up because I like shiny gadgets and am irresponsible with money, and got wait-listed. Doesn’t feel like they made very many of these things.

I ordered one for a friend (I cannot justify spending a grand on a VR headset but he could) and I got an invite for one yesterday. I am still waiting for his invitiation to buy the high spec Steam Machine after 2 months.

I think the sales pitch of “this cube plays all the games you already own” is just a lot easier to understand compared to anything VR. Advertising VR has always been the biggest obstacle, Valve not immune to that I think.

THE PRICE. I remember when the pitch form VR evangelists at it's height was "We are just getting started! It's expensive now but eventually it will be like $500 and fit like a pair of sunglasses." To be fair some headsets did deliver on being cheaper and smaller but...it still doesn't feel "there"

My quest 3 is incredible hardware at an affordable price. Facebook sucks or whatever but the real issue is a stunning lack of worthwhile software. It has a handful of games I love that are all many years old now.

The Machine is a labor-reducing device, taking a bunch of hassle out of playing games while you sit on a couch; the Frame is basically the exact opposite, so the energy is all in places with younger, less tired people.

I managed to secure the 1tb Steam Frame but have been stuck in eternal waitlist for the Steam Machine 2tb. I wonder if the Frame had a bigger supply to demand ratio.

I get motion sickness on regular screens already and pitched myself sideways on the floor when I tried VR. So the addressable market has to be at least a bit lower.

I think the Steam Frame is obviously less broadly-appealing as a VR product and the waitlist is less novel the second time around, so observing less chatter about it seems pretty expected.

I love VR and I still play my psvr2 from time to time, but it just feels like at this point it’s another period for the tech where we have to wait for the headsets to get way cheaper and way smaller for it to generate a new wave of interest/money/software

Walking dead S&S, Into the Radius, Hitman WoA, Aces of Thunder, Bootstrap Island, Roboquest, Song in the Smoke, Behemoth etc. Not saying it's not great but there really are better games out there imo

The Quest 3 finally cornered a market for VR that wasn't tech enthusiasts in adolescents and teenagers, while the enthusiast market probably shrank. Unfortunately the frame won't capture that new market.

It's a better product and a better product for kids privacy wise but 250 to 600 a lot easier to drop on your kid as a Christmas gift than 1000 and the software for it started to shift that way.

Still broke from buying a Steam Machine. I'm interested in a Frame, but it'll be some time next year at the earliest. It's also the least compelling of Valve's hardware products right now, much as I love the idea of it and VR in general. I'm hoping a better battery solution comes out soon-ish.

i just want an AR super off-road that you can plop down on your coffee table (using a checkerboard for tracking or something) and multiple people with headsets can play at once. and a real time warhammer too. that kind of thing. when that’s easy i’ll get one or two of em

I was close... but the current staleness of the ecosystem just made it seem like a dumb move. I made a list of use cases and didn't get much further than Alyx and toying with Godot. Then I bought a big telephoto lens for photographing wildlife instead.

I barely use my Quest 3 anymore, but it was great at the time for fitness apps and Beat Saber when I had some foot problems preventing me from running. Still fire up a heavily modded Beat Saber from time to time but there's really nothing to justify buying another headset - especially at that price.

sure are if you hang out in the steam frame reddit. It seems like it was about 50/50 waitlist/reservations. Although considering some people's reservation has come up and others have not, I am unclear what the distinction is between the two.
