Seeing new people joining Bluesky today and seeing people elsewhere publicly stating their intentions to leave those places and come here. Welcome. Bluesky is not owned by a billionaire sucking up to Trump. And it's built on an open protocol so a billionaire can't just take it over.

This is a great extension that scans your Twitter Following List for anyone with Bluesky accounts, and it automatically follows all of them on Bluesky. Use This Extension to Find All Your X Followers on Bluesky lifehacker.com/tech/use-thi...

What is the most expensive for Musk, that we all leave X in an instant or that he runs losses year after year? That said, I dont like letting him keep the platform for his spreading of lies, misinformation and Trumpist propaganda.

I have also now created my first "starter pack" which recommends 150 people and three good feeds. I didn't pick the 150 people all that carefully, but just went through my list of people I follow and chose the maximum number I could from folks who I regularly interact with. go.bsky.app/QKm8yFP

Thanks for sharing Mike. I joined 💙🌌 when it first started. I knew Elon would screw up Twitter as we all knew it. Can’t stay there for my own mental health and the principle of the matter. Nice to meet you.

I joined Bluesky a while ago but haven't been very active until the lead up to this election. I deactivated my Twitter/X account in the early hours of the morning. I'm done with. Happy to be here.

Yeah me too, though the actual deletion process is gonna take a day or two (not particularly trusting anything will actually get deleted but worth a try). Hopefully more come over here; onlyTwitter got me through the last Trump presidency

The executive team and investors. But again, it's built with "the future company is a potential adversary" in mind. The whole point of building it on an open protocol is that the company shouldn't be able to fuck it up.

What makes you think that’s the case? Isn’t Threads in the same situation? Privately owned, built on an open protocol. We’ve all witnessed what’s happened the very day after the elections. A public, shameless blowjob to Trump. The fact it didn’t happen here gives hope. But that’s it. No guarantees.

Threads is not built on an open protocol. It's proprietary, but building in interoperability with ActivityPub, which is loosely enabled by some users. That's not this.

Yes. Because there is no one named Jack with any control or ownership here. If you mean Jack Dorsey he has been gone for quite some time.

Honestly wish Mastodon and Bluesky would figure out how to bridge the gap. I have a longer presence on Mastodon and I don't plan to leave either place any time soon.

I personally would prefer to leave the transphobia, dishonesty, and hatred of these 2 behind. I think a lot of people are not aware of how much of a jerk they both are and shouldn't be introduced to them

Really? I find starter packs and feeds pretty good at that. And in various feeds (especially Discover) they now have recommendations on people to follow and they tend to be pretty good.

I agree. I joined today and those starter packs & feeds are genius! Don't know how old you are or if you remember Google's disastrous attempt at a social media platform, but the failure was staggered "invite only" sign-ups and not being able to create community quickly. Most logged in once and left.

I should look through more starter packs. Because they weren't here when I joined, I've only focused on narrow ones (eg law profs). I'm still struggling with feeds - some (like Dog Pics) include a lot of crap I don't want (furries and comics). I forget to look at Discover - but I will now.

If you're new here and trying to "get started" I recommend checking out the #feeds link in your menu. There are ~60k different feeds available, most created by users. Or search for "starter packs" that have lists of recommended follows on all sorts of topics.

Also, if you want people on Mastodon to be able to see and respond to what you post here, follow @ap.brid.gy, and it will automatically mirror your Bluesky posts to Mastodon and other ActivityPub apps.

Oh yeah, one other point for newbies. "Block" here doesn't work like it does in other places. Block is what's known as the "nuclear block." It wipes out all interactions, so it kills nonsense *fast*. Do not be afraid to block. Use it early. Use it often. It will greatly improve your experience.
