Buy some headphones or AirPods. Stop using your speakerphone in public. Nobody wants to hear your inane, stupid conversations about absolutely nothing.

I was in an elevator with a person having a conversation with someone on speakerphone. I repeated everything the other person said. Finally, the person on the phone said, "I need to get off this call." Victory.

I was riding public transit to work several years ago. There was a woman on the phone with her bank. She was giving all of her personal details to the person on the other end - SS, bank account, and credit card numbers, DOB, etc. out loud. Crazy!

I can deal with the conversations I'm from a small town. Being nosy and listening to a stranger's life story on the fly is a popular hobby I can even deal with music I like hearing what other people are enjoying. It can be fun even if the tunes are crap. But the GAMES with the random noises 🤯🤯

I just join in the conversation. Seriously…. Try it. Someone once told me that it was “none of my business!” I told them it was everyone’s business in earshot of your private conversation. To which the person on the other end said “Call me back when your not surrounded by people”.

Had one of these on a bus I was on a year or so ago. When it became obvious it was not going to be a short phone call, I rather loudly asked the ether: "Anyone else seen Star Trek 4?" There was a pause, then a voice further up asked: "That the one where Spock took out the guy with the loud music?"

I don’t understand. I listened to a step-by-step of a caller’s basal cell carcinoma removal while in a long line at Walgreens, and it was fascinating. 😀

I was in a waiting area at the VA reading when a guy refused to take his call elsewhere when politely asked so I started reading aloud. He continued, as did I, and he told me to be thankful I didn't live in his neighborhood where such behavior would be punished violently. 😁

Well played. I absolutely hate this. Just put the damn phone to your ear. Or if you need to be 'hands free', get some buds. You can get Bluetooth buds for <$20. There is no excuse to be a dick and disrupt everyone else.

After longer exposures of people in a public place having conversations with someone else on speakerphone, a friend of mine's practice is to deliberately comment once they hang up: "Sorry your sister isn't feeling well," "Hope your son remembers to take the dog out like you asked," etc.

Yes. Years ago i was in line at my bank, and some young dude was cursing on his phone very loudly. I walked back to him and said you need to carry that conversation outside please cuz everybody can hear it and we are not enjoying it and it's rude. And he was surprised

Gen agree. BUT when a good nug of Grateful Dead is turned up in the car I may roll windows down & let it out into a neighborhood I truly think needs it. When the Mexican neighbors roll by blasting THEIR music I give them a thumbs up. I think they are doing the same thing. I think we're both right.

Certainly don't intend to cause you pain! Don't have a trunk mounted subwoofer or a car audio that vibrates house windows. Just me and my Mexican neighbors tryin to expand the consciousness of the racist A-hole living up the street with a little Mariachi or a 2/24/74 Darkstar. Trust me, he needs it.

please send money... we need to protect you from sane rational conversations about normal stuff... ( PS as a hermit... I rarely am in town... and few people call me... usually when they need my help.. you know normal stuff)

😆 I hear people out for walks across my yard & across the street, 50 yards away talking full-throated on their phones. I think its because they need me to know they believe they are important. 🥱

Wouldn’t it be amazing instead of shoving AI down our throats, that we had places to shop or sit and read in public, where no technology was permitted except for emergency phone calls? Sadly, the tech and phone dependent persons would consider not being able to annoy everyone else an emergency.

Polite amendment: Get wired headphones. Wireless headphones/AirPods emit a signal that can be hacked. Remember that VP Harris was mocked for using wired headphones until she said if you'd seen some things she's seen, you'd only use wired headphones, too.

The people who do this are always having pointless conversations. It’s also a trend here to play music over the speakerphone while cycling. It’s always lame music, too. Never anything cool or interesting. Just not worth sharing. It must just be the type of person they are.

There’s a bloke that rides his electric bike around our city with a ghetto blaster turned up full volume. Regardless of the music in relation to my own personal taste (it’s actually pretty good), this is rude, inconsiderate attention seeking behaviour that contributes to general noise pollution.

I share your pain. I've just a month ago come back from an 11 week traipse around my whole country - every state, both mainland territories. The number of cities where I needed 360⁰ vision because of these cyclo-dicks. I never got knocked down and in the back of an ambulance 🚑, but only just.

My god I hate when people do that. Especially in waiting rooms at Dr, fhey have volume full blast on a game or video. I almost want to look at them and say, " do you have any fucking decency? "

Somethings that need to be said Should be done behind closed doors Not for all & sundry to hear about the wild night of passion they had with half the street while sat on a bus ..I mean I was embarrassed for them 😳😉😁✌️

Ppl are old dumb and deaf and have no idea how to do the iPhones They don’t even know how to use it much less if you can hear it The younger ones are just dumb and oblivious

And especially out in the woods and on the greenways. We are there to escape that. Don't want to hear your preaching or music, either. FFS, you can buy earbuds at Walmart for < $10, Bubba.

To the people who have conversations thru their car infotainment systems — there is volume control! Look it up and turn it the f*ck down! I don’t want to hear you yapping from two blocks down the street.

Speakerphones? Pah! I live opposite the local high school. Don't get me started on cars with subwoofers at high volume in the parking lot at 7am.

That is one of my greatest annoyances... along with parents that give their toddlers their phones to watch some kids show on max volume at the Dr office. I dont know when this became ok. My other peeve is people talking on the phone when they are being served at a fastfood/coffee shop.

I assume they live in a narcissistic bubble with their needs first and are bewildered that there are other people with other views of the world

IKR. Sitting in a stall in the mensroom last week and the guy next to me says, "Hey how are you, how's your day been?". I said "Fine and you?" Then he whispered a BIT loud, "I'll call you back later". 😳😱

I can say from embarrassing experience that people do not know they are going deaf. There can be every imaginable and obvious indicator and still people will not comprehend their deafness. Mea culpa. I did not know other people could hear my phone conversations on high volume, because I could not.

Some folks are hard of hearing. I am but I also realize not everyone has the funds to buy hearing aides. This is like people getting upset because they are holding a conversation in another language. If they aren’t talking about you ignore them.

The speakerphone-in-public crowd treats the grocery store like their personal podcast studio. Headphones cost twenty bucks. Your call about nothing costs everyone else their sanity. Hold the phone to your ear or keep the conversation to yourself.

They can buy some headphones, it’s not that difficult. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Their fear of something does not need to be everyone else’s problem.

Honestly I don't get the rudeness. Then they turn to you and say "business", like ish you are airing your business for the world. It's like posting your relationship drama on socials and getting mad when people give you advice or take a side. "We're just going to work it out ourselves"... 👀

There is a direct correlation between the mindlessness of a person's conversation and the likelihood that they will have it on a speakerphone in public. Similarly, the people who talk through comedy shows are inevitably the dullest people in the audience. #STFU

Better yet, just fucking text when you’re out in public. I don’t even want to hear one side of your inane, stupid conversations (exceptions for emergencies of course).

Anyone recall the era of 'Push-to-Talk' by Nextel? It was the golden age of public disruption. The very early-2000s was when seeing someone take a call in public was still something of a showstopper.

This makes me crazy. It’s convenient to be able to wait at my car dealership for minor things but then there’s always some idiot sitting there on their speaker phone. While I’m on my soapbox how about the ones walking through stores yapping away. What do you all have to talk about?

I talk to myself when I walk the dog. Actually, I’m pointing out all the cool stuff on our route. I would never use a speaker in public for a phone call.

Thankfully living in Japan, this mostly doesn't apply, apart from the few, almost always non-Japanese people who do this.

And I’m tired of people talking on their phones with air pods in(that I don’t see) & wondering WTF are they talking to? Themselves? Me? Take our conversations outside or in your car. It’s ridiculous

People need to be careful. Headphones and or AirPods can limit your ability to hear the surrounding sounds. You become an easy target for theives, rapists and out of control cars. Think about that when you put them on. For your privacy don’t have your phone on speakerphone when in public places.

Just pull out your phone and repeat whatever that first person was saying on their public call - sort of like a five-year-old who constantly repeats what an adult says. Induce others to join.

There was a time, believe it or not, that when you brought a smart phone, an iPhone for example, you got headphones included in the price. They stopped this and introduced their outrageous price across headphones separately, but did you notice the phone didn’t get any cheaper!

I was in a small Thai restaurant where at the next table the four patrons decided to speakerphone a fifth party. They were all screaming to the phone, and all I could think was, “what is wrong with these people?”

Also nobody wants to hear your music, your TV shows or movies, your funny funny Tik Toks, your games, or anything else that makes noise on your damn phone.

OMG I was sitting in a busy oncology waiting room when some old guy decided to put a football game on speaker. SO inconsiderate. Almost as bad as the family on the greenway playing their weird, likely snake handling preacher. It is usually the older maga types. I'm 70 and don't want to hear it.

I totally understand not wanting to endure someone else's music, but I don't understand why anyone is bothered by a phone conversation. If the other person was physically there, having the conversation, would anyone ask one or both to shut up? In a public space? I don't understand the problem.

People crank up the volume on their speakerphones to compensate for the low fidelity of the tiny speakers. Typical conversations are 60- 65 dB, while conversations over speakerphones are up to 120 dB. Over 80 dB is considered a noise nuisance.

My auntie was partially deaf and wouldn't wear a hearing aid. Our conversations were always loud no matter where we were. The point is that a conversation between people doesn't prevent anyone from going about their own business. Pub noises are louder.

If they person is clearly annoying others as well, I believe the appropriate response is to get close and break into song. Preferably the Star Spangled Banner. LOUDLY. And ask others to join in.

What's worse are these knuckleheads who feel the need to ride the streets on their bicycles pulling a wagon behind them with an entire sound system so they can blast their music (usually bad 70s rock) as they weave through public parks, etc. No one wants to hear that shit. Maybe it's a PNW thing?

I was in a waiting room last week, and a man had a his speaker on at full blast for about 5 minutes. A young girl told him to turn it off because it gave her a headache. He apologized. A room full adults, and it took a literal child to put him in his place. LOL

We still have to endure a loud one way conversation. I always wonder is it someone on headphones or someone with mental health issues talking to themselves. 🥴

I don't understand how we got here. Headphones are cheap. I still use wired earbuds from time to time. Hell, I will donate them if they're on me to some asshole listening to their goddamn speaker in public. In 2026.

With headphones the person is still going to talk to whomever they are on the phone with. Is this really just about hearing the person on bad, loud speakers?

I used to cover the register in our convenient store. We had what I called "zombie shoppers". <to phone>: "OK, there's chicken noodle, chicken dumpling, um, lentil, tomato-spinach-no, no ham in the lentil-Italian wedding, um, vegetable, beef noodle..."

Greeting card were the worst: "OK, this one has a white cat on the front and it says, 'So...it's your birthday...' then inside, it has a cake and it says 'I hope it's purrrrrfect!" like a cat purr, get it? This one has two old ladies and it says..." repeat for 45+ cards.
