NPR is part of the reason why utter morons like Trump, Hegseth, and RFJ Jr. are in power, because the nonsense they peddle in has been normalized by legacy media outlets exactly like what you're seeing above.

So is he also into the theory of "humours" in the body and how the celestial bodies affect them? Are all current treatments going to be replaced by leeches and cupping? Are all diseases now caused by witches putting the evil eye on people? WHY IS A MEDIEVAL MONK RUNNING OUR HEALTH SYSTEM?

I do wish you'd gone a little stronger with the century-and-a-half of scientific study that has supported the germ theory over the miasma theory. The GOP trying to make America antebellum again is really concerning.

I was told that a hypothesis is an idea that hasn't been tested or proven, a theory is something that has evidence in its favor but can't be directly proven, and a law is something that has been directly proven through evidence.

NPR, WTF??? Seriously. W.T.A.F?????? I rely on you for real news...not this Putin-style propaganda bullshit. Have some self-respect and do the right thing. They are going to cut your funding no matter what. Whatever they are dangling, don't trust this grifter regime. FFS.

This is why I have trouble feeling sorry for them when I hear them pleading for donations from listeners because their federal funding is being slashed (even though I don't want their funding to be slashed). They helped normalize and prop up the exact people who are now destroying them.

You need to stop two sidesing here. It's not editorialising or opinionating to call out nonsense. What next? Embracing doubts around the 'widely accepted heliocentric hypothesis' or embracing phlogisten or denying 2+2=4 in favour of 2+2=5?

The only reason I even know about "miasma" "theory" is from building characters to perform at medieval and renaissance faires... ...we are actively trying to return to the dark ages. This is madness.

It's not "Widely accepted" guys. Stop pulling punches. There's no germ theory debate. The headline you're looking for is "RFK Jr believes in complete nonsense abandoned centuries ago in place of the core premise of modern medicine."

Has been for decades now. He publicized Andrew Wakefield's thimerosal quackery in _Rolling Stone_, got a taste of fame among American woo believers, and he's just as addicted to it now as he was to heroin.

Germs are “widely accepted” as the cause of disease. What’s next, we’re going to “both sides” whether it’s good to jump into hot lava? “It’s widely accepted that hot lava is bad for you.”

In all fairness, plague doctors were using the best information and tools at hand to go into scary, plague filled places to try and help sick people. That was the scary looking PPE of their day. Which is to say, they were not the problem during the plague.

It didn't die of old age. It was disproven. But the article shows RFK Jr isn't really embracing that, he's just embracing pseudo-science over science, and calling it "gold standard".

Excellent book about the London Cholera epidemic of the 1800s and the beginnings of epidemiology. People continued to believe in the miasma theory even after it was debunked.

This reads like it was written to adhere to the Fairness Doctrine It's not the author's job to take a side, but to present all sides as they represent themselves. This lets the reader make informed decisions. Here, it's pretty clear that it's credentialed Dr's, vs think tanks

peddling miasma theory in the name of the fairness doctrine is fucking evil. it is completely and 100% untrue. there is no debate to be had, miasma theory is wrong and should not be treated as an opinion to hold

Unfortunately for everyone, it appears to be an opinion held at the highest levels of us government. I disagree with framing this article as "peddling miasma theory." This article is highlighting that people in charge are think-tank purchased idiots.

It's really only the last paragraph and the summary that are at all objectionable. The rest of the piece is just good sober reporting, not stooping to name calling but not pulling its punches (much). But that last paragraph shoulda been, "Gregg, who has never touched a microscope, whined that..."

I just re-read the article for a fourth time following your comment. The only lie I can find is in the both-sidsing quote from a think tank, which comes after the article says germ theory replaces miasma theory, and quotes from experts calling miasma theory dangerous

Don’t you fucking know the difference between a “scientific theory” and a “my second cousin has a theory that tornadoes are attracted to trailer parks” kind of theory?

I i really hate the worst science journalists, some of whom have enjoyed tremendous career success, but I simply don't think that's true. There are people who love science and wind up writing about it. If I weren't doing it, I might be writing about it.

I don't care about the grammatical error; I only left it instead of fixing it to be accurate and to mock them. I care that they place germ theory, in scare quotes, on an equal footing with miasma as a "widely accepted theory"; it's as universally agreed upon and as thoroughly proven as it can be.

Meanwhile, miasmas have been known to be bullshit for like a century and a half. Maybe the article is better; I don't bother to read it and I didn't post about it. The social media post is evidence of a broken brain or of malignant intent, by someone who simply should not be doing that job.

But it doesn't put it on equal footing. Like, even slightly. The entire article is about how RFK Jr believes in miasma theory, but doesn't understand miasma theory, that even if his incorrect definition *was* miasma theory it would still be wrong. It's breaking down the multiple layers of wrong.

You actually used the word outdated? How MSM of you. I don't say that politely. Miasma "theory" is merely outdated? Suppose Gen. Stephen Whiting (Space Force) orders his team to reconsider that elegant Aristotelian model of the solar system. Would you contend his approach is merely outdated?

It isn’t just outdated. The miasma theory was advanced by Hippocrates in the 4th century BCE. It has been discredited by scientists and physicians since the late 1800s, replaced by the germ theory of disease. Do better NPR and don’t play both sides.

Why are you reporting this as if his view has credence? It’s witchcraft and superstitious nonsense. This is not reportage. You are pandering to a fascist regime, whether out of fear or for favour. But you are part of the problem now &, come the revolution, we’ll remember.

The Victorians all thought disease was caused by the vapours, when in reality it was poverty, lack of sanitation, living in close quarters, and lack of medical care. So I guess it tracks.

Curious why you think it's good reporting to give someone from a think tank the same weight as a viral disease specialist? Honestly, you give MORE weight to Greg's quote since it's what closes out the piece. This is dangerous bothsidesism, and you know it. This needs to be retracted immediately.

It's not "outdated"; at this point, it is clearly pseudoscience junk that has not been taken seriously in the medical world in over a century. Do not legitimize, even a little bit, the dangerous and incorrect junk that RFK Jr is peddling.

NPR, "outdated miasma theory"... really? What's next, the "outdated earth-centric theory" of the universe? Is the sky really blue? Is water really wet? GIVE ME A BREAK! Call it like it is: RFK Jr. is delusional and unfit for any public office. Period.

But in the article it notes that others have said that RFK jr. takes that a step further and considered medication and vaccines to treat diseases as modern day miasma. So basically he thinks you get ADHD from taking medicine to treat it. And it can only be cured by a "healthy" diet and hard work.

It is not a theory. Don't treat it like a scientific theory. Say "he believes in miasma, something that no sane and science-literate person has believed in for centuries", or so. He is completely cookoo, bonkers. Don't normalize this kind of madness.

when this maniac dies, the heroic folk all over the world who have spent their blood, sweat, effort and decades of their lives thanklessly saving vulnerable people among dire conditions will be fighting the impulse to cheer. FIIK why statistically zero of the reporting on RFK Jr reflects this.
