The U.S. Mint releases video showing the manufacturing process for $1 coins featuring President Trump, issued to mark the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026. Critics have raised questions about the design's legality.

For paper money, 31 U.S.C. §5114(b) says: “Only the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency and securities.” But US law treats coins separately from “currency”. 31 U.S.C. §5103 says: “United States coins AND currency … are legal tender”/1

31 U.S.C. §5112(aa)(1) says: “No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the REVERSE of any coin under subsections (x), (y), and (z).” 2/

That word “reverse” is the loophole. Trump is on the obverse — the front/heads side. Trump on reverse: prohibited. Trump on obverse: apparently permitted by the literal wording. Totally bizarre but seemingly permissible loophole.

lol you unprofessional cowards, you lickspittle stenographers, you absolute units of incompetence It’s plainly illegal and that is beyond question. Quit your jobs and do something that you are capable of. It’s certainly not journalism.

Imagine calling yourself a journalist and simply ignoring the law as it is written, and pretending that there are "critics" vs people saying "it's against the law, you stupid illiterate fucks"

The law says it; critics cite the law. The law doesn’t “appear” to say it’s illegal, it says it’s illegal. The commemorative clause changes nothing about the core law. Face it: he’s a fascistic narcissist and you all are eager, compliant scribes. #ImpeachTrump #ImpeachBessent #NoFascistUSA

As far as I understand its not illegal for coins to have a living person on them. Bills are different. Looks like he just can't call it a presidential $1 coin. Congress has said no for living persons on them. Might have misunderstood though.☝️

The horrific thing about this... Even if Dems are elected tomorrow and have the ability to say "these coins are no longer valid as US currency", they can't. Because it would be taking money away from those who bought them. The best they could do is say go to a bank and get a Washington dollar to..

...replace the Trump dollar. But those people who bought them would lose money (unless it becomes a collectors item) as they are paying over $60 for 25 coins. The Dems won't take it out as valid money but will take it out of circulation.

The only questions being raised are whether you will ever recover the self-respect & trust that you’re choosing to piss up the wall in this truly cringeworthy display of subservience to King Trump.

"Man shoots wife; critics have raised questions about the act's legality." Silly, isn't it? "Critics have raised questions" is the most unhelpful wording you could choose, and you only use it for certain groups of people. Is it illegal or not?

It’s illegal and you are helping them normalize getting away with breaking the law. If this was someone stealing a sandwich you wouldn’t be like “people are questioning the legality of it” you’d be asking why the police didn’t arrest them.

How desperately compromised is your management and editing team that you cannot state clearly that this is illegal. There is no controversy. There is no "some people say" It's law. Living people can't be put on currency. Why the FUCK ARE YOU BOTH-SIDES-ING THIS!?

Still interestingly, go to the US Mint website and type “January 6” in the search bar. They’re still selling the all-bronze coin (as opposed to Trump’s cheaper plated coin) that thanks the officers for fighting the Jan 6 rioters.

What the fuck is this headline? Critics are questioning the legality? No it's just illegal!!! There's a law that says that you can't put living people on money. The king is striking coins in his own image. The fucking headline. Jesus wept, can any of you do your jobs?

It's good that they are documenting their constitution trashing crimes along with their actions to prop up a failing, flailing, dying old mobbed-up dictator wannabe. It makes it much easier to prosecute them all when accountability time rolls around. 🫤

I can't say with 100% certainty that his rancid face bumped off Sacagawea & Susan B. Anthony, but you can be sure he's aware of this & will be gloating over it in posts soon enough. I *think* his bogus visage is on the only dollar coin being minted. And Illegally. Any numismatists out there?

There aren't any "questions" about it. It's illegal. Clearly and explicitly. 31 U.S.C. §5114(b). You can't "both-sides" this, and by doing so, you're defending the regime and propping up its lies.

"The law does not appear to allow living persons to appear on US money" We there seems to be 2 simple solutions to this issues: 1) recall coins 2)... you guessed already, don't make me say it

This is a "no question" situation. Call a spade a spade and illegal is illegal. The reason he's still here to ruin things is because of y'all media/news outlets and coward politicians not treating him like the criminal he is.

This is illegal. The issue is how to legally challenge it. Here is the answer. bsky.app/profile/lawy...

Here’s how to legally stop Trump’s deranged attempts to put his face on currency, especially since standing is the biggest challenge: The Trump administration is planning to mint a $1 circulating coin bearing the president’s image. That coin is flatly illegal. 1/x

Outside of the fact that this should be illegal (Yet it isn't thank everyone in congress for that) Get this... It isn't even real gold most of it is copper 6% Zinc 3.5% manganese and 2% Nickel the gold is just painted on it it isn't even real Talk about an embarrassment

No, "critics" have not "raised questions." It is in plain English in 31 US Code SEc. 5114(b): "Only the portrait of a deceased individual may appear on United States currency..." Stop pretending there's any doubt.

Dear Reuters - critics? What is the law? Please state the facts. 1866 Thayer Amendment: Congress passed a law stating that no portrait or likeness of a living person can be placed on U.S. bonds, securities, notes or postal currency. It should not be hard to do accurate journalistic headlines.

"No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President."

Critics aren't saying anything. The law is plain english. This isn't unbiased reporting. You're picking the side of the nazi pedophiles.

Who gives a fuck what critics say - we have the law. What does the law say? I guess by critics you mean people who can read very clearly written laws but for some reason you have to frame them as haters or something and not just people who can read plain English

You can say it violates the law. It's right there in black and white that it violates the law. You don't need critics or a law degree or any other kind of expertise. I know you were taught to write for a 6th or 8th grade level, and that's sufficient here to read the law that says it's illegal.
