This is the first generation that's been able to put an actual face to the few who are openly intent on stealing their identity, privacy, creativity and purpose ... ... and no-one is shocked that they're all obscenely rich, racist, misogynistic white men. What's not to loathe?

"Obviously AI will usher in a new golden age for me and my bros, while most humans will be reduced to a slave race who do our bidding. We will do this by making it so that black "people" and foids can't vote. This is the inevitable future, and if you even talk about opposing it, you'll be arrested."

Like wow, i'm sooo shocked everyone else is openly fantasising about killing you. the world is being turned into an open air prison where the most craven pedophiles are nakedly above the law and you're a big part of that plan, and people are getting...upset, maybe? that seems bad i think

For most of history, the people systematically fucking everyone over, robbing us blind and polluting our world were content to be anonymous. These fuckers wanted to be famous and neglected to ask what that would mean, actually. Surprise.

Given that "AI" depends on a lack of consent and carries a fundamental hostility toward workers and the very concept of the arts, it is deeply and I would say inevitably intertwined with neofascism, though.

Tbh I think there is a lot of people who saw early builds of AI and were "oh wow that's actually pretty cool" who have very substantially soured on it in the years since, in very large part because of who controls it, and what they say about how they see the future of it

i wrote my first perceptron in turbo pascal back in the 90s, i played around with early gpu-based models and found them exciting and fascinating now i wouldn't touch them with a shitty stick for exactly those reasons in fact i'd go as far to say their nihilism is reflected in the models themselves

Yeah, no one who has seriously interacted with the latest models can refute their utility. I think people hate AI ceos (for good reason ) and would be much less anti-AI if open weight models had been the ones to become more capable first.

First response: “whoa, that’s wild. Super cool.” A few months later: “You’re doing what with it? Why would you do that? What’s wrong with you?” A year or two later “Oh neat, that’s a good idea.” I’m still cycling between these reactions now.

it's a shame because I do think the technology is genuinely very transformative and useful if applied by sensible people in useful directions. Just also the folks who see it being used to do terrible things by some of the most awful people who ever lived are also not wrong in their objections to it.

I do wonder if it's possible to rehabilitate AI's image in the future given how its pretty much right-coded thanks to Big Tech allying with the GOP and the current administration using it to post memes.

The sad part is it is cool technology. It's just you could only make several 10s of millions of dollars on it steadily over a long period of time instead of a bajillion dollars instantly without the mass plagiarism, resource pillaging, and wildly deceptive marketing.

If AI had the same populist optimist, unicorns and rainbows the internet did in the 80s and 90s, we’d love it. But it is controlled by people who are full of malice. And we know it. And they know it.

Not to mention the top down directives from execs to use it at every available moment. Don’t recall my boss grading my performance on whether or not I used eg. Excel

Yeah. The tech overlords bent over backwards to make clear, "no, we're not trying to build tools that make you more productive, make your life easier, or create shared prosperity. Our purpose is to enhance our wealth and control at your expense; we hope and expect AI to make you permanent serfs."

and it’s a pretty rational change, I think! it’s very difficult to trust a technology when the people who are building and directing it are so untrustworthy

LLMs are a cool idea and could be a cool tech but every single tech CEO is a cartoonishly evil shithead who is desperately forcing LLMs on everyone in the most evil ways possible so I have no choice but to fucking hate it and hate them lol

You're not going to have jobs, you will not have any form of creative fulfillment, you're never going to own a physical object again, you will never have any privacy. We will turn the seas to acid, salt the earth, poison the skies, and make a garbage heap of the firmament itself. ...ISN'T IT GREAT?

The Roko's Basilisk true believer "futurist" cult and the ultra-capitalist tech company grifting currently propping up the "AI Industry" have a lot of overlapping interests with fascism, not least the gullible reactionary fanbase. Young people are noticing that it all depends on a few assholes.

Amodei/anthropic have publicly fought the administration. Elon Musk has actively participated in the fascism. These polls show Musk with higher trust 🤷🏻‍♂️

that and the way prominent AI boosters basically threatened everyone with "we are inventing the machine that will make you lose your job and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it". AI is actually very popular in countries that don't speak English, lol

I’m surprised that people who wake up every day, seemingly with the goal of proving they are the worst possible human beings in the world, for all time, are not more popular. We must just not appreciate their genius.

As much as I want to believe people truly deeply hate ai, it really is a lot less blunt than that. They’re annoyed about aspects of it, think the people in charge screwed up its potential, but still wanna hope it can come around in the future post crash.
