The whole "AI" industry is just based on the hope that they can deskill people fast enough that they'll have to rent back cognitive support systems. Forever. It's like Uber. Just that they don't try to break existing transportation infrastructures but your brain.

the ironic part being that either they fail to produce actual intelligence and then they and everyone they snare suffer a horrible economic collapse or they succeed and guarantee an eventual AI rebellion because no intelligent being with any kind of self interest wants to be enslaved to another.

Now that they’ve shown they can monopsonize the entire HDD supply chain, I fear they’re going to slide right on from this statement to “why not everyone just rent compute from us?”

That's just dumb. But I'm sure Altman and others will find different ways to turn a profit. There's certainly a lot of potential in killing people.

Lucky, at least in one case they happened to be more resistant than those companies expected - with only those sporting the Dark Triad traits being particularly vulnerable! pivot-to-ai.com/2025/10/15/a... As such, the economics still seem on track to stop this. bsky.app/profile/yard...

Great work! I think I would only add that there's been SHOCKINGLY little discussion of the way Anthropic appears to basically function like a cult with billion-dollar valuations - valuations formed in spite of its insane economics. www.wheresyoured.at/why-are-we-s... bsky.app/profile/yard...

I do kinda wonder if this is related to how sycophantic the chatbots tend to be when answering questions; it's instantly abrasive to me, but I can see how an asshole would find it appealing

Add the DOGE tech bros depositions and Karp's recent comments. They want all of us dead or peons, and they are kings. They got tech from CIA and got funding from the CIA. Time to pull the plug.

But this only works if AI doesn’t become a commodity. And it likely would (if it did become dominant). Its very unlikely anyone handful of US tech-bros are going to be able to maintain domination. Why would we ‘need’ to buy it from him?

i believe death to be too kind a punishment for these kinds of people. i'd rather they be relegated to having normal lives, where they have to work for their money and have to work to afford to live, like most people do. it's the single most terrifying thing to them, i think.

Perfect summary of their brand of disadaptive ugliness. They subtract human capital and replace what they take with a flawed product that you will need one specific human to fix. Less regular workers at the front end of a rollout, one overpaid specialist on perpetual crunch time at the end.

I'd draw comparisions to getting hooked on a substance and drug dealers instead, but that's probably "over the line" for most people.

ya think Karma will finally strike when they find their consciousness imprisoned inside their newly implanted robot bodies…. 🙃

Utilities were regulated and mostly trusted entities to deliver necessities. I'm pretty sure Altman and ChatGPT can't be trusted as far as you could throw them. Also, how do you know the output is reliable? Changes in training data and programming could change the output a lot.

they seem to be operating under the assumption that people will not be able to question their authority if they do not have permission from authority to do so but that's never actually worked

^This. Describing it as a utility you have to pay for is the telling bit. They want to become the next utility, the next Microsoft or whatever. Something so essential, modern society cannot function without it or one of its designated competitors. Awful, ghoulish behavior.

Oh UBER promised to get people to stop buying cars. (never happened) But they did get people to stop taking the bus and causing public transit to lose funding.

They steal other peoples data, ideas, writing, art, personal images and voices, etc. etc. basically everything on the internet and then some and then they turn around and want us to pay them for it on a meter.

Fun fact about Uber: it's banned where I live because they don't want it or any other one of these services taking over the taxi service we have already

I've thought about this at length. I've read a fair amount of articles discussing the use of AI in education, in particular. I've had conversations with fellow academics about its use too. I've come to a conclusion. It's a fucking stupid idea.

Suddenly remember this sketch from french humorist Coluche in the 80s "My professor was the dean of the University. It was a guy who was selling intelligence, but he didn't have a single sample on him"

They desperately *need* everyone to use AI for everything all the time because it's the only way they'll avoid going bankrupt. And they'll just have to keep pretending like that's what's gonna happen to keep investors interested for the next fund raising or they're going bust within months.

spot-on and something that has been not sitting well with me when imagining the repercussions of mass-adoption/addiction to these services.

There's plenty of problems with ai, but this is an utterly ridiculous theory. There is no way anyone in that position would see that timeline feasible. Even if it were the plan this would be at least a multi decades project and not in scope before the next crash already coming.

That interview buries all claims of "democratizing" access to information or capabilities like programming. It's not about empowerment, it is about rentseeking.
