Hi, I’ve been a software developer for 30 years, including in very large IT projects. Everything about “DOGE” and a bunch of Hitlerjugend walking into a data center and optimizing a code base and data grown over 70 years in a few days is complete bullshit on its nose. Sincerely, Thomas

I’m not as experienced as an IT professional but I can confirm they have not optimized anything in any meaningful way. Also, “move fast and break things” doesn’t work for government systems, but that’s Musk’s philosophy

You can do iterative development without breaking services though. Yeah it’s slower. There’s a lot of change management architecture needed to do it smoothly. Musk takes it literally though. He’s literally causing service outages. That’s totally avoidable. Well assuming those are accidental.

explain further, please...what we're hearing does sound like a bad made for tv plot, but are you saying that what they've been reportedly doing isn't possible?

To meaningfully add, remove or just reorganize code in a complex very old legacy IT system (like government payments stuff) takes large teams of dozens or even hundreds of people and years of dedicated work. The programming is just a tiny part. The real work is simulating, testing and verifying.

Absolutely At best they've added malware. They've possibly added some AI code. There's no way they've added quality code to legacy systems that they've only just been given access to. It reeks of people sharing a keyboard in a bad movie.

Ive been in my current job for nearly five years, in my current team for a couple (before that, I taught software engineering). Just getting my head around a few key tables in the thousands in the database took more than that.

So, the likelihood that these deviants have not only gotten the data but also analyzed it to uncover this alleged fraud is 0%, right? Like HOW?

Probably from the close-the-barn-door-after-the-horse-has-run-out department, but it should be standard practice for every government agency to have a "bug out" button that burns the code books and smashes the crypto machines, so that an invader gets nothing.

I regularly see industry "professionals" saying Elmo is really clever, and then citing the most moronic, entry level work possible. He's got a predictable managerial style that plays to the "not invented here" crowd, and a million sycophants desperate to blow smoke on LinkedIn and tech journals.

30 year software developer here. They are in there stealing data and breaking security. To get a load of kids who've been coding for a few years to "optimise" massive databases and code bases is fucking preposterous. He's using kids as they won't understand the magnitude of what herr musk wants

Kinda crazy that most of the US doesn't have a whiff of a clue how dangerous these happenings are. If we couldn't convince ourselves Covid was real, do you think anybody is going to care about our data being illegally accessed?

I know practically nothing about tech and I am shaking whenever I read about something else that these 🤡s are accessing. I honestly don't see how they can be stopped given all the current variables. One would never think the government would actually just hand them access. It's so demoralizing.

Invest in personal information security. I picked up Malwarebytes Ultimate for the identity protection, credit monitoring, and deep web scanning (not sponsored)

I imagine trying to warn people will be met with a lot of "Well that Elon has made a whole lot of money and sent people to mars so I think he knows what he's doing! I would rather a smart man like that run technology for the government than people who have never been to mars before".

Network Admin here and have seen what one person can do with the right knowledge and tools to an entire system especially creating a way in when you are no longer on site. This is really scary for our country.

I think they are getting all the data ie. everyone’s personal info to merge it with voter data to see who they can submit votes for - people who don’t vote and other election cheating things.

Like these six script kiddie wizards with mostly Python, JavaScript (and doubtfully C++) skills are now COBOL experts?!? Funny. They just run in, tap into the DB servers, download the whole shizzle and run. No way they're implementing anything in such a brief time. THIS IS JUST A ROBBERY.

Yes, they probably are looking how that DB2 runs. Although I assume that normal SQL queries should work on COBOL. Only code structure and some syntax differ in these queries. I should ask a friend of mine he's the COBOL expert in the team. I only roughly know some basics of it.

I just replied to another comment on here. It's a big data steal. Imagine what you can do with that training LLM of the sensible data of the whole US population including profile pictures (see your drivers licence). What a complete surveillance tool you would have. 1/2

They don’t care about the code. They are stealing the data. Plenty of tools around to move the data to queriable structures and then it’s essentially open. Data is probably in Moscow already /s

100% agreed. Three days for a code review itself is absurd, let alone reengineering, rewriting, and redeploying code. Now, if you were just dropping a script into a code base -- say, a data capture/transfer... ...let's just say that's far more plausible.

Hi Thomas, This whole thing is orchestrated to get people to freeze in response. They would like to keep your tax money for as long as possible. They are running a float and the interest is what they are interested in here. Ignore them and file for your refund. It’s smoke and mirrors. Love, Kelly

Worked in most areas of IT from small business to Fortune 500 companies for 20 years and yeah, this is all a giant fuckin clown show. You got an crazy billionaire buying an election and then gutting the government so he can give himself and his friends a tax break. We all pay that tax. Despicable.

THANK YOU. Information Governance person here who works closely with InfoSec and Privacy, and has experience with audits, financial forensics, and legal discovery. Complete and utter bullshit 😠

Over 30 years here as well. I've been saying this—at the very worst I think they are screwing around with database entries for payment scheduling and permissions, which is quite terrifying, but I highly doubt they are putting in backdoors, and they're certainly not optimizing COBOL lmao

I suppose if they changed the permissions on the databases, they could do brute force database updates with SPUFI, and not even mess with the COBOL programs. (Of course, unless the databases and their dependencies are very simple, this is fraught with the potential for errors.)

You can't just "optimize" a code base you know absolutely nothing about. That would take time. At least the time of learning the code itself and finding out what it does to even begin to know what to change. One of the many red flags giving away obvious lies.

Head of Engineering for a MarTech company here. Total and unbridled bullshit. The trillions of lines of government source code are so old they’re having trouble finding engineers for support & maintenance. A few people in the world might know how to optimize 70 yo code, but not 22 yo tech bros.

SW Architect. State, HOR, global apps This is a hack. They created HUGE regression, testing, integrity & validation issues+security holes the size of Edolf's ego You can't just kick them out. What changes did they make? Will payments be accurate? Is there malware? This'll be millions to fix

If we survive, I anticipate hearing about tech heroes who sweated ways to mitigate damage. Thanks for articulating the heart attack I’m having beyond the constitutional crisis heart attack. It’s something else seeing him undo all the hard work all those teams put in to securing our data. Fuuuuuck

Same, 100%. I worked on US Gov systems (not treasury) for several years and making any beneficial changes in prod isn't happening in that time frame. If they are just commenting out the audit logs and stealing the data, I could see that.

This could be a possibility. For now, my guess is, they're just stealing the data. I can assume that a later part of this plan is to train AI on that. Imagine what you could do with that. It got all your info including a profile picture of you. You could build a surveillance society never seen. 1/2

Personally I don’t know exactly that gov contractors or gov employees have need to know scope on access to raw data. So $200+ million and “potential” election fraud is the price to get to plug into all departments to attain one of the largest training sets in the world.

And correct me if I’m wrong, but the systems are decades behind. I worked in acquisitions for BOR in 2010 and it was green screen. The update that year was 2007 because it had to be compatible with multiple systems. This shit crashed imo. They stole data and ran & these suckers believed it.

I’ve been wondering all week what “modernization” they could be doing to any of these systems in such a short time. Add mechanisms to bypass usual security channels and allow outsider access to easily pause & restart payments? Rollup data to send outside the dept?

I worked at a place once where we had to raise issues like "give this admin temporary access to a specific system" as part of our process-change morning meetings. That was at a bank. Got a background check and drug test before they gave me the badge I needed to get to my desk.

I hope you’re right. My guess is they download the data, then sell the systems to the Chinese:Russians to hack. Or worse, they kidnap a thousand people who know how to program this, tell them they’ve got their spouse and kids as hostages, and get them to end Social Security payments for millions.

Am I the only one who thinks they'll use this info for targeting political opponents, disappearing dissidents, and pogroms against vulnerable communities? Consider how radio stations were used in Rwanda to organize attacks, now consider they're all on X/Telegram and would have our addresses...

They can do many nasty things for sure. Just the simple fact of hacking a system by entering a building and demanding root access is kinda unbelievable. How to call that? Social engineering? No because it is done quite openly. Let's call it a malevolent political engineering, it's a coup.

@Thomas, am with you. I think they are hoovering up code, data and contacts for external analysis at a later date. Its like malicious hackers and ransom ware gangs were invited in to govermental systems. Cant imagine how much this will cost to fix and clean up.

Changing permissions, deleting some files is enough. But you should not underestimate Musk as this is planned since at least Novembre. This task force did not come empy-handed.

I haven't worked on 70-year-old code, but I've worked on 30-year-old code and, as you say, it's not something where you just pop in and start changing things, especially since the documentation is usually trash by then.

this was more of a social engineering thing, where the people in charge of the network were co-opted, leading to the breach in control. Hacking in won't help and will get you in big trouble

You say the idea of a bunch of zit-faced punks dancing into various departments to "fix their legacy IT" is ridiculous? I ask you, sir: Do you know of any college that still teaches COBOL? ... I can also code FORTRAN, thank you.

Cobols easy. They shouldn’t have access to code. You just don’t let any one person with or without clearance the ability to change code without review and testing. They could be sending all our money into crypto. This is beyond belief!!!!

Yeah, I bet you're super good at them all, too. Go learn COBOL in a workweek and try to get hired to update a COBOL system...please report back with results.

these kids are at the code level. You never do that when reviewing processes. The efficiency of code is mute. old code ran on computers less powerful than my iPhone so it was always written more efficiently this isn’t about code effiency

As a database developer who works routinely with 3-5 years of less complex data than this, I second this. I have a considerable amount of experience and I would not touch that without significant training on the system. It’s so old I am quite sure it has weird rules from the 1970s.

.. um, but #legacycodes are pretty easy to learn if u r a good at coding.. albeit super long-winded n prob not as heavily commented, my pov as others hv suggested.. it’s not abt the codes/system, it’s abt the #data

I had to deal with this in the 90s working on avoiding Y2K. It was hard then and there is less community knowledge now. There are rules you cannot predict based on things I can only barely remember.

40+ years experience here. I theorize they aren't looking to touch any code. They are sucking down the data to train AI models to replace federal workers, i.e. bypass current systems. Thoughts?

I doubt it. The data they have is worth quite a sum of money. Also, I suspect it's more taking a cut of payments under the guise of "ensuring it's a good payment and not woke or dei" or whatever noise. That's also worth a large sum of money. That and since they've compromised the systems, ...

I'm sure actors from hostile nations are actively trying to exploit the situation. The bottom line is there's no efficiency gains, and this whole fiasco will cost the government billions when they have to rip out all hardware, software and replace it.

25+ here - I wouldn't be surprised at a bit of both, but that's all just conjecture. If we're losing visibility into the audit trail (and I'm assuming we are), I imagine an Office Space-like siphoning wouldn't be out of the question. It'd fit pretty nicely into the troll/meme/pop culture motif

That's exactly what they are doing. Training AI models with our census, banking, tax, health & veterans records right now as we sit here typing this. This data set is the BEST data set in the history of the world. Think about it.

Software dev for only 15 years here. I understood part of the plan was to cut USAID funding directly through the payment system. So indeed it looks like they're messing with the code. The points about pulling data to train AI is likely also true...and a privacy violation.

I worked with some legacy systems. So hard not to break things, usually due to low or poor test coverage. Scary that it’s a bunch of 19-24 year-olds who probably haven’t worked on legacy systems before. All startup guys - green field coders

Also yeah few days. We did an OS/platform updates, security patch and code optimization for a very large retailer, huge but nowhere near government agency size, it took a group of 15 of us over 2 YEARS to complete the project. It took over a month just to migrate from zendesk to Salesforce securely

Cybersecurity programmer for 22 years here. The scary thing with the kids is. Someone is GOING to have to audit all the code line by line. You know goddamn well they have put in backdoors which they could sell to China, Russia, Iran, hell ANYWHERE for literally 10s of billions of dollars

Former Wii hacker/coder 16 yrs ago. As "kids," I was in my mid 20s, your darn right there will be a backdoor. Used to "do it" to treyarch on Black Ops, MW. It's the maturity factor that is the issue. The bragging. A "code" can get leaked very quickly. Happened on Wii. It'll happen here.

It’s a lie, of course- a cover story to disguise the fact that they’re exfiltrating data that they attend to abuse & that they’re going to force legitimize cryptocurrency by putting federal databases on Blockchain.

Only 30 years? 😉 It takes more than a few days to figure out which modules go with which systems. It’s not always clear cut, especially with old code. They didn’t take time to understand, they just started writing code. That never works.

Yep. I just retired from a 40+ career in IT, starting with COBOL and FORTAN. In my experience, it took as long as 3 months just to perform a first pass review of large-scale legacy corporate applications. Those must be tiny compared to this. They weren’t optimizing shit. They were hunting.

This was planned since at least early November. They had time to prepare. As Musk did plan the destruction of USAID in a few days. It will completely be gone by the end of the WE. You cannot do that without early planning. People mocked Musk staying at mar al ago... He was planning all this.

You can plan all you want, but until you get your hands on the application, work with the users, and bring up the actual code on your computer, which only happened the other day, the only thing you are planning is office space and division of labor. The 3 month count only starts after that.

You mean these LLMs that spit out bad code full of imaginary libraries, imaginary functions, often missing the point of the prompt that is only maybe useful is creating small code snippets about 20% of the time (more if you're willing to rewrite some of it) can't just replace teams of programmers?

I assume they actually do nothing and just wants people to think they optimized the systems, to gather support. Atleast that's a better scenario than them actually doing something, because that would probably lead to disaster.

President Elon Musk is using federal access to steal Americans' data and feed his AI, Grok. With X’s growing database, he’s building the biggest LLM to consolidate power. This isn’t innovation—it’s a hostile takeover of our information and future. Stay vigilant. #Resist #DemocracyFirst
