I actually prefer the downloadable simulator at Taiganet.com which allows you to add your own music and channel logo, and can even have different playlists for each season (or any other date ranges you prefer). They even got the original narrator to rerecord his lines for it!

Hey @darenquacks.com

Omg this is awesome. This is how I'll get my weather from now on

📌

Can I run this on @jellyfin.bsky.social

THIS IS AWESOME. THANKS!!!

Hey, this is my husband's program! He is so excited you all found it and love it! Exactly what he was hoping for when he created it. Keep enjoying it, and he's fairly responsive if you want to reach out to him through the website. Thanks for making our night!

If you want the full experience, I run a stream of the software simulator of the same Weather Channel back end with smooth jazz tunes 24-7 on Twitch - twitch.tv/retroweather... Big ups to the guy who developed the simulator: www.taiganet.com

there's even music

📌

I love this project so much!! I have a slightly modified version running with a couple changes and real Weatherscan music, running into a housewide rtmp stream. I have future plans to eventually capture that stream into an RF signal and pipe that to some uhf tvs around the house.

GLORIOUS

It even has a Docker container version! This is amazing.

@crendor.bsky.social dude, it's back!

You’re welcome

I remember when the linux svga driver was sponsored by the weather channel and would print that to dmesg on bootup and linus got mad and banned nonfunctional printf in kernel modules.

Dang, could really use a volume slider.

There’s also a version that works for locations outside the US mwood77.github.io/ws4kp-intern...

Hell yeah

The GitHub page says they used AI to generate the music, sadly :( But the rest of this is incredible.

Most weather sites are so bloated that this is really useful ...

omg

So THAT'S what happened to Retro-8s live and Twilight live, I loved those segments. Weird that they retired them so quickly.

Ok but it goes better with the Wii's weather channel tho lol youtu.be/1H5b4n0l7SY?...

And there's emulators made for other WeatherStar systems too BTW. I believe there's one for IntelliStar 2 and one for Weatherscan too.

This is so great!

aw yeah time to bust this out and chill catsystemcorp.bandcamp.com/album/sunday...

💜💜💜

Ok that’s pretty fun!

Ok. This is coolest thing ever.

mwood77.github.io/ws4kp-intern... An international version for those outside the US

I wonder if there will ever be a version that just accepts any location on the world.

I used to work in the cable TV industry so I once worked with someone who helped design that system.

This is the best thing. The hours I would spend as a kid just watching the Weather Channel. I know I had some of those songs memorized at one point. One of them was "Lily Was Here", by David Stewart, formerly of the Eurythmics.

America is already great

That's the coolest thing I've seen in ages!!

The music playback could use an audio control if you work on upgrades.

Forgot one other, there was a spiritual revival of TWC Latin America as TWC en Español in 2022. It was intended to serve the US’ Spanish speaking community that is largely underserved, but also still covered Latin America. This was short lived and died last year. Source: extreme TWC fan 😎

I'm not sure, to be honest. I think the Canadian equivalent is The Weather Network? But this site looks pretty neat and would be cool to use it for any part of the world. I got sad not being able to select my city.

@lucahjin.bsky.social

The NTSC shader really makes this.

And another docker container to setup and keep updated... hehe

Too cool

Crashed, gave my phone an an anyeurism I had to completely restart it from.

📌

Just add some smooth jazz

This is cool - and remarkably useful ...

This makes me giddy happy! Thank you so much for sharing it! 📌

I love this. So much.

Oh wow, this is a blast from the past for me. I hate being 40.

Be sure to pair it with the old school weatherscan music. Beaufort needed a whole new scale for the way this cat blows on the disco flute unknowndye.bandcamp.com/track/wxscan...

Has weather.com stopped working?

Does this also transport you to a Days Inn off the highway with one of those self-serve waffle makers perched beneath it?

This is _very_ cool. Takes me right back. The geography may be a bit off though 😆

I do now

Will it have to option to select other countries for weather forecast?

Complete with overscan and burnin?

This is what I call "retrotacular". I didn't know how badly I wanted/missed this.

Love this!

This is my new favorite thing. I can't stop listening to the music.

👨‍🍳💋

cut to emergency broadcast text THEY ARE COMING DON'T LOOK AT THE SKY THE SHADOW PEOPLE WISH TO EAT YOUR KNEECAPS FOR DINNER etc

I played with a genesis soundchip emulator VST a while back and -immediately- realized that's what I'd need to make it work for music, nothing we heard then was unfiltered and it's kinda crazy to think about. Absolutely everything on tv had the equivalent of a guitar's cabinet in front of the mix.

Oh my gosh......

Crazy how this transported me into my childhood living room

Perfect! Thanks!

Makes me feel like im on the elliptical at a Golds Gym.

📌

Oh really now.

@flyintheflannel.bsky.social !!!

Looks interesting. You can go to the National Weather Service online and do that with your zip code, too.

📌

OK, thanks
