Shout out to @joshwcomeau.com's principles. He closed his 135K Twitter account, despite it being a major marketing tool for his content and courses. He spent his final days informing his followers about the election before closing it and moving here. Protest isn't always convenient.

Appreciate it Alex ❤️ Yeah, a couple of people accused me of farming engagement, trying to profit off of the US election news. That’s one of the few things that actually got under my skin, since it was exactly the opposite 😅 I was doing it knowing it would tank my Twitter account.

It remains unclear how important Twitter has actually been for my business, but I suspect it won’t really have much of an impact. Engagement was already so low there. Lots of followers, but very few of them actually saw my content.

My follower count here is 1/20th what it was on Twitter, but it feels like way more actual humans see my content now 😄. Hopefully it lasts and it’s not just a temporary wave.

Seriously! And this site is welcome to links. See lots of threads talking about interesting articles people found. Plus, you're free to talk about whatever without it tanking your next post from what I can tell

rooting for you Josh! you're one of the few React thoughtleaders who clearly has been around the block and knows web development from first principles/shipping things over a long time

We’ve spent ages monitoring what Twitter actually brings and we settled on 10% of my followers / piccalilli followers actually saw stuff. That’s 1.6k which has long been exceeded here. Good riddance.

I don't suppose you monitored vs Mastodon too and perhaps have numbers regarding that? I'm not trying to argue in favour of Masto or anything; I'm just curious where I should invest my time for various projects going forward. I was never big on Twitter so I have nothing to compare against 😅

I remember good old days, when posting on Twitter was indeed impactful. For example, when I had ~10K followers in 2021, there was a term for me, called "Launch on twitter", same as launching on PH. And putting a direct link and getting 100 retweets wasn't something unrealistic... sigh

I'm not a social media pro anyway and suck at anything that is related to numbers on my profiles but yet it felt like I was literally blacklisted on Twitter/X and I was speaking to myself.

I'm glad to have your RSS feed in my RSS reader because indeed Twitter often just didn't show me your tweets 🤷🏻‍♀️

Josh was one of the reasons I came here, and I'll be following suit and closing my twitter account too. We need more big players to just cut ties and make the move. I'm not sure how my 261 followers will take it though 😂

If there are other people who have done something similar, please tag them or shout them out. Some people are financially reliant on Twitter. It's harder for them to walk away, so let's make sure we support them when they do.

in a time when we're all desparately searching for silver linings it's great to see folks who I respect professionally with strong moral convictions unafraid to make them known, esp in an often toxic sector that seems to increasingly love licking daddy Musk's boots

It's so tempting to do the same, even though I'm really broke right now. I wouldn't remove all tweets, I think, but sooner or later will do the same—closing an account is a better alternative than removing it completely. The only challenge is to move good followers here or in newsletter.

Like, as soon as I can see that most followers are with me, somewhere, then no doubt, it's just pleasant to be here. Like a fresh start, no bots, clean UI

Well the only way we're all going to get off of Shitter/X is if more well know people like Josh make the move. It's one thing for people like me to be here and ignore X, it's another thing entirely for him. Also Josh's blog posts are 🔥🔥🔥 really enjoy those.

I think it depends on what we mean by "leave". In my view, it’s about activity. I’ve logged out of Twitter on all of my devices and don’t spend any time there, so I think it’s fair to say I’ve left Twitter. I, as a person, am never there any more, therefore I've left.
