Just quack quack quack your way to more medical misinformation. Any double blind studies recognized by reputable medical entities—Not Sewer Swimming Brainworm Boy—that peer review such claims? Desperate to join CBS, CNN, Fox, NYTimes and other failed disreputable infotainment rags?

This is incredibly disappointing and honestly outright dangerous. It's painfully obvious this article relies more on vibes than the mountain of actual sound research and studies on Long Covid. It's been 6 years. We know that LC isn't psychological, it's absolutely physiological. Do better WIRED.

reporting on these people who just held a conference and are attracting new “patients” all the time as something you can’t talk about is the kind of thing that makes me want to cancel my subscription

You are going to lose all credibility when we learn just a little bit more about long Covid. Wired is a clickbait ass say anything for some views rag. I will never read another misinformation wired article unless I’m trying to make myself dumber.

Who is stopping anyone from talking about it? You're talking about it freely right now. Typically, these "cures" are just things that don't stand up to scientific scrutiny... You know? Like the link between autism and vaccines another thing "nobody could talk about."

„Humans need hope and change“

Alan Levinovitz@alanlevinovitz.bsky.social

But it's not because they have discovered some kind of secret. It's not because the wugu are killing you, or Nature Is Castigating Those Who Don't Masticate, or seed oils are the devil. It's b/c humans need hope and change, and one of the easiest ways to provide it is in the form of dietary ritual.

Not surprising that Kaiser Permanente, both a hospital network and health insurer, put resources to “researching” a way to make Long Covid the fault of the patient.

Christ. what a horrible article. Zero evidence, you might as well be writing about fucking crystals healing Long COVID. You guys really flushed all that goodwill with the asinine AI shit last month and now this.

Thank you for this article! I lost 2-1/2 years to long Covid, getting my life back only once I turned to brain retraining as a last resort. It drives me nuts that brain retraining is where lots of recovery stories are, yet it's still not included in outcome research of various therapies.

How about a little reflection that your personal experience is not a universal one? It drives me nuts that I am repeatedly told that thinking happy thoughts will treat brain damage. A lot of people are being left for dead and I'm tired of this pseudo-scientific nonsense being highlighted.

I've had long COVID for more than six years. There is no brain retraining that can help me. My neuro has tried everything. You probably would have recovered anyway, and are erroneously attributing your recovery to brain training. There is no support for brain retraining in the SARS-CoV-2 literature.

That, there, is a problem I meet in all too many r/LongCOVIDrecovery posts. Check year-old stories & you'll find the OP has either: - Deleted their account - Stopped using their account - Only had a sprinkling of karma to begin with - Are still asking questions about treatments Testimonials ≠ RCTs

The article claims that exercise as a treatment for Long Covid is long over and basically "everybody agrees" that it's not working. But that's bullshit, right? I am not in the US, all I hear in Germany is that most medical experts still insist that only exercise can treat LC.

I figured it was absolute nonsense. "People are so afraid to suggest excercise that they don't even dare say the word anymore". In what world?!

💯% of new long Covid cases are caused by Covid infections. We need stories about avoiding infection. About stopping spread. About ending the pandemic. Do MORE to stop the spread. We're not 'since' anything. #CovidIsAirborne #CovidIsntOver #StopTheSpread #MaskUp #StayHome

The painful truth about this quack article is that myself and others are canceling our subscriptions because of it. I hope there is a box asking why so we can cite this bs article.

This is embarrassing, WIRED. I'm sad that my subscription paid for this dreck.

There are many actual studies showing what the biological mechanisms of long Covid are. You can’t just talk your self out of actual illness. This is pseudo science bs. My GM actually referred me to Becca Kennedy’s (family doctor) website watch any of the videos it’s not science based at all.

nobody in the scientific community is "baffled", it's actually kinda insane to claim this. long covid is not without precedent and research has been coming out at a rapid pace. you can in fact read a lot of it for free, something that your author should've maybe done more of

on top of all the other total bullshit in this piece — like not acknowledging the star patients are still incredibly disabled — this paints sick people who just want recognition & treatment, to not be slurred as crazy, as dangerous & scary abusers you suck shit and i’m canceling my subscription

“oh but he made some empathetic noises and said the symptoms were real!” yes dumbass that’s a manipulator 1010 trick and frankly if you fell for it, you’re a gullible child

What I find valuable about those excerpts is how they illustrate the so-called 'process' of brain retraining. I think the term itself can fool people into thinking there's more to it. But at the end of the day, it is literally just "think good thoughts and heal".

Becca Kennedy, the former lead of a multistate long Covid specialty group for Kaiser Permanente, has a controversial theory. She believes long Covid belongs to a family of chronic conditions that occur when the brain gets stuck in a feedback loop of fight or flight. www.wired.com/story/the-pa...

Becca Kennedy is a family doctor. She has no specially in chronic illness. This group has no one who specializes in chronic illness. It’s pseudo science to the nth.

they've been saying this for decades about POTS, but after decades and thousands of people trying brain-retrain efforts, it's not a recommended treatment. because there's no evidence it does anything for the underlying problem.

WIRED contributor Alan Levinovitz has spoken with a dozen formerly bedbound sufferers who credit brain retraining with partial or full recoveries from severe long Covid and other conditions. Hundreds more have shared testimonials about a range of similar approaches. www.wired.com/story/the-pa...

The guy who has repeatedly written about why biophysical disabilities are not real and people are faking in articles and a book did it again! And you let him “There is no such thing as Long Covid” Alan Levinovitz yesterday to a journalist with Long Covid on Twitter www.celiac.com/celiac-disea...

celiac.comA Review of: The Gluten Lie - And Other Myths About What You Eat by Alan Levinovitz, PhDSeveral years ago, Dr. Levinovitz contacted me by telephone, asking if he could interview me then, and in subsequent calls, for a book he was writing about gluten consumption. Assuming he, as an acade...

Right but what you seem to miss is, if we're going to believe patients, we must also believe the patients for whom these approaches haven't worked or have actually made them worse. If you want to believe patients you can't cherry pick patients to only support your preferred narrative.

It's not a theory, there is no scientific evidence for it. These hypotheses have been proposed regularly over the last 100 years for post-viral illnesses and they consistently fail to find any mechanistic evidence along the lines of brains getting stuck in feedback loops that cause the symptoms.

Never hire a writer with a history of calling people disability fakers Never hire a writer with a history of discrediting experts in different biophysical conditions saying they’re “psychogenic” and “do not exist“ as he did with Long Covid and other conditions www.celiac.com/celiac-disea...

No, most of them don't know either. Scientists are who they need to talk to. Or, they could, read. There are more than half a million peer reviewed journal articles about SARS-CoV-2 and it's sequalae, long COVID. There is no aspect of long COVID that is psychosomatic, and this piece is harmful.

So friggin disappointed in Wired for this. The author is doubling and tripling down on socials too…. Comparing those pushing back to the anti-vaccine crowd.

oh suuuure, this extremely well-evidenced treatment, just like vaccines-- oh, wait, uh, hang on-- I'm getting that there are no peer-reviewed studies on this with objective measures? none at ALL in this disease space?

I have an actual functional neurological disorder that this therapy can help with. By running this story, you hurt not only long Covid patients who might get their hopes up on satherapy that isn't actually meant for them because it's rooted in how the brain interprets pain, but also people like me

Every time this. The UK med establishment use “ it’s psychosomatic”as their get out of hard work card. Off you go dear…get better all on your own. We will leave you to it. No help, no support, no care…don’t care.

Wired should be ashamed. Maybe they should try doing some actual research before publishing this kind of crappy pseudoscience. The best thing they could do right now would be to retract the article and issue an apology to all Long Covid patients and researchers.

It kinda seems like you are allowed to talk about it, but if you mean you’re not allowed to say whatever you want without pushback then, sure, congrats on having the brain of a rightwing YouTube conspiracist

The article doesn't give you a definitive "cure" because science itself hasn't reached one yet; instead, it provides an accurate snapshot of a medical community caught between a frustratingly slow biomedical search for answers and an unproven but highly promising neuroplastic alternative.🤷‍♂️

The Conventional Standby: It references a major BMJ systematic review by Zeraatkar et al. This study analyzed dozens of trials and concluded with "moderate certainty" that online Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mild physical rehabilitation are the only treatments with proven modest benefits.

The Neuroplastic/Mind-Body Alternative: It highlights the work of Dr. Becca Kennedy and Dr. Howard Schubiner from the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms (ATNS). They view Long Covid as a nervous system stuck in a "fight-or-flight" loop. /1

the Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess study (by Mike Donnino et al.) tracking Psychophysiologic Symptom Relief Therapy. This pilot showed massive symptom reductions (e.g., pain down 50%, brain fog down 67%), but it was a small, non-randomized trial of just 23 people.

Huh, I didn’t realize we could just do brain retraining to get rid of the autoantibodies in LC. Why didn’t I think of that before? And maybe I should have used essential oils and positive thinking to treat my highly aggressive cancer 20 years ago instead of surgeries and immunotherapy? 🤷

The scientific community is not "baffled." Many doctors are baffled. Scientists are working as fast as they can to find treatments, just as they did with HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of us have no option but to wait and hope for a breakthrough, and this nonsense is not helpful.

That @wired.com hit piece on Long COVID was actually a masterclass in gaslighting. Name-drop the hard science, only to dismiss it. Make it sound like all sides of this "debate" have legitimate arguments. It's the Climate Hoax all over again. "Climate skeptics are afraid of activist backlash".

Long Covid is not "baffling" at all. There are thousands of publications which show multi-system pathology across all body systems, including extensive evidence of organ damage. The scientific and clinical evidence is undeniable and should be reported about accurately

Check wastewater levels. The height was much more recent than that. It largely changed from acute lethality to long term sequelae, but it's still dangerous af & this article is full of dangerous pseudoscience.

This is LC Reddit. Do these seem like people who could be cured with breathing exercises and happy thoughts? Or they sound like people who have tried everything they can and have been left to die by a society that has decided we're just the price to be paid to pretend the pandemic is over?

As a person w long COVID, I cannot overstate how harmful & unscientific this article is. Pushes the well debunked claims that exercise can help people w PEM and that brain retraining is a cure-all. We need real research. We are being left to die & this article is making things worse.
