This prize was awarded because the Ice Cube observatory has been fantastically successful at detecting neutrinos from the cosmos (especially really intriguing high-energy ones) and also because “instead of building a big tank of water, why don’t we just kit out a whole ice cap” is a really neat idea

LLMs could be the end of the “shut up and calculate” approach to fundamental physics. (Not that Kyle is part of that.) When the computer is better at calculating than you are, you might be forced to actually think about things.
Wow, I just found out that our team has been scooped by Anthropic www.anthropic.com/research/yes... See the addendum of the post “How does it feel to be scooped by a machine?” written by my collaborator Lance Dixon (who was under NDA while checking the result)

Claude has produced a formalized proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. Of course FLT had already been proven by Andrew Wiles, but this proof is simpler, and “formalized” means machine-verifiable. The news isn’t the proof, but the form. Still too long to fit in a page margin, though.

Surprising: frontier models (Claude, ChatGPT, Deepseek V4) produce the most predictable text of any local AI model or human text I've ever tested. Not surprising: Finnegans Wake is off the charts, by far least predictable—Shannon & Lydia Liu proved right—and Hemingway the most predictable human.
Shannon measured the information rate of English at ~1 bit per character. According to a byte-level LLM measuring next-character predictability in LLM & human text (diaries, abstracts, dreams, fiction), aligned models produce sub-English information rates & LLM text is more predictable than humans'.

Reposting this for the evening/afternoon US crowd: I wrote about what happens if an eensie weensie black hole from the dawn of time passes through your brain. Yes, seriously. There was an actual scientific journal paper about it and everything.
Subatomic black holes from ancient cosmic history could, in principle, make you have a very bad day. But chances are you’ll never encounter one

Trump does not think strategically, historically, geographically, or even rationally. He does not connect actions he takes on one day to events that occur weeks later. Allied leaders know that if they help him in the Gulf, he won't be grateful, or even remember www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

In its first year of operation, the VRO is expected to capture images of more objects than all objects optically observed in the history of humanity (!)
And we're off! My most favourite telescope, the Vera Rubin Observatory, has turned on its public alert stream and boy, were there a lot of changes in the Universe last night. More coming: ~7 million a night 😮: exploding stars, belching black holes, asteroids cruising through the solar system. 🤗🔭🧪

The question of whether LLMs are conscious is now settled. @erikhoel.blogsky.venki.dev’s approach is agnostic about which theory of consciousness is right. Empirically, LLMs are equivalent to a lookup table, which is manifestly not conscious. But a future A.I. system that learns on the fly might be.

The fact that the thing we're calling artificial intelligence *can't do math* and yet we're jamming it into programs that successfully *have done math* for decades, then warning people against using the AI to do math, seems like an excellent summary of where we are.

The fact that human language can be broken down on a mathematical level like this to such an extent, WITHOUT building a genuinely thinking mind behind it, is an immense and deeply unexpected discovery about language and cognition. This is something that shouldn’t be possible, and now it is.

That’s it. The rapid establishment of ICE as an all-purpose, super well-funded secret police with zero accountability is *the* main story right now.
Harvard sociologist/polisci Theda Skocpol explains how the vast expansion of ICE in BBB may be Trump's secret weapon to overcome the barriers of federalism and complete his autocratic takeover of the American state. (History from Germany & Hungary in 20s/30s.) talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/criti...
