Gonna start posting projects I'm working on here since that seems to be what I spend my time on anyway. Today's is swipe keyboard for MacOS: github.com/abwagner/Tra... My 4 week old really likes being held, and I didn't find any free options. Wild that this isn't in MacOS already tbh.

can't believe this essay is four years old, but yeah, the key to understanding a lot of policy debates about urbanism is that by controlling where people live, you can profoundly affect their life outcomes this is kind of obvious stated plainly but is worth reflecting on

if the thing you want to say is "i am very mad about ai" it is ok to just say that. people, even """pro ai""" people, are much more receptive to "i am having big feelings" than "i have fully left my own knowledge base to parrot trivially falsifiable lies"
at which point, there is simply not substance to what homegirl is saying beyond "i am very mad someone QT'd me to talk about ai" and if she'd just said that, she probably coulda gotten a desirable outcome

Okay so I've built a new Atlas, this time it lets you explore the conversations on Bluesky over the past 7 days graphically. It should update every ~6 hours and help you navigate the information environment that exists on here. I've learned a LOT about what people do here today... atlas.jazco.dev

Look, it's obvious that Iran is specifically looking to punish Trump and the Republicans, IRGC spokespeople have already explicitly said so. Seems pretty likely they're keeping their powder dry and are likely to try *something* closer to the election. We'll see what it is!
This is absolutely correct but the problem is in fact that money is required to make the system work, it's just a question of premium prices (they go up with more utilization). So the implication this saves anyone money is dubious, beyond the dubious claim about fraud itself.
People are dunking on this because in the usual case, this would be someone paying into the system without taking a benefit. But that's not what conservatives are saying They are saying insurers have phantom enrollees for zero-cost (to the insured) plans for which they receive a government subsidy

These are all extremely common sense steps, and opposition to them can be used as a useful filter for bad actors in the space.

here’s my nuclear take “Software engineer” is actually over as a job on the horizon of five years and nearly everyone in it just steps one pace right and becomes “software architecture engineer” or one pace left for “probabilistic behavior designer”
i think IT especially is going to explode positively on hiring. software dev likely takes a different shape but it's not clear to me there's going to be less of it. doors are more open now imo than they've ever been. good luck.

This is not just about math, of course. It’s about the relation between SV and academia. I think we’re right to say “good knowledge production is reflective about what has been discovered, how, and how that relates to previous inquiry.” But that will not stop our fields from being transformed.

a silver lining this week is that it feels like the first time people are talking primarily about what AI is doing or will do, as opposed to what it can’t do. let‘s say what’s good and what’s bad and figure out how to stop the bad things. not fantasize about a world where the bad is an illusion
what I mean by taking computation seriously is very concrete: asking what is actually being done with the compute. it’s mostly line of business software and process automation. slop art is culturally salient but computationally very small. doesn’t mean it’s not important, it‘s just a different angle
They brought a shovel huh. I've officially cancelled my account (after 10 years), and am fully on Bitwarden. Even if they reverse course, there's no reason to give them my money. See ya @1password.bsky.social

Wrote an ADS-B notification tool that tells me when neat aircraft are nearby so I can look at them, but testing it on vacation turns out that a lot of neat aircraft either have ADS-B off or aren't showing on trackers that forward military traffic. So now I have to bring my own ADS-B setup next year.

The fact that it is fast becoming a culture war issue and large portions of the left are disowning anyone engaged with it as a tool means we'll fail to meaningfully regulate it, and that should be what actually frightens people.
its been said many times but it is absolutely insane to watch the left shoot themselves in the foot by hopping on this anti-AI train. a massive generational L awaits.
