TV news is in crisis- and the way it operates guarantees its extinction in the attention economy. I've thought a lot about how it needs to change. On Wednesday, I had the honour of delivering the Steve Hewlett RTS Lecture. Watch/read below. goodallandgoodluck.substack.com/p/can-tv-new...

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

Yes to rejoining Europe. No to a second referendum. Plebiscites are an abdication of responsibility and judgement, a terrible method of deciding what is in a nations interest.

New post: The Tory conference represented a clear change in strategy. But so far the shift has been largely superficial and rhetorical. There are three big problems with making the strategy work - and it is not at all clear they're resolvable. samf.substack.com/p/the-three-...

Wider context to the Holborn result: this chart shows the proportion of Labour’s 2024 vote going to different parties. Post Gorton over 1 in 10 Labour 24 voters were going to the Greens - that number has more than halved as Labour’s retention improved, particularly on the left.

The Greens' embrace of left populism has been an unmitigated disaster. At a moment when climate politics is more contested than ever, they've abandoned their post. Not just in Camden last night but in Lambeth too. Serious figures need to act.

There’s a fine line between righteous anger over the war in Gaza and seeming obsessive/extreme. Big difference speaking to voters in Holborn and St Pancras compared with Gorton and Denton was how many felt the Greens had moved into the second category

Feinstein and the Greens combined got just over 29% in 2024, so Polanski has not even added four percentage points to the number. That's a poor showing. There's no way round that for the Greens.

3000+ majority for Labour, comfortable and a sign of Burnham’s gains on the left. Labour vote barely drops. Green vote significantly up from 2024, but less impressive if you assume lots of Feinstein 2024 voters went to the Greens. Bad result for the Greens but not at worst end

Just discovered this. Essential listening for those who want to understand how Labour is shaped by it's history and the myths that have hidden the true nature of that history.
