The scandal of an overpaid Principal at Edinburgh University setting in motion a "vampiric" programme of job cuts gets even worse.
Investigative reporting from the journalists of The Ferret highlights Principal Peter Mathieson's murky second job:

My friend Patrick Prominski and I are working on an edited volume on how now-discredited ideas involving biology (widely construed) were used in scientific fiction from c. 1825-1925. If you have any ideas for anything even broadly along those lines, please pitch them, we'd love to see them!
Being trans in UK since 2024 election:
-Puberty blocker ban made permanent
-U18 HRT ban
-Gender Recognition Certificate now meaningless
-Trans Section 28
-Welsh ADULT surgery withdrawn
-Transphobic language & hate normalised
-Civil service toilet ban
-Hospital ward ban
-Hear it's "dignity & respect"
The NHS promises "privacy, dignity and safety" for all its patients in new guidance that directs hospitals not to respect trans people's identities.
Also, somebody impersonating a trans organization in Texas sent fraudulent texts to Republicans. And, nobody trusts Republicans on trans issues.

The Humanities at Risk: A Statement from the Scottish Society for Northern Studies
The Society expresses deep concerns about ongoing university cuts to research, teaching, and engagement in Hums and Social Sciences - sounding the alarm about long-term consequences and losses to Scottish and UK HE
Ulster University spent £800,000 on a project that was then abandoned. They are now proposing up to 450 staff redundancies.
We have to expose the hypocrisy and incompetence of many of those leading the higher education sector in 2026.

I was blown away by Naza, which I saw today as part of a sold out audience in Glasgow. I urge everyone to see it, and learn exactly what horrors Sally Rooney, among countless others, is being banned and policed for protesting. Do we want to be part of a state that protects and promotes genocide?
banning trans people from "mixed sex" spaces = *all public* spaces. this is where the debate in the UK is now & where the GOP wants to take it here in US
Join striking staff, and students from across Scotland on Monday 19th October at the from of the Tower Building from 10am.
This is the first day for new Principal Angela Scott, and we are calling all members, colleagues, students and supporters to show their support and say “No more job cuts!”.
I REALLY don’t understand why so many people think Andy Burnham is “progressive”.
He hasn’t even been in office for three months and we already have a book ban.
A BOOK BAN.
What comes next…?

BREAKING
Labour MP @ianbyrnemp.bsky.social also calls for the ban on Palestine Action to be lifted.
This follows news that Irish author Sally Rooney cannot sell her chart-topping books in the UK due to her support for the group.
Lift The Ban on Palestine Action.

Absurd. Unhinged. And breathtakingly dumb. All at the same time. It is moments like these where the UK declines to act like a serious country and falls headlong into self-parody.

Fascinating to witness countries like UK that have long lectured us colonised folk on free speech die on this hill!
Sally Rooney’s principled stance should shame many writers on these isles. Brava!

So I assume all the Nicola Sturgeon accusations that 'she must have known, she was living with him' will now be levelled (with slight modification) at Gove, yes?
Bethany wore a “Protect The Dolls” t-shirt during rehearsals. The BBC posted it on their socials then quietly deleted and reposted it without showing her from the front. On TV last night they actually blurred the message #Strictly
Day 9 of the UCU workers' strike at the University of Edinburgh. Camaraderie on the picketlines continues to blossom.
Our canine friends are also there in support:
21 years of Sensible, Moderate government lads. This is the common sense stuff, shunning extremist, magical unicorn nonsense. The triumph of the Grown Ups, whom are back In Charge.

Day 8 of the UCU workers' strike at the University of Edinburgh against the job cuts imposed by senior management and their burgeoning salaries.
Yesterday, a victory: the Principal announced he is stepping down in 2028.
We must, however, change the system that elects Principals ...
560 (!!!) FTE cuts approved & closure of music and languages courses. absolutely horrific proposals coming out of Nottingham.
measuring ‘interest’ in languages in n of students on UG degrees is so disingenuous—language modules can be combined with anything!

From the Scottish Enlightenment to the Scottish Endarkenment
Scotland’s universities are falling apart. Edinburgh is axing 90 degree courses in arts and humanities including single honours Scottish Literature. These are the courses that teach Scotland about Scotland

'The University of Nottingham has confirmed that it will close its music and languages departments as it presses ahead with more than 500 job cuts despite widespread opposition from staff and students.'
A blight on East Midlands and UK higher education.
Day 7 of the UCU workers' strike against the job cuts and worsening conditions of staff under the current management regime.
Our principal, Peter Mathieson, under whose leadership the cuts & a supposed financial black hole of £140 suddenly emerged, has announced his intention to step down in 2029.
Well done to our inspirational colleagues at @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social for holding strong on their first week of strike! So much solidarity is with you across the whole sector ❤️
Day 5 of the UCU workers' strike against massive job cuts by highly remunerated senior management.
“We are looking at hundreds of job losses, dozens of course closures ... Without even mentioning the removal of opportunities for people up and down Scotland."
Jo Grady, UCU President, 01.10.2026
'Lecturers and support staff say the action by members of the UCU, the EIS and Unison on Thursday could effectively stop the university from operating.
Management at the university plan to cut about 50 posts and say they have not ruled out compulsory redundancies.'
I wrote for @thecut.com about the Cornell case and what it says that, at my institution and many others like it, protesters are often punished more harshly than sexual assailants www.thecut.com/article/what...
Our members at Nottingham University commence strike action today over threats to hundreds of jobs and course closures.
Please show them solidarity as they head onto picket lines this morning.
Dundee suffering from Schrodinger’s deficit- it’s there when management want to cut staff, but on SFC’s closer inspection not enough to qualify for SFC relief. Which is it?🤔 Solidarity with @ducuuo.bsky.social as they fight for their jobs and their institution
The University of Dundee is making over 100 people redundant next month
At the same time it is having to explain why it has so much cash that the Scottish Funding Council won’t release £27m of extra funding!
Join our strike to rule out compulsory redundancies.

Dundee University is continuing with compulsory redundancies. It argues this is required for the financial survival.
However, the University’s cash is so high they may not qualify for £27m of the £40m additional SFC funding. The SFC have asked PWC to investigate.
