yes. conservatives looked at the american experiment in mass, high quality education over the course of the 20th century and concluded that it was a failure that threatened to overturn existing hierarchies of status.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

I keep telling people about how the Christian "Left Behind" books, literal fantasies about the apocalypse, were super, super popular in the late 90s/ early 2000s. I used to read them. Major disasters, while terrible, were also framed by evangelical churches as titillating...sexy almost.

Dave Willner@dwillner.bsky.social

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

Guys: all nuances and logic aside, you give an inch they take a mile. You know that right? Don’t be stupid. If you can’t be tough on the little things, how do u expect to do anything when the chips are Really down. Act accordingly

a lot of people act like there's a trade being offered where we give up trans athletes in sports and in exchange fascism is defeated forever

btw everyone doing this was also homophobic until that suddenly became gauche in like 2013

shaunt@shaunvids.bsky.social

the republicans are wide open on several fronts, historically unpopular president, unpopular war, record high gas. any dem throwing trans people under the bus at this moment is doing it because they want to. not like they need to, do they. even if it worked as a vote winner, which it doesn't

eliminate EV subsidies, ban cheap overseas EVs, ban EV component import, deport people bringing battery technology to the US, pay billions to kill clean energy projects, end fuel economy standards, and then do THIS is such an elaborate prank on the American people you almost have to respect it

chat is that good

Posting my work on Meta platforms again to appease the content gremlins but I'll share here too since I like y'all better anyway. Here we have a little watercolor sketch of Cricket Cafe, which is the first place Kaytee and I went to eat the week we moved to Portland.

The international chess Federation banned trans women from playing women's chess. CHESS. It's not about fairness. The fairness argument is intended to radicalize people into more violent forms of transphobia.

That rock skipping, yes tossing stones across a pond or river, is a gender segregated sport, should tell you something about how gendered sports are not about fairness of physical ability, and is instead about the male ego

sorry, but torturing the omelas kid is just a smart move, polling-wise. i personally wish there wasn't a kid in the omelas hole--of course i do!--but let's not get distracted by purity tests, here.

the "funny" thing is, many figured that this was already the case, and the great thing about US privacy laws is that they're based on a "reasonable expectation of privacy" which means that every shift in public perception of privacy erodes our actual rights

Jordan@jordanfreiman.bsky.social

It would be so cool if anybody who is nominally In Charge had bothered to do anything about this obvious end point when every company made it impossible to buy something that isn't connected to the internet over the last 15 years

The Supreme Court blocked the student loan forgiveness despite there being explicit statutory authority for Biden to do it and allowed the Iran War despite an explicit Constitutional prohibition on anyone besides Congress declaring a war.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

It gets worse when you remember that the Strait of Hormuz was open before the war started. So we’re spending $40B and people are dying on both sides to return to the status quo from January. Everything is socialism unless it’s money for killing people in pointless forever wars.

Remember if you’ve ever heard a Republican claim they’re actually ok with immigration but just want all the immigrants to do it legally, they were lying

Newsom said absolutely nothing when his own state troopers shot a journalist at a protest or when the LAPD routinely attacked reporters and photographers He is a world-class hypocrite

Governor Newsom Press Office@govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov

This is outrageous. A free press cannot function under constant threats and retaliation from the government. Reporters must be free to hold those in power accountable — without fear of retribution. The assault on the free press must end!

The excesses of the Woke 1 era mostly amount to cringe public statements, harmless vocabulary updates and loss of prestige for public figures. The backlash to Woke 1, on the other hand, is imprisoning dissidents, dismantling public education and eroding democracy. That's what needs reckoning

really getting the feeling that if employers stopped understaffing & underpaying, and people had more leisure time and better healthcare, this whole ai thing would be a fuckin blip

People wonder why progressives/leftists keep talking about class warfare, and it’s because the rich keep waging war on us. JFC, the C-suite thinks you should be slaves so they can buy a 7th yacht or cum on the moon or whatever.

In what I can only describe as the most personally devastating voicemail transcript I’ve ever seen, this is the call I just got from my physical therapist’s office, “Whole Body Health Physical Therapy”
