The “something” in question was the workers themselves deciding by 1966 that they no longer wanted New Dealer welfare capitalism if it meant black Americans would benefit from it while anti-war protesters were free to burn the flag
Something happened in the 70's that crystallized politics (and many other topics) into a new set of assumptions and priors. It gave rise to Reaganism and completely crushed New Deal Socialism; Dems that eventually reemerged were and still are centrists scared of their own shadows.
I strongly suspect part of Trump's stickiness is that it would be difficult for the American public to acknowledge what they've enabled, either through advocacy, cowardice, or complicity. The shame of recognizing who we've elevated to the most powerful office in the world is too much to bear.
These people don’t want to win; they don’t even want to persuade. They want a world where they are a pure and rarified elite, with none of the responsibilities of actual power, only the smug gratification of being right.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
Devastating news. Star Trek is such a foundation of my life, and the original series cast means so much to me. It always seemed like they would be around forever.
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
So how did Lula come from behind to defeat Bolsonaro?
In short, turnout.
Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. But Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in the first round & won eliminated candidates' votes.
A remarkable mobilisation. Second round turnout is usually below first.
excuse me ‘obama’ but our nation’s proudest and most toothless yokels think of the cheesecake factory as a sort of high end golden corral which fyi means a lot in their culture. i know this because a lot of them used to janitor for my young republicans meetings at yale
I grew up in a lower income immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster for "special days." But we also understood the White House should not look like the inside of Red Lobster. It's condescending to assuming working ppl are culturally illiterate bc their experience is shaped by their limited means.
I love ME2 and ME3, but I don't think the series ever had the sense of wonder the first game had. The awe at exploring the galaxy and discovering this entire universe of which you were a very small part. I also don't think the Reapers ever surpassed the Sovereign reveal.
sigmund? sigmund it's your cousin marvin... marvin freud... you know the thing you've been talking about where there's some libidinal force inside us that seeks egoic shattering even unto death... well you're not gonna believe this but I'm looking at the news and im thinking, call it the death drive
Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching.
It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big!
President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!
youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"
It is truly something the degree to which most American media industries have largely self-immolated on grounds of making their core product too expensive to produce*. The film industry has started to find a way out of this mess. I hope TV and games are not far behind.

Saudi Arabia (majority stake) and Jared Kushner (minority stake) buying Electronic Arts is one of the underrated instances of oligarchic media consolidation.
Should be considered along similar lines as the Ellisons taking over Warner Bros.-Discovery or Musk taking over Twitter.

Devastating news. Bioware games have been part of my life for so long now, ever since playing KOTOR as a kid. Knowing they won't even get to finish Mass Effect 5 is just heartbreaking. I feel so bad for everyone who works there and I hope they get the work they deserve.
