There is an arcane ceremony known to only a few dozen people in the world that controls and secures the vast, vast majority of traffic on the internet

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders? We don't all have the same number of bones or muscles. There's an average, I guess. We all kind of cluster around it. Some muscles are pretty rare. Some people just invent their own artisanal bones.

Change your mindset from “you should be happy because it could be worse” to “demand more because more is absolutely fucking possible.” If I’ve learned nothing from over 25 years of writing about politics, I have learned this.

I have been praying for this kind of pushback from Democrats against Elon Musk for a long time now and I am thrilled that the Talarico camp is leaning into it. Light. Him. Up.

Team Talarico@teamtalaricohq.bsky.social

NEW AD: Have you seen these anti-Talarico attack ads? Elon Musk paid for nearly all of them. The world's first trillionaire knows if he drags the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything. Elon Musk: Texas is not for sale.

I think AI is useful if either a) you're carefully verifying that the output is fit for purpose or b) whether the output is fit for purpose doesn't matter (prototypes etc.). If the output matters, then you should be verifying it, and if you're not, you're not doing the job you're being paid for

I guess my thought is that substantially all the software I'm responsible for is "mission critical". I've always gravitated to problems that matter

I have been calling this "fuck them into the sun" energy

Ossoff is one of the very few people adequately channeling Evelyn Normielib these days the base doesn't want to hear entreaties to our better natures, they don't want to go high while the other side goes low, they want someone to come on the TV and go "these people are garbage" he's good at it

look, if you're worried about being remembered, don't try to pursue immortality or whatever, the smart move is to start selling substandard copper and then make sure anyone who complains deposits a physical copy of that complaint in a site that will later be archaeologically significant

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

I take issue with your using a word I don't know, even though I could easily guess it from context. No, I didn't read all the way to the end of your post, what does that have to do with anything?

Every week, the Muppets have to put on a show to salvage a new institution: the Kennedy Center, the Supreme Court, the No-Mask Lesbian Bar, the Wonka Experience, Kozmo Dot Com (this has a time travel dimension, à la Quantum Leap), Cafe Loup in the West Village, democracy, the third season of GLOW

Just because it's smarter than he is doesn't mean we all have to change the name. That said, I bet Slovenia is excited about the new domain name hosting revenue

I think meaning comes from effort in service of something we value. Denying ourselves the opportunity to exert this effort cuts us off from this source of meaning in our lives.

This doesn't apply everywhere, and surely oftentimes the solution of tedium/drudgery is systematic change. But where that is not possible either in general or right away, let's not be so quick to agree that there is no value to be found in the experiences. >>

the whole thing of being open-minded isn’t saying all viewpoints are equally valid, it’s subjecting them all to equal scrutiny then rejecting the ones that are evil or backwards or stupid

I need to make this clear: If you (WHOM I AM SPEAKING TO RIGHT NOW) have decided that "The Devil says he'll let us all go if we just hand over the outcast!" You *are* the villain, you *are* the monster, you *are* the bad guy. No questions. No exceptions. Liberty and Justice for ALL or GTFO

The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.

I feel like it says something about mass media that the _newest_ character on this list premiered 17 years ago (Leslie Knope, 2009). There was a whole TV show about people working at not-Walmart (Superstore) since then! It ran for six seasons! Are there really no newer references to draw from?

We tested how voters define the "working class" by asking about popular fictional characters. Voters agree most on defining Homer Simpson (+56), Fran Fine (+46), Peter Griffin (+46), and Hank Hill (+45) as working class.

The problem with never, ever having faced a single Consequence in one's entire life is that you never build the consequence-facing muscles on the little stuff, and the ineluctable ones thus hit way harder than for people who've actually experienced any before

I’m convinced that a huge cause of the derangement & dysfunction of our current age is a lot of elites, including Donald Trump, getting prompted by the pandemic to confront their own mortality for the first time ever, and freaking the fuck out.

The rules lawyer approach to prompting/wishing is, of course, antithetical to how the underlying "technology" actually works. You cannot list the perfect set of requirements as an input and expect to get back the perfect output that match those requirements. That thinking is *exactly* backwards!

People need something to strive for, something to work on, a windmill at which to tilt. These guys would rather work towards destroying all of civilization and rebuilding it from scratch than giving their money away and planting a garden
