Chilling details emerged today about the Canadian government’s inaction as Israel kidnapped and abused Canadians bringing aid to Gaza. Israel shot at them, beat them, stabbed them, and left them for dead. One activist called the Canadian consulate between Israel's attacks -- but no help came:

Good for Guilbeault. It takes integrity to do this, when so much political momentum is going against climate action. It's a reminder that some things are bigger than party politics. Like the planet. Steven Guilbeault expected to quit Liberal caucus: www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/art... #cdnpoli

PM Carney: "We're a democracy. We have standards and an ability for provinces to hold referenda on a variety of subjects and if following the rules they hold referendums, obviously we support that. That means respecting the rights of Indigenous peoples, respecting the rights of people to privacy."

I've spent the last week deep in the shit that is the state of canadian democracy today and, guys in Ontario, the fact that nothing has been burned down or occupied over Doug Ford's insane attack on democracy is a very, very bad sign. It's a five alarm fire out there.

You’re asking us to essentially help fund large private companies?! Are you out of your mind lol. These should be publicly built and publicly owned projects, not PPP’s where wealthy private interests are getting even more of our money.

This is literally madness and we cannot let this happen. It will transform Canada in to a shelled out hellscape, in the service of a dead empire's whims.

Last week, @policyalternatives.ca put together an urgent call for Canada to tax the profits that the oil and gas industry is making off the war in Iran. Yesterday, the best Carney could do was removing tax on average people, further defunding the state. www.policyalternatives.ca/news-researc...

Today, the NDP is calling on the Carney government to implement a national ban on surveillance pricing - before it becomes a predatory new normal in Canadian life. Canadians are already being squeezed by the untenable cost of living. It’s time to stop the practice dead in its tracks.

Carneyan "nation-building" means massive transfers of public funds to the private sector, steep cuts to public services, weakening of climate policy, militarization, and an abandonment of values on almost every social issue in favour of corporate profits.

Jörg Broschek 🇨🇦@jbroschek.bsky.social

Pierre E. Trudeau articulated a relatively coherent concept of nation-building - also as an alternative to Clark's "community of communities". The Carney government has never even attempted to define what it means by that. So what exactly is it about the "mission" that attracts the floor-crossers?

Avi's father just passed, days after Avi won NDP leadership. In his speech, Avi said his dad had told him, of his dreams of a better world, "not in my lifetime, maybe in yours." Incredible Stephen Lewis lived just long enough to see Avi take that first step in refusing to say that to his own kid:

Rachel Gilmore@rachelgilmore.bsky.social

Avi’s grandfather had once told his father, “‘son, not in my lifetime, but maybe in yours.’” “Recently, my dad told me the same thing: ‘not in my lifetime, maybe in yours,’” Avi shares. “Well dad, I refuse to tell that to my kid. We cannot wait another generation. We’ve got to start winning now.”

All it has taken is fear of Trump and a banker running as a Liberal to get most Canadians on board with abandoning human rights, the environment, international law, government transparency, and public services. I that admit I did not see our values being quite as weak and performative as that.
