even abstracted into hypothetical maths this doesn't make any sense. picking the lesser evil still makes things more evil, just by a lesser amount

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

It is, fundamentally, an exercise of choosing the lesser evil, over and over and over again, so that the total amount of evil in the system decreases over time. And you must keep doing it, because - since evil is easy - good is easily reversed.

Agreed. Donald J Trump HATES competition.

Hey, just a humble, respectful request. For the love of fucking god, stop fucking attacking Donald Trump with blatant and repulsive homophobia. If you think going after fascists by calling them gay or producing AI slop of them in dresses or making out, you're part of the fucking problem.

you're at the point where you fully accept "the politicians will never, ever listen to their constituents, so we have to pressure the constituents to align with the politicians." and maybe, in a trolley problem sense, that is the more ethical option. but how can you call that "saving democracy"?

Thank you to everyone who stood with me over the years. Itโ€™s been a scary journey but I have always been grounded in my work and ability to provide exemplary service to my constituents. Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress.

A fantastic start for someone tasked with communicating the President's policies to the public. Can't even communicate her own resume. An administration of clowns.

This cartoon has been living in my head for at least fifty years. A few years back I found a copy of it in some cartoon museum. That link seems to be gone now, but today seemed like a good time to repost it.

One of the only silver linings around fascism is the inevitable ineptitude. It cannot last. Blinded by their smug ego-centric delusions and unquenchable thirst for sycophantic adulation, they ultimately become the architects of their own destruction.

Texas Republicans redrew the state's congressional map, making a bet that Latino voters who broke for President Trump in 2024 could be the foundation for victory in 2026. But immigration crackdowns and rising costs may be splintering the coalition. https://to.pbs.org/4iQzlor

This will end. How much they damage, and how many they kill, before that happens, we are still tallying. May it be soon and sudden.

You can't have a functioning capitalist society unless people are compelled to work. Outright slavery was outlawed, so capitalism turned to wage slavery. A system that allows people to live long without working robs capitalists of their cudgel to force people to work, even in inhumane conditions.

My column on how the level of Jobseeker kills people. And those running the economy for over 30 years have decided that is how it should be. www.theguardian.com/business/gro...

Only the threat of homelessness and starvation keeps people going back to jobs and bosses they hate. People lived for thousands of years without working a job. Capitalists had to create governments and laws to force people out of that lifestyle and propaganda to prevent them from returning.

It's ironic for a female pastor to criticize a tribe for practicing its rituals on Biblical grounds. Has she not read in her Bible that she ought to remain silent and let the men teach? If she can reinterpret that, then she has all the tools needed to make space for other peaceful religions.

Maybe Ed, maybe... but you decided to keep touring without him, so you accepted the decision; you are complicit. Your band and openers certainly felt like they had a choice to make, and they walked away. What a coward.

AI companies want regulation because their lobbyists will get to write it, and they'll use it to kill off smaller, cheaper models. Regulations usually favour large, established companies that can afford the paperwork and hurt smaller companies that are trying to innovate.

I'm not saying regulation isn't needed, but you should always be worried when the companies that need it the most are supporting it โ€“ it means they see an opportunity for profit, NOT that they have suddenly grown a conscience.
