Either there’s rule of law or there’s not. Either we are defined by a system of justice that holds the guilty accountable or we aren’t. Either we have a democracy that limits abuse to define our public life and the rights of citizens or we have a country collapsing into strongman authoritarianism.

I'll to come right out and say it: statistical extrapolation is *fine*. One of the most useful ways to understand the present and anticipate the future is measuring the things that happened in the past, find the correlations among them, and extrapolate likely future outcomes from those correlations.

The fact Donald Trump told his supporters last night to "Cheat like hell" in 2026 election BUT that isn't the headline nationwide shows you again how corporate media is complicit.

That I will go out with my family, my friends, I'll do it any way - I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm going to try to cheat like hell..."

NEWS: New York City just recorded the safest summer in its history. From June through August, NYC saw its fewest shootings, shooting victims, and murders on record. Major crime fell 6.2% year-to-date, murders plunged 24.1%, and the subway had zero murders, shootings, or rapes in August.

I don’t agree with all Abdul El-Sayed’s views, but GOP “othering” is a disgrace. He was born in US, educated at Bloomfield Hills Andover, where he captained football team; Univ of Mich; Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar; Columbia, where he earned an MD. Debate his views, not whether he’s a “real” American.

The thing to understand about Todd Blanche is he has no values other than the next job. This man will do ANYTHING to get confirmed as Trump’s attorney general. Settle the mifepristone cases? Enforce Comstock as an abortion ban? Yes, sure, whatever it takes.

Great anti-doomscrolling thread. Reminder of (lots of) things not to take for granted that have materially improved in this Gen-Xer's lifetime.

I'm old enough to remember when this was just how Americans did business! Doubling down, denials, cover-ups, flip-flopping -- all IMMEDIATELY called out and people/orgs felt the instant burn of shame and the consequences. Bring back giving a shit about making things right. 👍

Enjoyed a fantastic Saturday night of free will, which basically consisted of my wife and I casting YouTube videos of 90's music to the living room TV. I realized I didn't have the Lords of the Underground's 1993 LP "Here Come the Lords" in my Plex collection of obscure 90's rap. Remedied that.

How appropriate that, in the year when we celebrate the 250th anniversary of a revolution fought beneath the banner of "No Taxation Without Representation!", the party in power is taxing states shut out of political power to fund programs in states that do have power.

Since the World Cup is fresh on everyone's mind - this is a TRUMP OWN GOAL. Doing this by *accident* should have been sufficient to immediately send GOP numbers into the toilet en masse and the whole admin into turmoil. What a sad statement on our electorate that it's still business as usual.

Yet another Kalshi offering that serves no legitimate economic purpose. It's not possible to make a rational bet on this without material non-public information. It's a market solely for fraud by both regulators and corporate insiders, and everyone connected to it in any way should go to prison.

The news is always "This absolute fool was dismantled in hearings today. He is manifestly unqualified for the position and would be an existential danger if confirmed. Disaster. He is set to be confirmed immediately." When you ask why everyone is furious and exhausted all the time, this is why.

The first few days of working out after a prolonged bout of sedentarism are so incredibly humbling. Invest in your body when you're young. It's so, so much harder when you're 50+ and realize you need to change something 🫠

This thread makes me sad. I'm in a tech field but writing has always been my superpower and even today, when I'm strongly advised to "feed my draft to the LLM" before submitting, I recoil. Maybe AI has a value in written comms, but if so, it should be limited to transactional/ bureaucratic stuff.

At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

Having worked at one of the early startups that allowed "nontechnical" people to create their own videogames - everyone assumed that removing the coding barrier would unleash creativity. This was incorrect, to put it mildly. Creativity is/was the rarest ingredient. And AI isn't helping that now.

Robert Komaniecki@komaniecki.bsky.social

Feels like a lot of STEM guys believed coding was the hardest thing a human could do, and assumed that once somebody invented an AI that can code, it would follow naturally that the AI can do all of the lesser non-coding things that other dumber people were doing
