BREAKING: Nearly 3000 voters in one Georgia county haven't received their absentee ballots yet, putting them at risk of missing the Election Day deadline to vote by mail.
They're asking a judge to order the county to overnight their ballots to avoid being disenfranchised.
My parents complain that I am stubborn. In these crazy times, being stubborn is necessary.
Vought terminated $ billions in funding across federal agencies.
Scientists have had to resort to fundraising to finish the projects that they started. Science can't stop.

During the 2025 legislative session, the Mississippi Legislature passed and Gov. Tate Reeves signed a bill into law prohibiting county election officials from changing polling places within 60 days of an election except in exigent circumstances.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
Why do people bother to publish open-access when they submit their supplementary data in a proprietary format? Why do journals let them?
Yet another image I can't curate because the authors bypassed .jpg, .png, .bmp, .pdf and went with .eps instead.
I named a character in MAZYWOOD “Priscilla Stephens” after my 88-year-old aunt, a 1960s civil rights warrior in ailing health. She came to my book signing in Miami and was surprised to hear her name in my reading. 😍 I am still trying to raise money to help offset her bills.

"The past two years are all the proof you need that sitting out an election because the better candidate happens to not be perfectly to your liking is completely stupid and self-destructive."
In a little-noticed webpage update, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a plan to decommission its online web archive at the end of the year, a move that would wipe tens of thousands of publicly available environmental resources from the web.

He wasn’t even the person ICE was looking for.
Now Texas voters are leaving their “I Voted” stickers at his memorial.

I wish pundits offered evidence to support the cliche that “Democratic candidates…got carried away with pronouns and identity politics” or that liberals sometimes direct “condescension…toward working-class Americans.” As it happens, the only example Kristof offers of such condescension is his own.
Both my (very religious) parents voted against the Washington anti-trans initiative.
I cannot explain what this means to me, but it was genuinely moving going with them to drop off their ballots.

Our dedicated, nonpartisan civil servants should not be questioned about their loyalty to Donald Trump.
They follow the law and swear an oath to our Constitution, not the occupant of the White House or his fascist regime.
It’s enraging that Ilhan Omar is being put through this, but she deserves so much credit for punching back. She’s doing her best to make it COST Trump and co for their persecution and lies.
“Pedophile protection party,” hell yes. Calling out DOJ corruption, same. If they want a fight, hit ‘em hard.
The pedophile protection party’s president is laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt DOJ in American history.
Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine. So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar.
When I try to explain to non-nerds how much our internet civilization depends on a few random smart people who maintain code libraries I wind up standing on chairs and yelling.
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
What the Attorney General of the United States seems to not understand, but the people who matter do, is that Congress hasn’t given DOJ any authority to block states from certifying the election.
This isn’t a thing. And we don’t have to pretend it’s a thing just because he says it’s a thing.
🚨🚨🚨
Q: Is there any scenario in which DOJ would try to block states from certifying the election?
AG TODD BLANCHE: Yes, of course. It is not DOJ's intention to improperly interfere with elections or the state certification process, but ...
One of the things that continually floors me is how many schools—across the country—refuse FREELY OFFERED air filters even when the science is clear that they help cut down on all airborne infections. Some schools even ban them, despite students and parents begging to be allowed to use/provide them.
The city run long covid care clinics have long wait lists and there’s no way that most people who need them would even find out about them. I have no idea what quality of care they offer as no one I know has been able to get in. Meanwhile schools & city buildings don’t have hair filtration.
The CDC might take away a key data source on Long COVID and ME. You have until this Tuesday, October 20, to tell them why that would be a mistake.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot
A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

WOW -- Vance *defends* Vivek's reprehensible ad 👇
Q: Ramaswamy's campaign put out a controversial ad featuring his opponent's mother. Some Republicans are backing away. Do you think it was appropriate?
JD VANCE: Well, I'll be honest. Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern.
I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.
The Trump admin is moving forward on plans to impose financial penalties on Americans in default on their federal student loans and hire private debt collectors to go after them.
The plans are unlikely to be announced until after the midterms.
The flies arrived in Cambridge this morning—healthy and happy! So nice to see another successful shipment! And great to draw one of our all-time-best customers out of retirement long enough to recreate our first order! Here’s to another 40 years of the BDSC helping to make fly genetics happen!
40 years ago today, the BDSC made its 1st shipment. To celebrate, Trudy Kaufman, who packed the 1st shipment, boxed up the same kinds of flies for John Roote at Cambridge, who placed the 1st order. Watch for pics of the arrival next week. We’ve shipped 4,882,378 vials total. That’s a lot of flies!
He never really contested the allegations, simply suggested it was OK to behave that way. The stories that emerged from his behavior with lab members were horrifying.
An MIT Institute did an internal investigation and found that David Sabatini, a PI, had a sexual relationship with a junior fellow. The institute found that his behavior with her was part of a larger pattern with how he conducted himself among junior staff.

"You're a NIMBY about AI data centers!"
Actually I'm a NOMP (Not On My Planet) about privately-owned fixed-location infrastructure externalizing the cost of burning hydrocarbons for energy. If they had to pay what this really costs society in health and climate harms, they wouldn't do it.
My god. A Virginia data center ran backup diesel generators full blast for 24 hours, creating a giant cloud of toxic smoke that choked its human neighbors. The government claimed there was nothing they could do.
