Oh boy, are the Right excited by this graph recently published by The Economist! And of course none of them has bothered to read the article itself (TBF, it is behind a paywall!). So as always, let's add a little context and explain why these kinds of comparisons are so problematic 🧵1/25

It's also very stupid to constantly portray some of the EU's finest achievements, like the euro and Schengen, as if they are bad things. It only strengthens the negativity that was always present in the UK. How about standing up for the EU's achievements? Doesn't inspire confidence here in the EU.

I've received waves of racism & abuse since my #BHM speech. A Shadow Minister referred to my "mates overseas" and told me I should "do one" Who exactly are my mates overseas? 🤔 Today I called out his racially-charged comment. Grateful for Speaker's response 👇🏾

Lula da Silva can now begin his 4th term as President of Brazil, and a student-led movement defeated Vučić’s! Now Netanyahu needs to be defeated in Israel, and then the fascists of the GOP at the Midterms. The world must be freed from the criminal stranglehold of billionaires and techno-fascists!

The mentality of certain "rejoiners". Trustworthy old Britain, the most trustworthy member state the EU ever had apparently, served on a bed of supremacism. Not fit to be an EU member.

Did I talk about changing the rules? Are you so naive to think that every MS upholds the rules? One of the things that some of the "bigger" MSs valued with UK membership is that we did enforce the rules, while other MSs would happily accept new rules with no intention of enforcing them.

The reification—even personification, given its capability of being ‘betrayed’—of Brexit has been the most powerful process that has enabled the past 10 grim years of stasis. It must be killed by focusing on the real lives of real people with values that are more shared than ‘brexitism’ allows.

Before of course adding that I find this obsession with "net takers" and "net contributors" tiresome and relatively irrelevant. Every EU member benefits hugely from membership, and the EU is built on solidarity so it's only normal the wealthier should pay more.
