When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

officially at the point of talk prep where I hate all my slides, everything I've ever said is annoying, I know nothing about anything, and what are words anyway

When a pilot flew through one of the strongest aurora storms in years, he saw the sky literally explode in color. From the cockpit of a Boeing 787, Matt Melnyk had a view like no one else. Flying at 37,000 feet over Manitoba, he watched as the auroras filled the entire sky. Original post

Can confirm, it's amazing how much stuff can happen if you decide you're just going to do it. It's worth 5 minutes of due diligence to make sure the thing you're doing isn't something that exists that you can join and support. But if it doesn't exist? Go make that thing happen.

Just had dinner with two people who have a very "if you think it should exist, just DO it" attitude, & my god I love when people feel this way. We would be better off if more good people with pure intentions just DID the stuff they wish existed without waiting for some power to give them permission.

Another downside of hosting stuff externally rather than using campus infrastructure: external hosting services block our cloud-based web archiving tools with aggressive captchas, and you can't just Slack the sysadmin to whitelist the crawler IP address. Back to web archiving from my laptop. 🫠

On Thursday we're going to be celebrating the relaunch of the Global Medieval Sourcebook as a static site, thereby putting to rest the very last zombie Drupal inherited from my predecessor. Join us for a frank DH project talk about how this project came to be, and three takes on where it might go.

Today's Observation: Dog vs Goose. Don't know how to explain this to you buddy, but the human holding you back is doing you a favor. The Goose would win.

Yes, yes. I need to teach them how to stay *a little* more still while shooting film. But this does capture the energy of being a third grader on a camping trip with your best friend.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL ELECTRICAL ENGINEER: ok boss, the cleanroom swap worked and we were able to reseat the storage and memory in a donor iPhone 13 from the archives. We've got about 70% of the photos and a full web history, folks at the Internet Archive sent over tape copies of the Internet-to-date.

You are mistaken, we do not respond to legal requests from anywhere other than the Swiss authorities. It is unlikely that one could build a business through ignoring the laws of the jurisdiction that it is in. The mail provider you're moving to included.

Your brain and data may be in the internet, a world that is both everywhere and nowhere. But your ass is still firmly planted in the jurisdiction of somebody's courts. And police. Proton is correct. The odds of you finding a company that won't comply with its local police are basically zero.

I still wish there was an ecosystem. We could hang out! We could send each other awesome swag and co-rent suites! We could be a little town of booths at ALA. We could give each other tips, like please don't DDOS people using your playback client.

"My husband complains about the cold," the man said. "Can you teach me a spell to keep him warm?" "I can teach you to bind hair into a net to catch heat," the wizard said, "using arcane counting and a pair of fine wands." After a while, the man said "Isn't this knitting?" "This, too, is magic."
