I just looked at what AI has to "say" about my specialist area of archaeology (malt, ale, mashing, beer brewing in prehistory) and there's sensible stuff and also quite a lot of not so sensible stuff. I can tell the difference but most folk probably can't. True for all aspects of archaeology.

Fellow archaeologists out there can we have a conversation about the use of AI in the materials we produce for the public. I know that a lot of us are increasingly frustrated by the use of AI in media and all the awful stereotypes that we have spent decades trying to challenge creeping back in

I don’t know folks, it seems to me that the kids might have been right about their ruling class being full of deeply racist, misogynist sex offenders. Perhaps that whole Cancel Culture panic was badly wrong, and apologies are in order? Not least because it was obviously vexatious *at the time*.

What is the BBC's justification for maintaining this level of coverage of Reform now it has slipped into third place?

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

correct states further down the path of autocracy than us have had those autocracies overthrown by sufficiently large voting numbers recently we can do it here too

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Another way that America seems broken and confusing is all of this "Yes on number, no on number" stuff. Like, I understand that you need to number for bureaucracy. But how do you campaign on arbitrary numbers? Or remember which is which at voting time?!

This 19th c lady’s multitool was found in the pocket(!) of an antique (1872) garment donated to the historic clothing archive at my employer. It features a button hook for fitted gloves and a tiny corkscrew. The corkscrew is too small for wine & was probably intended to open apothecary bottles.
