Basketball free throws should be worth two points each, but the hoop should move from side to side.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

now that i’m in my forties i’m trying to add a doofus gawk to my repertoire. you know when you see a guy in the grocery store stop at the end of an aisle with his mouth open and gaze down there for so long you wonder why he doesn’t just walk down the aisle? that’s the move. that’s what i want

elon musk has more empathy for lines of code than a majority of humanity

its feels like a mass psychosis where tech leaders continue to insist you can be cruel, mean, and hurt the feelings of lines of code

Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.

It’s a question that I wish was interrogated more. When you hear people’s worries about ‘Attacks on our way of life’, I wonder why some attacks (Othered) are worthy of concern, but attacks like changing climate, economic insecurity, and reduced cultural output are not.

Look, I don't even know/give much of a shit about NRL and its lore, but it is beautiful to see an end-to-end try from the Knights against Easts. #NRLGF

Once again - the problem isn't "ooo AI models are too scary and powerful". It's that the developers of these products are irresponsible dolts, who have absolutely no intention of changing how they behave. Stop making excuses, use existing laws and make them responsible for their own actions.

Ignoring advice to secure and monitor your sandboxes during testing then blaming it on your AI being so smart that it’s a threat to humanity is nasty work

Clear that Brazil has either been read the riot act, or has been drilled on a few clear things. Paying enough respect to the Socceroos this time. Good to see we're still getting our counterattacking outlets. #AUSvBRA

Claude making a scientific discovery

Carl Zimmer@carlzimmer.com

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc
