My high up editor “friend” at Wa Po tells me “we are not the bad guys” and I keep asking “what have you done to prove that” and then he stops texting back.

i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

Not a single Democrat anywhere should be afraid of doing this to absolutely every Republican who takes money from Elon Musk in 2028.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Trump and Co. will try to steal the midterms. They're already trying. Gerrymandering, bad faith lawsuits, voter intimidation, and a whole lot of lies. But they don't have a genius secret plan. They're already doing whatever they can think of. And it's beatable. Shouldn't have to, but here we are.

Getulio Vargas, who was president of #Brazil during the 1930s & 40s, was an authoritarian who did much to undermine vestiges of democracy his country. But ultimately, 🇧🇷 proved the only independent South American country to send combat troops against nazis and Italian fascists in Europe.

PlanetCarnival@planetcarnival.bsky.social

From Wikpedia on the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in WWII 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 'Before the FEB entered combat, the expression "a cobra vai fumar" ("the snake will smoke") was often used in Brazil in a context similar to "when pigs fly"; soldiers in the division subsequently called themselves Cobras Fumantes'

The mobilization itself was already not something I ever expected to see, but to actually win? Hell, to double the winning margin from the 2022 runoff? Genuinely surreal. Maybe child raping billionaires *don't* have to run the world with a shit-eating grin. Maybe that can stop.

Did the New York Times’ regular headline writers call in sick? I‘d love to see more headlines as direct as this one.

My great uncle remembered watching the 1929 crash as it was happening. He took the streetcar down to the financial district. They had a big board set up; as the numbers came in on the ticker tape a man would read it out loud and boys would write it on the big board for the crowd to see.

And, most importantly, thanks to the vital mobilisation of young people. Students took to the streets the day after the first round elections, kickstarting massive movements that saw the largest public demonstrations in Brazil since the days of Diretas Já at the end of the military dictatorship.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

One benefit of holding leaders accountable for crimes is that if Flávio Bolsonaro tries to overturn this election, he knows exactly where he’d end up. In prison, next to his father.

do you think that I, as an American, might actually be familiar with the idea that a leader can be dangerous but also a ridiculous clown

This thread comes to a close... ... as we now have a final result. Let the records show that, with 92% of the vote countywide, Lula is up 3.3%. (Can he end up doubling his 2022 margin?)

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

International phone call from Antigua Guatemala, late 1970s. A few people had home or business telephones, but most of us didn't. Physically go to the telephone & telegraph company office. Long distance calls had to be routed through Guatemala City. Request at desk, sit and wait for an open line.

Shivam Bhatt@shivambhatt.bsky.social

Calling internationally. You all have no fucking idea how hard it was to schedule a call so that someone would actually be there to pick up, and in India you'd have to call the local phone junction (called an std for some reason) and they'd send a boy out to get your aunt to come to the phone

View full thread

Tell the international operator the number you wanted to call. Even if the international call didn't go through, you still had to pay cash for the local line from Antigua to Guatemala City. Also had to pay for the Antigua to Guate line time even if the international call charges were reversed.

If you couldn't get a call through, you could send a telegram. The last place I felt need to send a telegram was in the Czech Republic in 1993, as their telephone system was still Eastern Block-y. By 1999, there were cyber-cafes all over.

Sometime one had a long wait. Sometimes there was no line to the city. If there was, a desk person would notify you, and you'd go into a telephone booth (hey, youngsters, if it doesn't have a door you can close it's not a "phone booth") to talk to the Guatemala City international operator.

In the 1960s public schools had special classrooms for the “educable mentally handicapped.” Most of those kids had lead poisoning. Lead paint was banned in U.S. in 1978. Leaded gasoline was banned in 1996. Kids’ blood levels dropped by 95%. Bans work. We should ban shit again.

What was the TV sitcom change c 1990? US tv sitcoms went from usually having 1 wacky story, to usually having 2 interlaced wacky stories. Seemed to me the change started pretty much simultaneously from "The Simpsons" and "Seinfeld" about 1990. Someone knowledgable confirm or correct? #tv
