It is pretty dang plain in the movie that Odysseus & his crew were menaces & they ain't care. Nolan has Penelope underline the point and circle it twice: "You're the people from the sea." The entire movie is about how men refuse to reckon with the societal damage they do. It's Nolan's whole THING.
