In all seriousness, I think it's one of the purest forms of storytelling there is which is why you can see the same patterns everywhere. In wrestling, the story is that two sides - one righteous, one villainous - are in conflict, and they resolve that conflict with a physical contest.

Everything is pro wrestling

A weird change that has taken place in my lifetime is that in the past, British racists were aware of what mixed-race people were and were furious about it, as opposed to the New Racism, which frequently seems actively confused by the birds and the bees.

I remember many yrs ago one of my regular customers asked another of my regular customers "I seen you in Shields th other day with a couple of [racial slur] teenagers, what was that about that?" And the other guy replied "Do you mean my fucking grandchildren?" Never seen a man visibly shrink so fast

The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.

The human rights situation here seems untenable. The rules have changed in a clearly discriminatory way, segregated "third spaces" often don't exist, trans people affected by this legally can't just resign, and they face court martial and imprisonment for rule breaking.

Incredible graph this. UK road fatalities between 1926 to 2024. That wartime peak is I think a combination of the blackout... which killed almost as many people as the bombing in the first year... and who knows.. perhaps US and other servicemen who were unused to driving on the left...

This might be a controversial point, but social media, as a concept, has done a lot to prevent people - especially neurodiverse and LGBT people - getting isolated.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I didn't hear Wes Streeting's emergency preparedness recommendations yesterday but, to me, it makes sense to always keep a small stock of a few commodities, whether it's for illness, weather, power outages etc. There's probably a few more things I could add such as bottled water, more batteries.

According to legend, it’s 31 years to the day since the Financial Times killed one of Britain’s finest poets? They didn’t mean to. It’s just that Gavin Ewart was 79, and the day before they’d bought him a lunch that involved enough booze to fell an ox. A glorious story, but is it true...?

Trans people are a materially real category of person whether you like it or not, and no amount of navel-gazing word games will change the fact that the punishment society levels at those who declare their belonging to that category is blatantly unjust.
