Everybody is out here doing the best they can with the choices they know they have, and this has weirdly been hugely radicalizing to me, because if they think behaving badly is the best or only choice society has offered them, we have mega failed.
re lrp: I read something on a fat acceptance blog long ago which I try to do sometimes: when I am on public transport or have an idle moment at my job, I look at people around me and imagine what that person would look like to me if I was someone who knew and loved them.
There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere*
Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines
As a species we decided, “we will survive”
Let’s do that some more
Is there any other business where I could steal groceries, resell them online, and then complain that if I had to pay I'd not have a business model? Because fundamentally that's what happened.
And governments are looking the other way.
It's so dispiriting.
I still think AI systems should be paying me 150k per copyright violation.
People keep asking me 'what laws do we need for AI?' and I keep saying 'enforce the fucking ones we already have!'
There are copyright laws that should be being enforced right now that just... aren't. B/c it's billionaires.
I'm not fantastic at recognizing generated text yet, but I can almost always spot a generated image from a mile away. Why? Because I live around images and have decent pattern recognition. Almost like being an expert in something makes one more familiar with its patterns.
Oof, this. Would I have been able to identify a 'definitely produced by genAI' story in the Escape Pod slush when it was just starting? Maybe.
Can I identify the (approximately) billion or so genAI emails I get every week NOW? Yep.
1. Pattern recognition
2. Quantity
3. No actual substance
And remember, all of this is happening amid the AI buildout. AI, which is not a coherent set of products and services, but rather a commercial and political project, can be understood as a full-spectrum class-war offensive. An offensive waged by one industry, which put their guy Vance in the WH.
Let’s stream public executions to the country, but DON’T YOU DARE photograph, draw, write, sell, or buy anything featuring human sexuality on the internet or else payment processors will close your bank account
We’re a bloodshed-and-cruelty-only country, we don’t cotton to displays of affection
"Health concern" is often just a socially acceptable way to express contempt.https://thickmeup.substack.com/p/they-dont-hate-us-because-were-unhealthy #ThickMeUp#HealthAtEverySize#WeightStigma#AntiDiet#DietCulture#BodyAutonomy#FatLiberation#BodyPositivity
Everyone should be fighting for Universal Healthcare and disability rights.
Health is fragile. You can become disabled or chronically ill in an instant.
It’s not a moral failing.
It can wipe out your savings and leave you destitute.
Healthcare is a basic human right.
“She refused to appear in another film, despite floods of offers right up to her death? Well, she’s in one now anyway! Haha!”
Yep, seems about right for a tech that was designed to invite the phrase “whether you like it or not”
and right when people were making algorithmic bias/inequality more visible, many of those processes were **mysteriously** relabeled "AI" and that whole conversation got erased...
✨The very last of the final edition of Fat Folks Tarot decks are finally listed on my store. 🌞 Once these are gone they are gone for good!

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A fluffy little ginger cat is slinking through a garden bed.
Body low, low, low to the ground as he creeps...
and creeps...
and creeps...
AND POUNCES.
ROLLING and CLAWING and PAWING
on a leaf
that dared twitch in the wind in front of him.
That absolutely no one is talking about remuneration for artist labor or consequences for illegal data extraction tells you everything you need to know about caring for “workers.”
An AI flyer is a brown M&M test. If your event or business is cutting corners by using an AI flyer, where else are you cutting corners? What else are you cheating out on? Why should I be bothered to go somewhere you couldn't be bothered to promote with a little of your own personality?
There are many things to admire about hummingbirds: their shiny feathers, their impressive flying abilities, their fierceness. But when I get a photo like this mostly what I think is LOOK AT THE ITTY BITTY FEETS!!!!!
(Ruby-throated Hummingbird) #birds 🌿
Exactly. A lot of the most rank eugenics I’ve heard has been out of the mouths of regular ass doctors and nurses. MAHA openly believes eugenics is virtue; doctors will say eugenics is evil, then do eugenics shit to you anyway and pretend that’s not what they’re doing.
Whenever I see someone using "autistic" as an excuse for being a dick, I think of my friends, who did the work. And of people who are not friends, because they really don't care about the person on the other side of a social transaction. /3
Dude, if your chronic illness makes showering daunting, do yourself a favor and buy a lil $30 shower stool. You can bask under the water like a grizzly bear in the falls at Katmai. 🐻🏞️ shower whenever you want, not just when you have the energy. Release the shame!! You deserve accommodations, babe🫶🏻
The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.
When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.
Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?
