Samsung users: notice anything new since the One UI update? Google just hardwired itself onto your home screen. Even if you chose DuckDuckGo.

You should be fascinated hitting the power button on your computer.

Every boot on an x86 machine iterates through the entire sequence of computing evolution in a few milliseconds:

This is genuinely a great umbrella (I’m in the UK, umbrellas are an essential item). Responsibly manufactured, looks cool, stops your head getting wet, what’s not to like?!

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

Wow. Donald Trump is giving money to Putin’s war machine so he can keep killing innocent Ukrainians and attacking democracies across Europe. The UK must lead a coalition of the willing that stands up and says no.

Iran sometimes does public executions but I can't find evidence they've ever televised one. It seems like North Korea, China, and Saudi Arabia have also never televised or livestreamed any executions. Looks like the U.S. will be in a club of one if Pete Hegseth goes through with this.

Sarah Wynn-Williams once again was forced to sit in silence. If you're thinking of seeing The Social Reckoning this weekend (& you should!), there's no starker reminder of its authoritarian power than what it's doing to Sarah Wynn-Williams. And kudos to Frances Haugen for pointing it out. 5/

If AI does everything, what are VCs investing in? If no humans work, who is buying anything? Where does capital come from? 🤔

AGI is coming for all of us. It will write symphonies, direct movies, and author the best novels. The only thing it won’t be able to do is VC investing, which must be reserved as a task only for the most-special people

You know what’s harder than performance optimization? …Deoptimization. It’s a pretty fun concept you use every day without realizing it. The *only* reason modern dynamic languages can “fly so close to the sun” is because they have a safety-net when they over optimize.

I recently heard someone describe NIN as inverse Rick Astley. I will give you up I will let you down I will run around and desert you I will make you cry I will say goodbye I will tell a lie and hurt you

People with kids are 2x as likely to tell AI something they’ve never told a therapist, doctor or close friend. 🤔 We talked to parents and caregivers in the wild to understand why 👇

Turns out application security isn't rocket science. It's learnable. It's not only for people who hacked since they were 13. We've already been doing pieces of it, we just called them "bugs" instead of "vulns" 🐛 New course with @halle.bsky.social, first cohort Oct 12 www.driyourcareer.com/security

On Diablo 3 we incorporated all of this (plus the seed for the dungeon) into the metadata when taking screenshots. You could have a folder of screenshots and drag the one you wanted into the editor to load into that exact state. Was intended for bug repro, but amazing for productivity in general.

People know that I care about performance, especially since we've almost collectively forgotten how fast our machines actually are (except for a few people that *do* care - you know who you are). This now sits at 720ms in a master build. Thread with optimizations:

Loading all 1.6GB of current assets (textures & meshes) in 570ms on my 10-year old machine (with a 2080 Ti) using IOCP and unbuffered async reads. Happy for now with this! Final optimization for deployment: loading from a single compressed archive instead of N files.
