I just got a really nice piece of feedback and it really brought home to me just how rare it is to just see someone saying nice about your work. Come join the Washerwoman's Potlatch and say something nice about someone! itch.io/jam/the-wash...

Decided to craft new version of Agential (Historical) Problem Space summary worksheet (I present a pair in Designing Historical Games for Classroom) and I'm pleased with results. Clearer, detailed but still an outline. Anyone turning ANY academic content into a game can use this. 🧵 1/ (pls share)

This is very true. If Sweeney actually thought that AI makes small-scale dev viable, why not have his employees do that in-house instead of laying them off?

Damien McFerran@damienmcferran.bsky.social

Sweeney tries to make out he's saying this in defence of the beleaguered indie devs who want to use AI, but remember that his company laid off 1000 people earlier this year before pivoting to AI. He's taking this stance for one reason: he loves money

If you missed this, absolutely go play Mini Mini Golf Golf! It involves, among many other things, an in-universe game design talk show video series which is also a vector for the future communicating with the past (because games are tunnels into the past, the future, and the lives of other people)

Three More Years@threemoreyears.bsky.social

Mini Mini Golf Golf is on sale right now for 35% off 🥳

Looking for game devs who have been directly inspired by anything BioWare for my next video. I suspect the public likely doesn’t quite realize the extent of their influence on the industry, so I’d really like to highlight that. If you are one such game devs, pls reply to this post!

Warren Spector believes that the idea of using a vertical slice to “find the fun” is total nonsense, and that if anyone says “find the nugget of fun,” you should run screaming in the opposite direction

This year’s The Disappearers, called by some critics (while praising it) arduous and difficult, takes approximately 12 hours to read. Brother, you can’t even finish Cai’s path in Fire Emblem in that time!

And as an aside - you should not doubt how fucking uncool D&D was in 1998 as a game, and how poisoned that particular well had been for a while. Baldur's Gate turned that around, and if you do want a road from D&D then to D&D now, it does strike me that Bioware's needs more credit than they get.

Something that really stuck with me from The Kingdom of God is Within You is that when you do something wrong, that's one wrong thing. When you create justifications for why it wasn't so wrong, that's two wrong things.

Steam Next Fest has over 8200+ games participating this week. Lol. Lmao. I would love to know how many of those games actually have PR because it does not seem worth it! imho! Resources are better used elsewhere!

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

I’m hopefully going to be working on a chapter about Whiggish portrayals of history in games and talking about “tech trees”… So you better believe my eyes snapped onto “tech tree following optimist”.

My thoughts on this aren't very developed, but Penguin Colony's architectural confronting of Lovecraft's fascist imaginary seems interesting to play alongside International Obsession from thecatamites, specifically the latter's twisty Model League of Nations exhibition space.

one more igf comment - this is the best year we've ever had for student games, bar none. bar fucking NONE. I usually happen to play 1-2 student games I really like each year, this time I'm up to SEVEN

Isles of Sea and Sky, Salad Fields, Bonfire Peaks, He Who Watches, A Monster's Expedition, etc (puzzle games you could be playing instead of Order of the Sinking Star)

I gave Braid an A+ back in my press days. I spent 100s of hours working on The Witness at PlayStation, fighting for it, getting it into conferences, and being Jon's personal wrangler. I even coined "Metroidbrainia" after it. I will not be buying Order of the Sinking Star, and neither should you.

Okay, let's try this again but MAKING SENSE... I do not know is Ablahshikar is a good game yet, but I am compelled. Mesmerized, even. It is poetic and simulatonist equally. A mostly-ASCII game about ship salvaging in an arabesque world - equal Caves of Qud and Sunless Sea. There is a large demo.

you already know (after some delay) what's up (steam sale rec thread is what's up) as always, i focus primarily on older, obscure, or just plain weirder games, as big name titles don't tend to need the help. with that said, onwards!

I'm trying to make a text adventure that is also a mind palace and resting place for carefully salvaged, mostly cringey, possibly undead writing from 20 years ago. I'm keen to hear about text games that do a really good job of instilling a navigable and memorable 3D landscape or structure.
