I resigned from ExxonMobil today. I spent the last three years doing fossil fuel extraction research at both BP and ExxonMobil. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing to maximize extraction while the window to act closes, and gambling with our lives. More below.

you can tell Claude writes great code because every website in 2026 has an ever-increasing frequency of timeouts, blank pages, weird errors, and downtime. imagine a carpenter telling you "use this or get left behind" and they hand you a hammer that hits your hand instead of the nail 20% of the time

Ross Douthat lives in...Connecticut. To be fair, I haven't been there recently, but did I miss its "civic and educational collapse?"

It’s remarkable how persistent this myth is. German democracy survived hyperinflation; it did not survive mass unemployment in the 1939s. It would be better to say this the other way round: because German leaders are conservative, they remember hyperinflation. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

i'm really proud of this policy. it's not perfect, but i think it's close to the best that was possible given all the constraints. i'm excited that this will make things easier for mods and reviewers, and hopeful that it will spark change in Rust's governance. blog.rust-lang.org/inside-rust/...

This is ridiculously scary. Yes, we are currently talking about ballrooms and reflecting pools and inflation and Iran and Venezuela and Epstein and crypto grift and the moral rot of the GOP. But all that is going to be forgotten soon. Shit is about to get real, as they say.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Everyone's comparing Nolan's Odyssey to Homer, but I think there's much more richness The ancient Greeks adapted the Odyssey into ART While these images might appear static to us, I want to walk through how an ancient Greek saw art: AS DYNAMIC STORYTELLING like our films 1/13

Looks like Mayor Z's pied a terre tax is not collapsing the real estate market or causing the wealthy to flee Manhattan after all. Indeed, the opposite. Who could have possibly imagined this scenario? www.realtor.com/news/trends/...

Also, there have to have been Munchkin kapos helping the East Witch administer the place, and I can't imagine that things ended well for them after Dorothy left town.

tired of the "#1 dad" nonsense. if you're a dad, stop treating it like a joke and post your actual national dad ranking. i'm # 492,018, which is actually really high up there, but more importantly it lets me enter ranked dad lobbies where i can get matched up for fistfights with dads of my caliber

jesus tapdancing christ dude. jesus, mary, and chain what are they doing over there

The co-founder of Ubisoft died in a tragic accident and the NYT somehow feels the need to spend a lengthy paragraph of the obituary debating whether having a black main character for a recent game was "DEI". Incredible work.

Poor Tom, that eats the swimming frog, the toad, the tadpole, the wall-newt, and the water; that in the fury of his heart, when the foul fiend rages, eats cow-dung for sallets; swallows the old rat and the ditch-dog; drinks the green mantle of the standing pool

I’m sorry, no. This is not the guy who did the reflecting pool. No. Come on. We’re just putting a hat on a hat here. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/18/u...

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an anti-fascist German Lutheran pastor who opposed Hitler and the Nazi Party so effectively that they murdered him in 1945. He is only a bad guy if you literally spend all your time on far-right, neo-Nazi websites and have pickled your brain in fascist group chats.

Rep. Brandon Gill: "We particularly need the left to tone down the rhetoric ... somebody is gonna listen and believe they are the next Dietrich Bonhoeffer and act on that and that's what we're seeing here."

Actual quote by a guy on our local online message board, arguing that the t-shirt & slogan for the town’s annual 4th of July parade was too woke & anti-Trump: "I for one do not want to see a 4th of July parade celebrating revolutionary resistance."

obviously i dont think anyone should have to live in constant fear of a madman emerging from a crowd to blow them away. i just think some people should live in constant fear of entire crowds surging as one, swallowing them whole and leaving no recognizable trace. like a sort of immune response 😀

Hypothetical: you get a CV from a young developer. Excellent grades from a good school, solid experience in bunch of interesting languages, oss contributions and some cool personal projects, worked with large codebases, etc. Also claims to be a “Proficient liar.” Do you hire them?
