"teaching is improv theater, not a paint-by-numbers exercise". Exactly this. More yes/and than a scripted lesson could hope to contain. 🤣

Earlier today, I weighed in on the Great Instructional Debates of 2026 by sharing my mental model of effective instruction. You can make of it what you will, but make sure to check the reflective and insightful comment left by @biblioracle.bsky.social about his own teaching.

To be fair, the teacher might have been perplexed if she’d described her daughter as an outside-the-box thinker with great synergies who’s hitting all her KPIs.

110 years ago, on the 26th of October 1916, birth control activist Margaret Sanger was arrested after handing a pamphlet to an undercover policewoman. After bailing out of jail, she went back to assisting women at the birth control clinic she had opened earlier that month. #otd #history 🗃️

ive talked on how i wont engage with writers who use ai, i wont eat at a restaurant with an ai menu, i wont have anything to do with it. but what this post illustrates is regardless of how OTHERS react, ultimately the worst part about using ai is that you are punishing YOURSELF and dont even know it

When young people mobilise and go vote, then change can happen to better the world.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

Social investment in universities to independently pursue knowledge for its own sake is the greatest driver of innovation we've every known. That is *the* message, and our leaders aren't doing nearly enough to help policy makers understand it.

Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

Sorry, but the Golden Girls all worked for a living? They moved in together because of financial precarity and caring responsibilities following divorce and death. To frame contemporary women considering this model as silly idealists is misogynistic and ageist.

A seriously good Wella comb i was talked into buying during my first ever salon haircut in 1998 (£10). It was such an uncharacteristically decandent purchase for me. I've used it literally every day since the, and it's still going strong. That hairdresser was right, and I still think of him fondly!

What item has given you best value in terms of use? I bought a secondhand Herman-Miller Aeron chair for about £500 in ~2009. Must have used it nearly every day since. Reckon it has another fifteen years in it.

The whole world no longer smells like cigarettes.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

'all these conversations do is provide the semblance of negotiation while AI gets ever more entrenched in the administrative and educational activities of a university'.

"We are past the phase of adopting industry-supplied hype (“AI is inevitable”) and are now in the phase of industry-supplied resistance. Industry loves a conversation. So long nothing changes or pauses while we’re having it." sonjadrimmer.com/blog-1/2026/...

'[Fisher] coined the term “market Stalinism”, a phrase that neatly captures the bureaucratic prose Watson describes: a leaden, grey language arising from a disjunction between what is being said and what is being done. The lexicon of the modern university arises in the same fashion'. 🔥

I’ve just had a lovely wholesome trip to Elizabeth Gaskell’s house in Manchester with my second year gender students. We got to have a really good tour of some of the rooms & then cake & tea afterwards. The only drama was the weather & trains.
