“I thought the timing was really interesting too — the morning after the election. Obviously they’re trying to get attention after the election, and make people think that this is the start of a new regime or something.” @jenstden.bsky.social for @thetyee.cathetyee.ca/News/2026/10...
Ottawa is ramming through its Building Canada "Strong" Act. This Trumpian act would allow major projects like ports and pipelines to circumvent key parts of environmental laws that protect endangered species, critical habitats and frontline communities. Write your MP: https://dsfdn.org/3W9FiUa
White supremacists at the Legislature. A Nazi flag in Saanich. I am horrified & heartbroken for BC’s marginalized communities.
We stand with everyone targeted by this hate, and will fight tirelessly for a province where everyone can live a safe, dignified life.
I felt strongly already in 2024, in a way that I could not fully rationally articulate even to myself, that the global far-right tide which had begun in 2015-2016 was far closer to its end than its beginning. In 2026, I believe we have definitive proof of its ebb. Slow, uneven, but clear.
Important to see Lorne Doerkson builds his cabinet, as this is still two parties in one. Does he welcome moderates like Milobar who left the party? Does he lean on party stalwarts like Halford? Or people like Dew, who tried to stick it out under Findlay? Are populists welcome at the table?
After a group of white supremacists gathered at the BC Legislature the morning after the election, I asked premier-to-be Lorne Doerkson about the incident and his plan to fight hate - you can read more about that here: thetyee.ca/News/2026/10...

Sure I’m upset with the BC NDP for calling this election and other things. But I understand order of magnitude. My frustration with them isn’t within the same galaxy as my concern with handing a blank check of power to an extremist BC Conservative Party that hasn’t even picked their REAL leader yet.
It's not confirmed Aaron Gunn will run/be acclaimed BC Conservative leader—but it seems likely.
It would explain the bizarre announcement from Doerkson that there would be no election night scrum.
If this bait & switch happens, it calls the legitimacy of the BC election into question. #bcpoli
The BC Conservatives are promising to repeal the NDP's multiplex mandate (and possibly the "transit-oriented areas" too) & replace them with "locally developed Official Community Plans that
carry appropriate density targets." Let's dig into what this could mean...
1/10
1. It's distressing how little Doerkson has engaged with the media.
2. It's unfortunate that the media has not called him to account as much as ducking the press deserves.
3. #2 is heavily influenced by the NDP triggering an election while municipal elections were underway.
Since 2016, London’s cycling network has grown fivefold, from 90 to 450 kilometres.
The results? 1.5 million daily cycle journeys—a 43% increase since 2019—twice as many bikes as cars on City of London streets during the day, and motor traffic in steady decline—having fallen 25% in the same period.
Saw a weird amount of this with the municipal election this time around.
Although one incumbent who declined an interview to focus on their "base" got like 12% so not sure how effective it was
It's incredible how much time the NDP has spent on press releases given that it couldn't find an MLA to answer my questions for this story.
The only thing worse was the Conservatives, who said knocking on individual doors was prioritized over talking to reporters
thetyee.ca/News/2026/10...
I’m a sucker for this kind of storytelling and Jeremy is exceptional with it. It’s just pure distilled *curiosity* about the world just outside our doorstep. I believe, once all is said and done, that curiosity is probably all life is about.
A million North Carolinians have voted in this year’s election. One of them—just one!—cast a ballot from Antarctica.
I found him. And I found out how he did it. www.ncrabbithole.com/p/one-person...
Compulsory heterosexuality in schools is more ideological than acknowledging queer people exist. Erasure will always be more ideological than acknowledging and accurately making space for the stuff that exists in real life.
Vancouver's new mayor and council can ignore this bad faith scapegoating plebiscite and instead, address reality
improve people's material conditions: housing, incomes, food
The door-knocking excuse/focus is notable. Parties keep trying to do end runs around the media, seemingly unaware that thousands of people read these stories and talking to a reporter for 15 minutes might actually be a pretty darn efficient use of their time.
Queer organizations SAGAH and @queermomentum.ca are warning voters about anti-trans rhetoric and voting history from the B.C. Conservatives. And, uh, they've compiled a pretty concerning list of things the party leader and members have been up to.

Yesterday’s announcement that the Carney government will delay vehicle emissions standards steepens the climb to reach its own commitments on electric vehicles, affordability, and energy security.

BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson voted to allow bills: calling for the ban of gender-affirming care for minors; prohibiting youth from using new names & pronouns in school; abolishing the human rights code. @michellegamage.bsky.social for @thetyee.cathetyee.ca/News/2026/10...
I will note that in @tcitiesdispatch.bsky.social published questionnaires for the Tri-Cities' *four* ridings, only *one* BC Conservative candidate responded despite being given five days to do so.
I mean, I'm 63, and I know people like this. And if you think you're going to live to 58 or 63 or 76 or whatever and shit's *not* going to change and you're *not* going to have to learn new things along the way, well (throws up hands in despair/exasperation).
And the answer to this is to tell anyone who invites us to commiserate about The Kids These Days or Oww My Hemorrhoids or I'm Too Old to Learn Things to directly and emphatically fuck themselves.
Also, I fking love learning new stuff — not only things or facts, but ways of living and working. If I've been doing something wrong, cool, show me how to do it right. It's awesome and my fellow oldsters should try it sometime.
This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding bikes, yet 66% of people did so while driving. And perhaps even more importantly, if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid.com
David Eby went looking for an expanded majority government. He might end up finding himself and his party on the opposition benches after Saturday. And they have nobody to blame but themselves. #bcpoliwww.nationalobserver.com/2026/10/21/o...
Anti-immigrant sentiment in Alberta has hit a majority, and that province is hardly an outlier. That's what happens when we fail to blame a lack of planning and instead blame people who are just trying to find a place to live securely.

This is how you do it.
Frame automatic traffic cameras as a safety solution (which they are), and ignore drivers who get mad that they can no longer break the law with impunity.
“…the Villages Plan, as clunky as it was, should give folks a little bit of a signal where we probably need to go, which I think is four- to six-storey, wood-framed construction, single egress staircase apartments. We need to build a lot more of that because we can build that faster and cheaper.”

From December 8 to 11, you can set out eligible household batteries for pick-up the day after your regular curbside collection day. Since batteries should never be placed in the trash, this program provides a safe, convenient method of disposal.

Vancouver's new mayor and council can ignore this bad faith scapegoating plebiscite and instead, address reality
improve people's material conditions: housing, incomes, food
Just in: In Vancouver's "public safety plebiscite," voters supported both measures by margins of more than 2-to-1, despite roundly rejecting ABC, the party that added the questions to the ballot.
Now up to Green-COPE-OneCity majority council how to deal with these non-binding results.
We live in a culture that dehumanizes and delegitimizes bike riders and normalizes hatred towards them for merely causing occasional short delays in someone's drive. And the product of this is as clear as day: More impatient drivers, more intolerance, more crashes, more injuries, more deaths.
Some BC government webpages and online services will be temporarily offline today as a precaution following a new global cybersecurity vulnerability.
Teams are working to restore services as soon as possible. We're sorry for the disruption, and thank you for your patience.
I know no one gives a F about safety or the law when the province is involved - but those workers & police should be wearing PPE for this work.
Did they cover the catchbasins?
Did they warn residents to close windows?
The city would never get away with this.
