If you want to know what's happening in the Israeli election, @timesofisrael.com's liveblog is a good place to be

timesofisrael.comAmid record turnout, election panel rejects bid by Netanyahu and allies to extend votingCentral Elections Committee says polling stations will stay open after 10 p.m. if people are waiting in line * Turnout at 66.7% as of 6 p.m., highest in recorded history for this hour * Netanyahu warn...

Israel turnout update: 66.7% as of 6pm (polls are open until 10pm local time, after which the lines close and the polls close after the last voter in line as of 10pm has voted) WILD turnout. For comparison, 66.6% is the highest turnout rate in Federal elections since at least 2002

AIPAC shutting down its PAC doesn’t solve the deeper problems with their strategy: Equating support for Israel with unquestioning support for its government, and pouring dark money into elections with little transparency. 1/2

Yet another example of Trump's long history of saying that Jews are "disloyal" or shameful if they do not vote for him or his chosen candidates. According to him, one can only be a real American Jew if they support Israel specifically by voting for him and his picks.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Trump on El-Sayed: "Any Jewish person that supports this guy should be ashamed of themselves. I'll tell you right now, you should never speak to them again. I'm polling at 99% in Israel. I cannot understand how anybody who's Jewish can even think about voting for this guy."

To somewhat push back: the Israeli electoral system is fine, actually. The trend the thread describes of personality vehicle parties is real, but it obscures the origin of it. It's not inherent to the system - it only emerged after Sharon broke Likud during the Gaza Disengagement.

Abigail Nussbaum@abigailnussbaum.bsky.social

This is a good primer on Israel's political situation going into tomorrow's election. But I'd like to go deeper on something he only touches on, which is that part of the reason for Israel's electoral doldrums (and resulting geopolitical chaos) is its broken political system bsky.app/profile/avis...

(As an aside, this is but one of the ways in which an overexposure to American news, politics, and online conversation has harmed Israeli discourse. When Israelis talk about alternatives to the current political system, the only thing they seem able to imagine is a US-style presidency.)

There hasn’t been a trend of kids of Russian origin getting targeted here because of Ukraine. Or kids of Chinese origin getting targeted because of Xinjiang. But there has been a massive surge in Jewish kids getting targeted because of Gaza. Mehdi seems to want to pretend that’s fine.

People of Owen Jones political persuasion have for a long time tried to delegitimise any Jewish grievance when it comes to antisemitism, because the think it might justify an argument for Israel as a safe haven. He's now genuinely claiming that even antisemitism isn't just about Jews.

For people wondering why The Canary has come to grief, I have an example. In April, I was due to cover the trial of the men eventually convicted of arson offences against then-PM Sir Keir Starmer. The trial was listed to start on April 27. But it started with two days' jury selection and legal stuff

A young man asked Abdul-El Sayed if he would disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. The tense exchange has turned into a highlight for the Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan. Here’s what happened.

This is pretty insidious, because it uses a video to make it seem legitimate. But the video is in Hebrew, so anyone relying on the translation must assume this is what he actually said. It is not. The parenthetical "there is no crime" is fabricated. So yes, it's antisemitic. Onto my list they go

The most absurd part of the “antizionism is not antisemitism” catechism is that it’s invariably recited in anticipation of, or in response to, a Jewish person saying “that’s antisemitic” & any good-faith movement would respond by asking “how can we be antizionist w/out being antisemitic?”

We are horrified by this plot and relieved no one was hurt. We stand with Hindu and Indian Americans. No one should fear being murdered at prayer. The white supremacist behind it targeted Jews and Black people too, as often happens. Showing up for others is how we protect ourselves.

This was out of line. Criticizing foreign investment and real estate, including Israeli investment, is fair game. But it's not fair game to frame Israeli investments as part of a broader narrative about global domination and the root of society’s problems.
