It's insane that the campaign against El-Sayed is basically that he has some secret relationship with the people that the president's family has a secret relationship with.

Again I say, the scam economy is consuming the political will to fight authoritarianism.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

This comports well with my hypothesis that people don't think the economy is bad so much as evil

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

I’m telling you that the extreme exposure to scams is a big part of the reason so many people are negative about our economic future.

If you’re an author who’s been receiving verbose AI scam emails on a daily basis, and you’re wondering how gullible and ego-driven people think you are, this article helps to explain them. Sadly, they are successful enough to have been built into a big business. www.thedial.world/articles/new...

Advocates for people with incarcerated family say prisons often cancel visits for what they deem is excessive contact with loved ones. “There are so many other experiences like that where just a simple hug or a peck is constituted as excessive contact.”

Interesting thought: - Governor Moore was elected Governor in November 2022 - ChatGPT became commonly available and popular in November 2022 No one would have known at the time to ask "Are you pro-generative AI/LLMs" but I wonder how important that question is moving forward

I must say, “so-and-so led with contempt instead of curiosity” at least twice a week to explain why I don’t work with someone or like someone or trust someone. It’s vital.

I totally agree. One of the things I probably say the most in my practice is the importance of being adaptable. That and curiosity are such essential emotional and intellectual muscles that are often atrophied in many people

I had my students analyze art today and two women were filling out a handout and asked out to spell “guillotine”. I said “we haven’t read that word in class yet so it’s a hard one.” The other said “I thought it’d be spelled like creatine.” The words they encounter are very different than us

Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

the Cornell case should make us question prosecutors and police all the time: the same DA offices discounting college students’ sexual assault cases (the lacking investigations, the disbelief) are happy to jail countless women for far less, day in and day out, when most people aren’t watching

I participated in some public library ai courses. I’m telling you that the state of literacies and the complexity of lives deeply enmeshed in the bowels of late stage capitalism cannot find a use case for an agent & if they could, people don’t have the scaffolding to imagine one that could be useful

saxtoltl.bsky.social reposted

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.
