I get they're inextricably intertwined but I kind of feel like leaning so much into how he was the longtime best buddy of the world's most notorious sex criminal has given it something of the feel of a political gotcha rather than the important part, which is that the president raped people.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

“Illiberal democracy”? Competitive authoritarianism”? What other relative neologisms are available?

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

As I've said, this is either an impeachable offense that Democrats act on or it's a new precedent.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Leaving aside the rampaging elephant in the room of the degradation of access to the Library's collections since the cyberattack, my main question on reading this is why historians are still posting on X, a platform that incites violence against humans of many 'sorts' and monetises misogyny.

Here's the imbalance at the heart of the paper. Over 3 years, the books catalog grew 38x cumulatively. The book's revenue? Only 9x quarterly. Way more books fighting over a pie that barely grew which means the average book earns less than it used to. (4/n)

Substantial-AI books are everywhere: 1 in 5 in our sample, every genre from romance to sci-fi. Each sells far fewer copies than a typical non-AI one. But there are so many that as a group they're up from ~0% of sales in early 2023 to ~20% now, and ~1/3 of new bestseller entrants have AI text. (3/n)

thinking fondly again of the college girl at the donut place, who made a little muslim boy bounce giddily out the door after she told him his donut was free, and who waved me away and said "you're good" when it was my turn to pay and then, when asked if there was a deal that day said "i hate my job"

Mollick's book is titled "Co-Existence," but I'm here to tell you that you do not need to co-exist with AI if you do not want to. You can live a perfectly good life without allowing AI into it at all. To the extent that society and institutions are wedging it into our lives, shame on all of us, but

Our college uses a product called “Circle-In.” It’s abysmal, but now its CEO is reaching out to students and, in effect, urging them to ignore classroom bans on the use of AI. This is deeply disturbing and grounds for banning Circle In from your campus. This could hurt students.

Good lord. Read this whole thread. This administration has just built a corruption pipeline. What a fucking mess.

Musk would do this through those f*cking Trump Accounts they opened in every child's name without parental consent. I HATE these SO much. Parents cannot close the accounts. Parents cannot reject donations to the accounts. And we must hold on to donations for at least 5 years. I'm a state lawmaker.

The rank corruption these accounts enable astounds me. Because, again, PARENTS CANNOT REJECT THE DONATIONS. Now, Elon Musk could donate $1 billion of stock to my daughter's account and I would still fight every damn day to keep nudification banned. But you all have to just *trust* me.

Elon Musk would only need to change one vote in each chamber to kill AI chatbot regulation. Today -- right now -- corporations could be donating lifechanging amounts of stocks to the accounts of legislators' children and we can't stop them. Not the public, and not the lawmakers who are parents.

My 4 yr old daughter has an account, opened without our consent. The maximum amount of money any person can donate to my campaign is $1,000. The limit to what a corporation can donate to our daughter's account: none. Every corporation with business before the MN Legislature can now donate stocks...

Monopoly power and politics of code means Gen Ai makes the user legible without ever becoming legible to the user. (In fact thats AI’s entire value proposition — make know without being known.) Literacy cannot overcome that kind of architecture of secrecy.

Let me repeat that: to stay in business, hotels need to be on Expedia. To stay in business on Expedia, hotels have to raise their prices to pay Expedia's junk fees, but they have to raise their prices everywhere else.
