I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

If you haven't already, 1. Make a plan to vote, 2. Study your ballot this weekend, 3. Help your family and friends make plans too (e.g. can you take them to the polls/vote centers or drop off their ballots?) 4. Ask them to pass it forward.

Speaking from my field, environmental law, we actually are making so much progress despite all the news: renewable energies are more affordable than ever before and the technology keeps improving We also DID manage to eliminate the +6, +5, +4 degrees scenarios in 20 years: we need to keep going !!

In 1990, about 20 million animals a year were euthanized in kill shelters. Today, over half the shelters in the US are designated no-kill and less than 500,000 animals are euthanized.

Indoor smoking bans. Those of you on the younger side have no idea how pervasive it was to go out to a restaurant, a bar, even a flight and be bombarded with second hand smoke. It was awful. So glad it is gone.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Audio based entertainment. I grew up listening to tapes of The Green Hornet. For a long time there was almost nothing like that. And it was so difficult to take it anywhere. Now, Podcasts exist! There are hundreds of great programs. Also, audiobooks are way more accessible and plentiful.

I'm hearing talks about increases of 25-30% in health insurance next year. Our rates have basically doubled in three years because the GOP took a wrecking ball to insurance. Never let them claim they're the party of small business again.

I still think AI systems should be paying me 150k per copyright violation. People keep asking me 'what laws do we need for AI?' and I keep saying 'enforce the fucking ones we already have!' There are copyright laws that should be being enforced right now that just... aren't. B/c it's billionaires.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Once again I found an article that seems great but is locked behind a $7 paywall. Bloggers, you gotta give me a one time cheaper option. $7 is too much to read one article. For a monthly fee, fine, but we all know I don't want a whole month of articles. I want ONE. $3 is reasonable.

$7 is like the cost of a novella ebook. I pay $5/mo for extra episodes of podcasts I like. A whole damn newspaper is $5 or less. Your price is too high. And a special fuck you to the sites who only offer a yearly subscription for $70-150

Anyway I'm extra annoyed at this site because they did offer a free option under the article so I gave them my email and then the site was like "lol actually that article you wanted is only for PAID subscribers" so now I feel tricked and disinclined to give that site any money, ever.

Spoilers in here for the ending of the new Carrie series... I was already wary of it based on some of the criticisms I've seen, but seeing the changes made to the ending... Wow. I have liked Flanagan's previous shows but way to miss the fucking point of this fantastic, horrifying story.

Seems like Flanagan could have just made an original horror with this story and not pretended it was at all related to Carrie? I guess I understand the critiques of his previous work now, since I watched and enjoyed them without having seen/read most of the originals

piggybacking off this: the most powerful sales technique in the world, for pretty much all of human history, has been word of mouth. If you like something someone made, TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Tell everyone. Leave reviews. Repost. Talk about it. Link to it and link to the artist. We depend on YOU.

It’s depressing to see schools use AI to create flyers, banners, & t-shirts. When I was in high school the faculty would come to the art department to have students create these things. I learned so many skills that have followed me my entire professional life. That’s what I thought school was for.

I took a benadryl before my Covid shot on Friday and my arm was WAY less sore and I was much less tired than previous shots. Worth a try if the shot routinely kicks your ass.

This is the dose/timing for pre-vaccination: bsky.app/profile/raha... Fexofenadine is pharmacologically more complicated than cetirizine/loratidine and I can literally never remember the conversion factor and timing adjustments (and it's a PITA to look up).

When I was in high school, every classmate's mother had a horror story about an alley or a secret clinic somewhere, blood and terror and sometimes women dying in the effort to control their own futures. Abortion saves lives.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

The reason abortion is popular right now is that roughly three generations of women have had access to it and we all know someone (possibly ourselves) whose life has been saved by it.

I lasted 2 months at a job that told me in the interview it was NOT a call center and turned out to be... basically a call center. The manager seemed determined to bully me and I had multiple anxiety attacks at work. Probably should have left sooner tbh.

Not to sound like an old man yelling at clouds but the climate today of “if this makes me personally uncomfortable then it MUST be morally wrong somehow” when it comes to sex or kink or any sort of alternative lifestyle is so incredibly dangerous. You can just not like a thing and it’s fine.

Tired Art Goblin reposted

Anyway it’s shit like this why you need to vocally support kinksters and pornographers even if you yourself don’t make or even like NSFW content. It’s why kicking Kink out of Pride is dangerous. They won’t stop at banning what you personally think is gross, they won’t stop until YOU’RE illegal.
