China’s first AI-generated theatrical film, ‘Sanxingdui: Future Past’, has bombed at their domestic box office, only making $121,000 USD against a budget of $1.5M USD. In contrast, the crudely animated ‘Niu Lai’ made nearly $10M USD against a budget of $200-500 USD.

we have to think so much less about finding the right candidates and so much more about building political power that makes individual candidates simple stewards of the will of the bases they are accountable to

Honestly a pretty good bit for Bill Gates of all people to be out here talking about the new world order. Maybe he just wants conspiracy chatter to drown out the well documented Epstein connections of him and other Microsoft execs.

The Verge@theverge.com

Bill Gates thinks we need to prepare for roughly two decades of AI disruption, and he says this period could be so painful it might split society in two — between people comfortable living near the technological frontier, and those who reject it. Read, watch, or listen: buff.ly/5e6qf4M

I have never seen coverage of a live trial, one involving allegations of multiple sex attacks on multiple women, framed in a more distasteful way. It's not 'Fame under fire' it's a rape trial. And it involves actual women. And this from the *checks notes* BBC

The city of Portland does everything it can to stop people from driving except fund transit and the people of Portland do everything they can not to drive except take transit.

Someone needs to remind these decrepit fucks what happens to collaborators

Aleksandra Vaca@transiticsnews.com

Colorado & Michigan have become the latest blue states to end Medicaid coverage for trans youth. Solidly blue Colorado will also be IMMEDIATELY shutting off care for all trans kids receiving puberty blockers—despite Trump's rule allowing a 6 month ‘tapering’ period. This is a complete betrayal.

i do not meaningfully care about this argument but my stance remains: i refuse to generate unpaid content for elon musk the child pornographer, and to model the behavior that lets elon's algorithm show me the optimal unpaid content he wants me to see. it's interesting that you want to do that though

Every time I go home the decay becomes harder to ignore, but I can sit out in my parents’ gazebo in the summertime and hear the laughter of the Somali kids playing in the cul-de-sac that I used to play in and I can see a future there. I hope they get to see that future despite and to spite Tom Emmer

yes a key difference between the maga cult and the centrist cult is that the maga cult alternate reality exists in order to let them do heinous things and the centrist cult exists in order to let them not do anything bsky.app/profile/offt...

The difference is they know their world isn’t real, they’re just immensely scared of what that means

So many tech execs are either solipsistic tweakers or skinsuit guys, it was almost nice hearing such a genuine, old-fashioned dirtbag work his craft. He is so gifted at cynical virtuelessness it could be art if he wasn't so openly contemptuous of that too.

This is a good person, totally decent. Just also totally unaware that their media diet (and thus their brain) has been completely cooked to where they're amplifying media by fucking Nazis and passing it along as if that's normal. Sometimes I despair about how we return from this.

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

This clip from Katie Nolan on @pablo.show captures the vibe perfectly. It's been decades of stories where the villains and bad faith are obvious, but no one ever faces consequences.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

Maybe the reason the economic vibes are so off isn't that things are *worse* than the great recession but because back then we all thought the pain was temporary, whereas the things that are wrong with the economy today have all been getting worse for a long time and show no signs of improving

I dunno, if you meet someone who calls himself an Archduke I think you're pretty much always morally right to shoot that guy.
