Democrats needing to message on affordability as the country endures a brutal authoritarian takeover is tragic. Take it from someone who lives in occupied Minneapolis. Our problems go deeper than prices.

If they do want to keep on messaging on affordability, at least they could explain what would happen to affordability if Europe and the rest of the world start dumping US debt following Trump's insanity on tariffs and wars.

If I had photoshop skills, I'd take 'this is fine/fire dog' meme, add some armed masked goons kneeling on necks & battering doors to the fire, and change the dog's words to 'our issue is affordability '

100% Every single person who chose not to vote for Harris/Walz or not vote at all in 2024 has serious questions to answer as to where their basic priorities lie. Tough shit if this is unfair, but you self-centered assholes are to blame.

And it’s not like it has to be one over the other! If they tried, they could form a cohesive argument that most Americans already agree on. The absolute worst thing they could do is turn a blind eye

The Democrats who voted to fund your problems: Don Davis of North Carolina Tom Suozzi of New York Henry Cuellar of Texas Vicente Gonzalez of Texas Laura Gillen of New York Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington Jared Golden of Maine

Dem leadership is 100% reactive. Led around on a leash by what outdated polls say is important. They fail to recognize that they have power to *create* the narrative, to decide what it important, to take the goddamn leash and start leading rather than following. Always 10 steps behind.

That is the best line I've read today. It was a crystallizing moment, wasn't it? In conjunction with everyone wanting to film themselves talking and the handy internet as a method of decimating their internal dialogue made digital. Really miss the hippies.

It's so stupid. No matter how wrong the perception is, Americans by and large believe that the GOP is better for the economy, and Dems are better for civil rights. Why are they fighting the uphill battle when the GOP is handing them an easy win?

Not only justice. People actually voted for him despite this. Perhaps because they were information poor, perhaps because the media didn’t get this out far & loud enough…or maybe they just don’t care

This seems like an incredibly stupid time to rage at the only viable pathway out of the shit we are in. When will people realize we must champion the Democratic Party. Tearing them down worked so well in the last election.

I simply don’t understand this. Dems *literally* just helped secure enough votes to KEEP US IN THE SHIT WE’RE IN. THAT’S why people are raging. They’re actively BLOCKING the pathway 🤷🏽

I hope you guys find your way out of this. If you do, serious reforms are in order. We need them too because this can happen in any country. Time to put the power where it belongs and that's not with oligarchs who don't give a damn what happens to people on the ground.

Less affordable, the more unemployment there is, the more terrorizing there is, the more republicans are able to recruit ICE thugs. Soon if they have not already started, republicans will offer immigrants safety if they become ICE. This is a false safety, republicans will come for everyone

I'd run ads showing citizens with busted in doors and car windows with this: They promised to make life more affordable. But the cost of healthcare, rent and food just keep going up. And, now they've stuck you with the bill for this, too.

It pisses me off the shit they are wasting our time with. This is all hands on deck and get the felon and every single one of his co-conspirators. They literally can't figure out why their approval numbers are lower than a dictators 😳

But Aaron, that would require #DumpChuckSchumer and #DumpHakeemJeffries to change and, for the first time in their lives, be effective warriors rather than rotting heads of lettuce.

"Any authoritarian (Trump) doesn't need your votes anymore. So he doesn't care how big your electric bill is, he doesn't care that you're paying the tariff on your car repairs. We need your vote, so we will cut the corporate profits which cost you $ everyday."

And seven Democrats in the House voted to keep funding it. Why should anybody vote for them? The time to fight back against this is now, not after some imaginary victory in a midterms that will offer them absolutely no more leverage than they have now against a regime that does what it pleases.

The other issue is that with voters, especially Asian and Hispanic - the issue is not ICE as an institution. The issue is how Trump has perverted ICE now. Which is why "demand more training" polls much better with those groups than it does the activist class. Plus, it's a possibility.

I think dem politicians would be the first to agree that our problems extend past affordability. But look at '24. Look at polls. That is clearly *the* issue. Sure, one can talk about other issues. But that has to be the face until something changes.

Everything becomes unaffordable under tyrannical rule. The priority has to be to sustain Democracy, even if it means undemocratic behaviour during this wartime. Look around at the so many nations who have been run into extreme poverty by the wannabe “King god”

I’m sure you’re aware that affordability is what is affecting 100% of Americans. Not everyone even is aware of the tragedies happening in Minnesota. It’s not on everyone’s radar and democrats will do both. Good grief. 90% of America is not on this app but they are buying food & voted accordingly

Dems are always behind on messaging because the entire media system is there to support right wing talking points. This is what the GOP has been working towards for decades. Most of that country doesn’t know or care what is happening in MN and that is the real tragedy.

It's insanity. Almost as culpable as the MAGA perpetrators, the Dem elected officials bypass the fact the administration is waging war on our USA by ICE murdering thugs. Bypass Venezuela was invaded to steal oil on the whim of a seditious pedophile. Bypass he has threaten our allies for extortion.

They really need to message on how this is a Republican problem and stop blaming it all on Trump. If they don't, his enablers will continue to get elected and continue to treat their oaths as optional.

yes, and it's great to focus solely on that if you're running for mayor or even governor. but all campaigning is pandering, and while most folks are disgusted by this, it's not affecting them or their families personally (yet) on national scale. sorry, being more blunt than usual today.

I am encountering this in my campaign. It is deeply accepted throughout the Democratic Party organization, down to the county level, and it is tragic. I'm trying to shake that up.

I think part of this is that people are disillusioned by the last election, and they've actually started to believe that the general public will accept fascism so long as the price of eggs doesn't go up. But it's factually wrong, and it's deeply defeatist.

Yeah given the empirical evidence of "Jan 6th was literally televised" and that didn't even slow Republicans down, and then "We all literally know he wants to be a dictator cause he said it on camera" I can't really blame them. They SHOULD fight, but it's still extremely bad.

I mean we did literally have an election where appeal 1A from Democrats was "this guy is a criminal psycho who wants to do fascism" and then Americans were like "Ooookay but prices went up a bunch 2 1/2 years ago soooo you can see how im in a bind here..."

Where people are meeting fascism it is DEEPLY inspiring, and generally this admin is failing miserably - But I spent all last year believing Americans would do the right thing and what I learned is the group of Americans that swing elections is dominated by people who's heads live in their asses

No, Democrats. They don't approve of it, but they're feeling like they don't know how to fight back. Seriously, people are bruised by the 2024 election, and it has gotten inside their heads.

And yet, look at Mamdani and, a separate issue, Mamdani hype. It's "affordability" with an occasional nod to "Fascism". But asking for a meeting with Trump, a fascist, receiving the meeting, and making statements on cooperation "on affordability" is perfectly fine, "cos "affordability!"

I called both my senators (Schumer & Gillibrand) yesterday and said: please let me worry about my family’s kitchen table, and you worry about the executive branch refusing to faithfully execute the laws

Millions of Americans would vote for Putin and would support a dictatorship if he wrote them a large check. The "economy" is really the only thing most Americans care about - everything else is secondary.

I’m a #xenial so I do NOT understand millennials, gen x or z! Can someone explain why we’re allowing this to happen?!?! Why can’t all you fuckers get it together and save us!

Indeed. There’s an obvious temptation to focus on affordability in isolation. The coherent pro-democracy narrative Democrats must message, however, is that Trumpism is worsening every aspect of American life, from our rights and freedoms to affordability to our security. It’s all interconnected.

Once again, Democrats (looking at you @amyklobuchar.com) talk about the right thing at the wrong time. People in Minnesota aren't just concerned about grocery prices, they're concerned about leaving their homes to even go to the grocery store.

Of course. They're feckless corporatists, but it does represent how Mamdani forced them to shift left on their politics which is a welcomed change compared to the usual rightward drift.

I can't yet imagine what you folks are going through. The silence and lack of anything whatsoever from the dems is unconscionable. I don't give a fuck about my grocery bill when their are actual brownshirts in US neighborhoods.

key is meeting ppl where they are, and rn voters are feeling pain and outrage from both prices/$$ and ICE brutality/authoritarian overreach. in any case, if Ds can't turn the current situation into an electoral slaughter we need to disown them for real

Yes, and it means that they will have no real reform mandate if they ever regain power. Structural democratic reforms, possibly including a Constitutional Amendment, are the only thing that can prevent a further slide. The problem is not Trump, he is the symptom.

I don't know any progressive who doesn't agree with that. But those in Democratic leadership sure dont. And this is my problem, I can't support Democrats anymore. They're weak and feckless. We need to clear the board because we can't live like this anymore.

We need to break through the echo chamber. Somehow we need the half of the country who refuse to acknowledge what’s going on to face it, and you’re doing so much to make that happen. I feel like the momentum is building. I hope and pray for safety for you and yours.

You should probably be talking about the 77 million majority that voted for this because of affordability. Also PLENTY of Dems have been sounding the alarm in Minneapolis.

they're an unwieldy org that can't do sudden turns. 3 months ago Mamdani won big on actual affordability issues. that Dems aren't a nazi fighting team but an electioneering group makes them pretty unsuited to the task at hand, just as most opposition parties are when the fascist ascend to power.

We may need to start messaging about preserving our democracy altogether. I am so sorry for all that Minnesota is enduring. May your communities and state make it to the other side with no more harm.

AOC understood the assignment. It's both. All of it. Americans are horrified by DHS Gestapo tactics but they're also choosing between healthcare, rent, and food. See the zillion LinkedIn posts by people terrified of AI layoffs or they've been out of work for a year and about to lose their homes.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that a pol from WASHINGTON caved on this. I GREW UP in Seattle, and it used to be one of the best-educated places in the COUNTRY. Mumble mumble decades later, that's obviously changed, or how else could this CUNT have been voted into office??

And begin calling tariffs “import taxes” because ppl really don’t seem to understand that is precisely what they are. Or that “no taxation without representation” was about tariffs.

But you have to face up to the country as it really is, not as we hoped it would be. After Trump, the racism and the selfishness will remain in the hearts of millions of Americans. Democrats have to focus on delivering on common interests, e.g., affordability.

It's interesting that they needed to hammer affordability in 2024 as a chief issue, but focused on how evil Trump was. Now affordability is still a massive problem that must be addressed, but they're paralyzed by the wrong lesson from '24 and refuse to attack him or ICE as hard as they need to

Could they at least come up with a good message. So far their messenge is just that prices are high. We know things are expensive. We don't need rich Congressmen telling us things are expensive. What exactly are Dems going to do about it.

That's what I don't get. How can they be running on affordability when their only message is they Trump didn't fix it. They don't have a plan or even any ideas about how to make housing/childcare/healthcare more affordable. Even if they win they'll be voted out in 2 years for failing to deliver.

A great many of our problems stem from Citizens United and deregulation. It wouldn't solve all our problems, but it would be a great place to start. Corporations have too many ways to corrupt the system.

Given what ICE has been doing in American cities, the DHS funding bill, without exaggeration, is a means to fund domestic terrorism. Every politician who voted for it knows this and supports terrorism. Every person who votes for them again must know this and be comfortable enabling terrorism.

I feel like there's no one in the driver's seat of the Democratic party. They've been following their polling, focus groups, and advisors for so long that they've forgotten how to lead. Their corporate donors are disinterested, because they're enjoying the tax breaks. It's maddening.

7 of them voted to pass the funding bill today. no one wants to challenge congressional leaders. if the dems take the house and senate so what? why should we be happy about that? they've given us 0 reasons for hope

Well the cost of right wing authoritarianism and fascism in general is always high, in every sense, so there's that. Hitler's basic approach to supplying social services was taking things via the Blitzkrieg, because the social system he had built was not really self sustaining.

Democrats are only doing the talking points their handlers aka rich donors will allow. Once we realize their donors are two sides of the same coin as Republicans donors, then we can get over the betrayal and realize this is a Class War. Chaos create cash and the 1% are robbing the banks.

Democratic leadership needs to be radicalized. As much, if not more, than the radical GOP. This whole “bipartisan consensus” and “focus group emphasizes affordability “ BS has to stop. We are fighting for our basic, inalienable rights here.

Dems seem satisfied to be the lesser of two evils. They could be heroes and have much of the country rallying behind them. Instead, we get norms and traditions and dilly dallying over whether we should fund the racist, misogynist, child stealing, face shooters.

There is not need to have one message We have to meet all the moments. I think they make a mistake if they only have one message. They need to stay loud and get all the messaging out.

This is true and has always been true. The message of read project 2025 and Trump will kill people did not work for Harris Because people believed other people were going to eat their pets. Yeah we are in a bit of a messaging pickle. Cause nonsense is now "true".

Gen X & Gen Z need to work together on messaging. Boomers and millennials have flooded the zone with their like minded cruelty & casual violence. *not all …

I’ll say it again: I don’t care who the opponent is, I’ll vote for the candidate who actionably & aggressively stands up to this regime…period. The pt is to get DJT & GOP & cronies anywhere they’re hiding OUT.OF.POWER. It’s the only thing that matters Purity tests r gonna blow the opposition up.

So much deeper. The question remains, who in America is paying attention? Minneapolis and Minnesotans are on the front line. Protecting, donating and giving what we can but, who else is with us? Jeffries could not even whip his party to stop further DHS funding, let alone stopping BWCA destruction!

I’m getting to the point where I not only want every Republican’s head on a pike but also that of every do-nothing Democrat who acts as if everything is normal and downplays the real crisis at hand, thus becoming an accomplice to this evil.

There’s a very long list of horrifically destructive issues we must grapple with. I suppose they are all rooted in corruption. An intention so corrupt that it is destroying everything in sight.

It must be pretty obvious that rank and file dem voters are overwhelmingly anti-ICE. Seems like political malpractice to dismiss them. How many did they lose with this move? Just to appease cop lovers who would never vote for them no matter how much they suck up. Stupid fuckers.

It’s news polling. Heard it numerous times on the news in the last few weeks that affordability is the biggest concern. I posted about it when I was frustrated. Basically saying what you said. Where is that coming from? Trumpers? They’re the only ones who cared about the price of eggs. So upsetting.

Dems need to talk about average Americans *suffering* under trump's presidency, contrasting with the ultrawealthy, the ballrooms and parties, the corruption and grift. trump has always been the villain. Make it stick.

Unfortunately we live with a huge swath of either uninformed non voters and rage voters living in a Fox News bubble. Sadly, that’s not likely to change.

I don’t know. The affordability issue may get those Biden republicans back in 2026 2028. Maybe even Trumpers who don’t have anyone else to vote for. Everyone else is so enraged by what’s happening with ICE we don’t need some Democratic lawmaker to tell us to be angry.

Please keep saying that. Over and over. And, that we can handle more than one message at a time. It’s ok and good to talk about affordability but also to acknowledge and emphasize that however “affordable “, if our “house” is on fire it won’t make a difference.
