Let's run the math. Start with a 2x8x8 board. You can get 8 equal 8-foot long shims that are roughly 2"x1" (slightly less than 1" due to loss from cutting). Cut those in half and you have 16 pieces of wood for signage. That wood costs $8-16 depending on store. So at most $1 for the wood. Peanuts.
