I would love to tell him about the many late-diagnosed adults I work with, including people 50+ and the months-to-years long wait lists older people face for testing. He is deeply ignorant and, worse, incapable of the curiosity and flexibility needed to learn just how fucking wrong he is.

It’s not unusual for adults to bring children for evaluation, and once it is diagnosed in children, for the family to consider that parents and even grandparents have had these traits. Some will go on to be diagnosed as adults.

Many people can be 'quirky' or otherwise different without being anywhere near the autism spectrum. One reason there is a 'surge' is for so many mistaken diagnoses and self diagnoses being treated as real. Another reason is more attn to the autism category - which is both positive and negative.

Anecdotal, but illustrative: My mother taught elementary for some thirty years. She watched the autism and ADHD diagnoses skyrocket…but observed no major change to children’s behaviour. They were just classified and diagnosed differently.
