Currently working on one of my favorite pieces ever: The Hater’s Guide To Oracle. This company is so stupid and Larry Ellison has bet the farm on OpenAI having $300 billion to give it over five years. Larry Ellison is H.R. Geiger’s Jerry Stiller and he’s rigged his company to blow

There are few things I'd like to see more than a penniless, filthy and disheveled Larry Ellison, wearing a dirty old oak barrel, living on the street and begging for money.

I've worked with people who worked at Oracle. It sounds like a Glengarry Glenn Ross kind of environment. I've also worked with people who have used their software, and I've yet to meet anyone who finds it a good experience.

The original oracle database product is pretty good at some things. Absolutely painful to live with but it has some decent features for an rdbms that others still can't match. Still not worth it in any way.

The latest batch of comic-book villains like Musk and Zuckerberg distracted us from the old-school monsters like Ellison and Marc Andreessen, so rightfully loathed in the 1990s.

I think one of my favorite things about entrusting anything financial to Sam Altman and OpenAI is that Altman himself has said he has absolutely no idea how to make money with "AI", but he hopes the "AI" will figure it out for him.

That’s a very good question! It does make a lot of money so I guess they could sell it or beg Silver Lake or MGX or ByteDance for cash. Honestly not sure who keeps the revenue from it either. Either way it’s gonna run out of money at some point and the question is when bsky.app/profile/bean...

Even if this happens it would burn the stock alive and Ellison’s net worth along with it. It would also require a way to make the $240bn in lease payments while. It would also be for literally one company. Political poison even for Trump, and hard to do financially bsky.app/profile/6min...

What do you make of the possibility that these fools are deemed "too big to fail", and the public bails them out?

He burned his Hawaiian island to the ground. It follows the pattern: 6 ex-wives, personality disorders, sued for funding genocide, largest antitrust trial in US history, insider trading, holding Project 2025's database, moving hos company to Texas, polluting the planet, & a truly, terrible human.

An Oracle story from the view of a startup attorney: 1/ In enterprise tech agreements, large customers will often seek to restrict the ability of the vendor to assign the contract. Their theory is ‘we are signing a deal with you because we want to deal with you, not someone else.’

2/ when you’re a startup, though, you want to preserve the right to exit into an acquisition which, under the laws of some states (or the terms of some M&A transactions) could be construed as an assignment.

I really dont know if they have the money, let alone the political capital to even try. These aren't banks, this happened before, the sums are literally insane and the companies are black holes that produce nothing but inept PR and slop.

I'm with you on how irredeemable the AI industry is. But the sheer capital flowing into AI construction is functionally keeping the US out of recession, the "magnificent seven" are carrying the stock market, and the AI bosses have Trump admin connections.

Here's a hypothetical: the AI bubble bursts and all the big tech companies are facing huge losses. The government decides to repeat TARP with the same amount of money adjusted for inflation, about $700B. They pick you to decide where to spend it to do the most good. Where do you put it?

After a couple of years in a "red stack" environment with everything Oracle, I will never forget much less forgive them. One trip to see Larry on his favorite keynote stage was more than I needed in this life... 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Is this going to be on your newsletter? I haven't subscribed yet but I will definitely pay money to read someone badmouth the guy who ruined Sun Microsystems, MySQL, DEC, Java, Metasolv, & Thinking Machines

When the Ellisons bought Paramount, ai cancelled my subscription, but they haven’t seem d to notice, however many months later, I’m still watching it for free. These people are completely inept.

Worked for Sun then Oracle after the acquisition. Made it 2 years before I bailed. It was miserable. They started right off by taking our Field Service car allowance, which wasn't really much money -- $500 per month. That was just the beginning.

TBH, I think Oracle's future is tied to Trump, if Trump fails so will Oracle cause I think only Trump will give them a bail out in the next year or two. Without that level of gov support, Oracle is going to explode just like you are saying.

Oracle's only real innovation in the last 20 years has been increasingly hostile licensing terms and more invasive audits. That's all they have. Not surprising that Larry is trying to find another golden goos.

Oracle's database product has a few things that are quite good. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, because you'd have to buy it from Oracle. But I can see how it could be recommended. Nothing good seems to happen to the things they buy up.

Ellison sucks, but I wonder why he's decided to be hyper-aggressive about everything all at once. Hubris, thinking he might as well before he dies, age impacting his judgement, wanting to seize the political moment? I hope he lives to see it all blow up, whatever the case.

Cerner was a falling knife when Larry reached out. They were great at working the client's executives. Not so good at software. Still remember the time an executive got himself locked drunk and naked outside his hotel room in KC.
