Appreciate this may not be a universally popular opinion but the less you treat BlueSky as a crusade or cause, and the more you position it as simply a superior user experience with a better governance approach, the more sustainable the growth will be.

Causal reasoning: You're pitching a change from one little app for sharing thought bubbles to another, not rallying the troops for a final advance across the razorwire into the gates of hell. If this place weren't a better user experience, loathing for Musk would not be enough to sustain it.

Point taken about not changing the world 😝 But plurality of media and neutrality of networks are real public goods. In helping to (collectively) create a network of critical mass, we are all contributing to their creation.

I guess my point is, if you consider the average user are they more interested in: a) Having a positive experience on social media; b) Participating in the holy work of creating a critical mass network to rival Twitter. And is there any chance leaning into (b) will alienate group (a).

Agree. As much as I am happy to see my X-fighters moving gradually into Bluesky, I am happy to be here for the happier things in life too. I missed them. Mushrooms, jokes, cats and animals, art, photos, anything where I can learn, and share and laugh. Bluesky is a sharescape for happiness too

I meant to add I agree with this article. To make Blue Sky work in the long run we need a mix of views along the political spectrum. We don't need the vitriol and damaging algorithms that the dark place actively encourages.

If they don't come here to troll and grift and bring their awful followers to do the same, fine. Constructive criticism is good and the DFL party definitely needs a renovation.

To be successful it will need to be an open place for discussion. It doesn’t need to go to the extremes of X where racial slurs are accepted, but healthy open mindedness is needed to not become a cult like echo chamber.

Agreed! I'm very interested in words and language, so editors and lexicographers are people I like to follow— BUT, Some of them on Bluesky seem to see it as a platform for promoting a social or political agenda, which is not what interests me.

I don’t see a problem with having a fascism free zone.I don’t see why I must defend not engaging with Nazis.Personally,I preferred living in a time where such views were anathema to civilized society.Bluesky represents a reclamation of our right to shun destructive elements, nothing more, nothing les

Not my intention at all, I moved here from twitter to be in an area of less stress with the same people I follow on Twitter and now the bots are trying to make life miserable here too so we must block them.

I never really a had a Twitter account, but I am seeing quite a few accounts posting about hitting their old numbers or pumping up their numbers beyond or so on. I kind of hate that viewpoint because it feels like these people are addicted.

Totally agree. Positioning BlueSky as a better user experience with smarter governance is key to sustainable growth. Framing it as a cause risks alienating users who just want a functional, enjoyable platform without the baggage of a crusade. Simplicity wins.

Agree, Dmitry. It's an option and alternative to consider. I still find value on Twitter (X), but didn't jump on #Bluesky as some kind of #SocialMedia savior ... hope it's a place to share info/humor/sarcasm, have healthy debates and build meaningful connections. TBD. www.npr.org/2024/11/19/g...

npr.orgTraffic on Bluesky, an X competitor, is up 500% since the election. How will they handle the surge?Unlike other social media sites, Bluesky allows users to create their own algorithm. The site does not have ads, nor harvest data for artificial intelligence training. But it is still very small, and it does not make money.

Yep, can’t disagree it much better, just got work on migrating the non political users over, a few more major celebrities would see a stampede away from there, also getting football clubs etc

I'm encouraging entertainment creators and their followers via Bandwagon Effect to migrate here. I know a few fandoms that are currently transitioning. If we can get the biggest names in different sectors to leave X, many will follow and it will be diverse. Some are just cuz the "Block" feature.

Yes, indeed. I think the excessive exuberance is temporary - and understandable in view of the increasingly unpleasant "X" experience? Most of the exuberance is froth and will calm down of its own accord, but I agree there is a danger of disappointment in some quarters?

I disagree. The world needs a pro-democracy social media platform that protects the human rights of its constituents and actively targets violent extremists, bot nets, fascist and communist oligarchs, and information warfare by hostile foreign actors.

I stopped using SoMe because it was all fucking horrible to use. Rage baiting, bad faith and algorithms to push both I started using Bsky because it's interesting, sometimes fun, arguments are usually in good faith - and if they ain't I got a block button that I'm not shy with

Agree 100%. And PLEASE let conservatives get attracted to this platform, so opinions can be challenged on both sides in a civil and fair way. This is the platform for that, since content seems to be moderated and users/trolls trying to drag this place down to a cess pit level as X are downweighed.

I have a different take on this, while appreciating yours. I've studied how organizations and movements begin and develop. It takes setting yourself apart at the beginning and those passionate, sometimes crazy people, to build momentum. Only later does mainstream assimilation help. Not early.

When you look at the trend of just about every successful organization or movement, it starts with the passion. Then people turn it into a more mainstreamed phenomenon. Then, it goes through cycles of assimilation and returning to the crazier, more unique foundations, on an ongoing basis.

Just very respectfully, I do not characterise this as a movement. We're using one social media platform over another. We may be doing it in part for political or ideological reasons, but I just don't think that makes us the Suffragettes, you know?

It's okay to see this differently. I definitely see patterns of collective behavior, small or large, as the basis of any organization or movement. Anything we do collectively requires a certain kind of thinking and coming together. But, maybe this is a different case. There are no set rules. :)

It is a “superior user experience” and place to share ideas about government but also to easily connect with other interests as well such as science, history and technology. For once, I feel like I am surrounded by smart people.

I've been patiently waiting for people to shut up about "the other place" and other euphemisms for a while but it seems with the influx the chant begins again. Can we all get on with talking about cool, interesting things please? Like, what do you think of the new DMG? ;)

I don’t really care if Musk own it (despite the fact I don’t like him). I just want it to work better than Twitter does now. And I want to not be throttled because I don’t pay for a subscription.

If he is manipulating the platform to boost certain segments (which it seems like he did), then that is certainly a reason to prefer other platforms. But the fact that he owns it isn’t by itself something, that makes me want to leave as a protest against him or something.

💯 I can’t stand listening to all the “BlueSky is the resistance” b.s.. I’m aligned with the Democrats and resisting the emergent authoritarians, but that’s not why I’m here. We need ethical and responsive social utilities with good governance.

The problem is with a lot of people’s idea of “diversity of thought”. For me it’s opinions coming from different viewpoints that make me think while for them it’s that the earth isn’t a sphere and Chuck Schumer has a weather machine.

It's already gotten much more ideologically diverse in recent days, but with less snark, insults, engagement farming & conflict for the sake of scoring influence points. People are welcome to come & say their piece -- but no one owes them attention.

Worth mentioning that there are a bunch of technical details (basically, the at protocol) that mean that it can never go downhill the way Twitter has, but I agree that's still firmly in the second bucket

I may be reading the room incorrectly. However, the way I see it, the maga young white men just raised the level of difficulty 10X when it comes to getting laid. The handmaiden hotties go all in only for the alpha billionaires, celebrities, pro athletes. Everyone else - Not So Much. 👀

Honestly it’s just a better platform without mentioning politics. There isn’t ads on every post. There isn’t the blue checkmark irrelevant people you have to scroll past in every comment section. It’s free to get all the same access and exposure

There is something to finding something akin to a safe haven. When you feel like everything is being taken away from you, finding someplace that you feel safe is invaluable. Blue sky is not a crusade, but it does feel like a rallying point.

I agree its great to not have the hateful chaos that twitter became but before that twitter wasn't simply an echo chamber and was better for not being so. 'Better governance' as you will be what secures it's future (and a news feed that can be geographically determined)

Good point--I've been going back to the xwitter thing less and less, but still did today. I think I need the anger adrenaline and I'm with drawing from the poison. I need to disengage from certain environments and not just create a new nasty one.
