followup to dream phone design, took some ideas from people I liked. It's not designed for everyone but it's designed for me specifically and I'm mad it doesn't (and will likely never) exist

That is (at least for me) all I would want from a phone. The headphone jack missing from all modern phones always has me fuming, not to mention lack of micro SD slot.

My only real critical feedback is a transparent back of phone. Unless you never use phone cases, in which case, you are a very bold and brave man whose confidence I can never hope to match.

Oooorrrr.... Hear me out... Make it a long running campaign and include monthly best open source designs in video close outs. Get people thinking about taking back innovation from corpo AI pushers

May I introduce you to the Cat S61 ? It doesn't tick all your boxes, but it feels like a decent starting point. Also, according to the manual, the sim tray doesn't need the pointy thingy.

Not designed for everyone? I bet most people I know if jot everyone, would pay large for it. He'll, if it has good on-boarx accessibility features then I'd stab someone for this design.

Honestly I love it! IMO some of the worst things that happened to phones was the removal of expandable storage, and the headphone jack. I feel like the rubberized corners are kinda brilliant.

Make the phone a little thicker so the battery lasts at least 2 days and it'd happily pay $100+ for a mid-tier spec phone exactly like this. Phones are too thin and are hard to hold these days...

Heck yeah, bring back cell phone charms! I made this rabbit one. Your cellphone designs are wonderful, JoCat. There's a few degoogled phones like the Brax phone and the Librem phones that have this personal, modular design philosophy. I have GrapheneOS on my Google Pixel Pro 10 and I love it.

I wish we could apply this same design philosophy to cars too, or everything else for that matter. no more trying to make things look futuristic. Take what works from modern tech, throw out what doesn't in order to make a practical product, and for the love of god, stop relying on touch screens

I remember a long time ago some companies, or groups of people (I don't recall), had modular cellphones that you could build with the hardware you liked I don't know if it still exists but it was such a good idea

There is currently the fairphone which is kinda in the direction you are thinking but it the real first modular design that got promoted was an google phone that never came out

The clear plastic back is PERFECT my CD player in high school had that and it was my favorite thing to put pictures of my favorite bands in their UGH I miss analog personalization sometimes

As an infosec analyst, just want to caveat that you absolutely want software updates. If it's "de-googled" then feature bloat is a non issue, so getting those security updates is a must. People really underestimate the dangers of using devices with unpatched operating systems on the internet.

In absolute terms yes, in practical terms no. Realistically, the average person will only ever face opportunistic cyber threats (going to the wrong site, clicking on the wrong thing, opening malicious attachments, installing a malicious app, supply chain attacks, etc).

If you were a politician, business exec, journalist etc who might be at risk from targeted attacks where physical or proximity cyber threats are a concern then yea, i wouldn't recommend using older devices, even feature phones, and you probably shouldn't use bluetooth in any capacity.

I hope we get more devices like this in the future. I miss tactile buttons, I miss things not needing constant updates that end up causing them to become obsolete.

The rubber corners are a rough idea to me because most rubbers will age poorly and fall off. Itd be better to have the rubber bumpers part of the replaceable back. The camera is also a mechanical weak spot. Cool but easy to break. Glad you're having fun dreaming up phones tho.

Thank god a place for a strap loop. I super love that a gobbo is implied but *man* straps make accessibility so much nicer. It reminds me of my lil htc aria. Replaceable battery and back plate especially. And og my lord an SD card.

i really like almost everything on this, the hinge camera is a no for me because something like that is bound to eventually breaking or having problems. other than that, maybe an aluminum body instead of plastic? i just got used to the feeling lol. everything else is really good and i would buy!

Reminds me vaguely of the self-repairable HMD phones with swappable parts and expansion pins, even offered a toolkit so that the community could come up with their own extra features utilizing said pins. Didn't seem to go much anywhere unfortunately; apparently no longer sold much anywhere

Unihertz has some designs that come close to this, but yeah I can't think of any that fill all the check boxes The one thing I'd want to add is a slide-out physical keyboard because fuck we need to go back

I think ideally you'd want the camera flap to flip down as it would be working against gravity, if the hinge goes then you'd be wrestling to keep it up whereas if it goes down it wouldn't even need as stiff of a hinge. Tbh, why the heck aren't these on all phone cases already?

Now if only this could be made but even if it did I'm stuck bumming off my moms phone plan and she's a diehard apple fan.

This kinds of posts remind me of Google Block back in the day. They had planned to make modular smartphone, using a main circuit panel and "blocks" to swap in and out stuff like batteries, cameras, more RAM, etc. Then it went... *POOF*

Other than the hinge up camera, (and maybe the degoogled os? Unclear) this is probably broadly possible by way of building something that'd snap into the pins on the back of an HMD fusion?

"No mandatory updates" - I would highly advise against this one. It took a long time to get Android to a point where security updates were a regular thing across all device manufacturer. The problem is feature releases vs security updates. Separate the two, and it would be probably what you want.

Personally, I would swap the flip camera for modern phone cameras and at least 256GB of storage, since I take a lot of pictures. Mostly because I would be so worried about breaking the flipping camera. It is cool looking, though.

It’s just a sign that our modern culture sucks that there’s not a thriving market for custom made electronics like phones and even PC building is a niche skill rather than a job. People used to get hand made jackets and things, but now it’s hellishly hard to find someone to do that.

I'll be 100% honest. I would buy that phone. This is an OPTIMAL design. No all tactical. Everything is easy to use outside (sim card and such) this is what we need ! face thing no need i use digit print but doesnt work since my fingers are always battered or cuts due to work.

I’ll never understand the phasing out of phone charms; it’s literally an excuse to sell us more plastic crap and make phones more unwieldy for pockets (thus selling more purses); you’d think crapitalism would be all OVER that!!

I have this little cynical thought that while capitalism is about selling shit, the ending overall goal is control. So, yes, it would be an excuse to sell more shit, but that would be selling what you want, not what they want to sell you.

Excellent design! My only criticism is that it would probably be better in the long run to get a front-facing camera. That hinge WILL break, and it WILL be a pain in the ass to fix. Kinda the same reason why you don't see the clam shell design nowadays...

Yes absolutely! Love the design. But because tech companies are clueless and out of touch they’ll get some dipshit “everyman” for their market research instead and we’ll end up with the smartphone version of “The Homer.” It’ll have a rotary phone interface and a film camera.

The hinged camera seems like it'd be the first thing to break, but it does scream "user-repairable" so that probably wouldn't be as big an issue as initially thought. I like it too

This is very close to what the FairPhone already is. I plan to buy one this year. Gonna ditch Android all together and install Mobian Linux. I'll be sure to post my experience with it.

I'd have to fight you on the "no mandatory updates" item.... Security updates, especially for what is basically a high-power mobile surveillance platform, are important. However actual OS Security Updates vs "We wanna stuff more shitware on your phone"... yeah

Companies have given up too much of our preferred features all in the name of waterproofing phones, and it doesn't matter because we still do everything we can to keep our phones dry anyway.

Do I think the flip up camera is a realistic idea? No. Do I think its rad as hell? Yeah. Honestly, I think stuff like this is what the tech world is missing. TRYING. Do something different. PLEASE. I wish I had the funds to get a proto-type of this

Does it have access to applications? Because if it does, it unfortunately would need updates for security reasons. Otherwise, I'd prefer it if it just came with the ability to call and text, an agenda, camera and ability to play music. It's what I use my phone for mostly anyway.

Needs WAY more internal storage, the mfr is gonna bloat from looking at it. Also a decent camera would be nice, whenever I get a phone I think "meh, do I NEED a good camera" and 3 months later the answer is YES, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD YES

Honestly only thing i could even add is a finger print scanner bc of bank stuff and even then its still a perfect brick of a phone only issue i can see is the hinge on the camera wearing out over time but even then if its built right thats a non issue. would buy to replace my 8y old phone lol

FUCK YEAH CHARM LOOP! In all honesty, would buy this phone for the removable batter and the fact that it has 2 programmable buttons on it. The flip up camera and transparent back cover are a really neat idea though. Thank you for cursing me with the knowledge that this phone will never exist.

A removable battery will increase the thickness of the phone, which means we can keep the current camera array phones have and have NO CAMERA BUMP! The flip up camera, while a nice feature, would probably end up broken for many users.

Also removable battery means I can get spare batteries and not have to panic and find an outlet or something and fumble around with a charger. A spare battery is far less awkward than cables c getting tangled

There wouldn't be any space for it I imagine but add in a stylus and this would be the perfect phone for me. I just like using a built in stylus with my phones which is why I've stuck with the note series/samsung for so long.

Just a heads up, this is VERY close to Kyocera's design language. I loved my Duraforce and Duraforce Pro 2. It wouldn't surprise me if you could get most of this from them, except the pop out camera and replaceable battery (but that comes with the territory of being IP68).

Clear plastic back is such a cool idea. Printing out a picture of something or someone you love and using that as the back is such a cute idea. Also I want to double down now I no longer want just a headphone jack I also want a 4.4 audio jack for hi-fi audio.

Only thing that seems slightly redundant is having the flashlight flip too. Unless you're taking a selfie in the dark, in which case the screen itself can brighten, you wouldn't want the flashlight to swing back to flashbang you

My two biggest issues is: do we need a headphone jack? Bluetooth headphones have gotten to be insanely good and affordable imo. The other issue I have is my worry things like this would be a “premium product” and thus be unobtainable to the average person which I don’t think is the goal

I would absolutely love more options that support/store a digitizer/pen. AFAIK Samsung is the only one and only on one model, but mine has been invaluable for notes and explainers and the like. I don't need the pen to be a "remote control" just some pressure sensitivity and low lag would be great

Oh I'd be terrorized constantly to break that hinge camera, but it's a very clever design. Beside that, this phone would be absolutely permeable to water so you'd need a cover or just be more careful than usual. I remember cooking my first iPhone (5C) because I kept it in my pocket in the rain
