Apart from the ethics, it seems very strange to me that the might of the Navy would go to a putative war theater and then start to shop for tools. Surely this has been wargamed to death (sorry) -- and procurement and strategy start now?

Just my sense but I see this as cracking the door for Anthropic to “renegotiate” with the DoD. Yes, OpenAI competes with Anthropic. But Sam also understands the long game matters most. Some solidarity is better than lone wolf theory. Will be fascinating to see how this plays in next 48 hrs.

He must have used ChatGPT to make up this post. It confabulated something called the Department of War when everyone know that the official name for the thing that Hegseth “runs” is the Department of Defense.

I guess he doesn’t need to worry about someone paying for it like he started the day saying. Good grief. Apparently it all has to be done on a Friday evening without consideration of consequences or just a plain reality check. I’m sure the former weekend news host is the best evaluator & negotiator

Wouldn’t it be sad if Sam Altman was killed by an autonomous drone launched via his AI? Not to worry though because we have every precaution considered by our Secretary of War (and drunken Christo-fascist fratboy) Pete Hegseth.

Yeah, something's weird about it. And the end, he makes he clear that he's asking DoD to effectively do the same deal with Anthropic, the deal they just screamed about.

Makes no sense cause they’re full of crap. Tons of room to define “domestic mass surveillance” in a confidential appendix G to exclude surveillance of most blue state residents or people who oppose Dear Leader. The weapon thing is bullshit too.

yeah, something's is not right. Maybe Altman just threw a bunch of jargon at Whiskey Pete and he agreed to it. That would of course ascribe good intentions to Altman's actions and ... that is not in keeping with past behavior ... at all.

IDK if you already read it, but @himself.bsky.social has an interesting essay up about this whole mess. One aspect discussed: how the gov't handing off more and more to the private sector leaves them at the mercy of the p.s. This looks like that! At first glance, anyway. bsky.app/profile/hims...

Look, the definition of woke company depends on the last words out of Trump's mouth, which is largely determined by what the last person who spoke to him said. These conversations are what determine what a threat to the supply chain is.

I mean, all we have is Altman's word... and the wording is pretty slimey & unspecific. My guess is anthropic had their red lines locked down contractually and Altman just took assurances the DoD wouldn't do anything "that bad"

IIRC he was also on TV today where he basically said they have the exact same redlines as Anthropic & that even though he disagrees with Anthropic about a lot of stuff he trusts them on ethics issues. So ngl it sounds like a diplomatic "we agree with you agreeing with us so lets move on" comment.

Altman: ‘We signed with the Department of War but don’t worry, they pinky promised us on autonomous weapons.” And five unprompted uses of Department of War/DoW (a legally fictional name) in a single post. Like he was getting paid per mention. FFS.

What exactly does the AI do for the department of war? I am genuinely curious about what is the use case. On an ethical level, of course, it begs the question: is human life so cheap that the richest army in the history of the world can’t afford a private’s wage to extinguish it?

As an educator, the “it’s a dessert toppping/it’s a floor wax” argument that sticks in my mind: If LLMs are intended to democratize knowledge so says Altman, then where does powering autonomous weapon systems advance epistemology in some Golden Age of (Agentic) Enlightenment?

Pretty sure his Alma Mater (prep school) will give him another certificate of achievement for this..., in exchange for a gift of a few more million dollars, of course. Such a wonderful role model for middle school students!

Absolutely unsurprising that anti-human Altman would take the anti-human position

I’m certain this change has nothing to do with OpenAI President Greg Bockman donating $25 mil to MAGA, Inc. Jared Kushner is one of their largest investors too, but I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.

The SkyGPT Funding Bill is passed. The system goes on-line August 4th, 2027. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.
