(1/11) If you live in NY, you’ve probably started seeing a new warning: “THIS PRICE WAS SET BY AN ALGORITHM USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA.” This mandatory disclosure went into effect late last year, and it’s the first attempt by a US state to grapple with a new generation of surveillance pricing.

This stuff has been going on for decades in the travel business. It's certainly taken people a long time to realize it might be favorably regulated. The anti-regulation temperament of America is absurd.

The Repubs are soooo good at propaganda: "Yes, please, take away any regulations that protect me from pollution, or price gouging! Reach for my wallet and give it all to Big Corpo! Hurt me some more, Daddy!" Waste, fraud and abuse are bad. trump accepting giant bribes? prosecuting enemies? so good

imagine standing in front of the pickles and an electronic voice commanding you to remove your mask / glasses so they can figure out who you are in order to decide how much to charge you maybe it's time to avoid Big Grocery. will Aldi and trader Joe's do this, too? The farmer's market??

It would be great if you followed up with some ways for us to thwart this rip-off. Leave our phones home while shopping? Shop in private windows? Wear Covid masks in stores?

Not even going into the questionable ethics of this practice, as a consumer, if I felt like I was being ripped off or taken advantage of, I’d probably avoid that company in the future. I don’t see how this is even a good business practice in the long run unless it feels like a bargain for consumers.

If we don’t explicitly the outlaw, all venues will do it and then you’ll be stuck no matter who you go to with a high price based on them, not liking you basically.

Who's gonna keep this whole thing on the rails when consumers decide not to buy what the gangsters are selling? It seems the greedhead have figured out how to extract everything of value . . . but what if we stop buying? Maybe it will become legal to debit our payment methods whether we buy or not

Me, too! I wonder if the cameras will screen for some cheapskate facial characteristic. Do we have unique frown lines? Or resting skeptic face? I put time into shopping. Price comparisons, shrinkage... I'm the one who abandons stuff in my virtual cart over price. Is it possible I'll be rewarded?

I was just thinking I should start building a cheapskate profile! New side hustle idea - I’m an Online Profile Therapist who can massage your algorithm to maximizing savings. This probably already exists huh.

Those laws have all been torn up. New laws made to prevent states from protecting their own. After musk stole all our data, it felt a bit moot to many of us, I think. the fight seems impossible considering every other right we're losing :/ Overwhelm

People forget how radical Wanamaker’s was at the time. The price tag changed business relations for more than a century and a half.

I bought this flat water bottle after getting ripped off at the Philadelphia airport a few years ago. It was particularly ironic since it was Philadelphia’s John Wanamaker, who introduced price tags to the world in the 1860s: philadelphia.today/2025/08/phil...

Corporations are abusing their own customers, as well as the workers, without whom they wouldn't exist. Shopping local supports your neighbors, not some billionaire. Paying cash saves small businesses money and doesn't tell BigBroTech everything you're buying. Fuck these greedy bastards!

(2/11) You know dynamic pricing—think Uber rides, flights, or concert tickets that surge based on supply and demand. “Surveillance Pricing” takes this to the next level: using your data to set a “price for you” based on your predicted breaking point. This is, increasingly, everywhere.

(3/11) A December 2025 Consumer Reports investigation found that Instacart prices for identical items varied by as much as 23% between different users. Instacart characterizes these discrepancies as routine ‘A/B testing’. www.consumerreports.org/money/questi...

4/11) In 2025, Delta tested “Fetcherr,” reportedly an AI designed to find the highest price before a consumer abandons a purchase. Delta has called that characterisation inaccurate, but on investor calls, execs hyped the tech as a “super analyst” that would end static prices.

Well my abandon point is very low. I’m still mad they were allowed to put those little stickers on produce. I hate buy pre packaged, pre cut produce. Why can’t I buy stalks of broccoli?

(5/11) Walmart, Whole Foods, and Kohls are switching to electronic shelf labels that can display dynamic prices. Kroger deployed them with Microsoft AI—a setup a 2024 Senate inquiry warned could enable “surge pricing” via facial recognition. (Kroger claims it will only lower prices.)

fuuuuck, I wonder if Shipt does that, I noticed their app prices were significantly higher than in-store but I figured they were bumping it up to cover the “free delivery with membership” aspect since the membership fee would cover maybe two runs if they’re paying shoppers ANYTHING reasonable

That’s piss poor legislation if the disclosure is compliant with the info alone that they set the prices dynamically without disclosing how it was calculated 😂
