Guillermo Del Toro dropping another one liner that’s exactly how I feel about AI slop, the “punishment” is built in

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Lots of heroes disappoint you but John Cleese wins hands down. Peter Cook thankfully died before Twitter was invented (I feel he would have loved it)

I'm a paramedic. We need a new emergency service specifically for dealing with mental heath issues. While paramedics like me have basic mental health training, we are still not in the best position to help these people. We try our best but we have too little resources and staff.

The irony that the BBC blurred out the Protect the Dolls slogan on a Strictly contestant’s tshirt for their social accounts as “political” but will happily dedicate a two-part doc to the woman who uses her billions to fund lawsuits to persecute transgender people www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/...

bbc.co.ukTwo-part documentary on J.K. Rowling announced by BBC Factual and BBC ScotlandThe documentary will use her life as a lens through which to explore three decades of profound social, political and technological change

Lost my dad 7 years ago today. I always forget the date, but then end up feeling weird and sad all week. Then I realise what it is. Miss you, you grumpy old bugger x

kind of funny that they clearly wanted this report to justify whatever the government wants to do, and still the best they can rummage up is "They aren't overdiagnosed but they would be, if we started overdiagnosing them"

Mark Grimshaw@markgrimshawtism.bsky.social

A fascinating editorial decision from the BBC, to make the headline a scaremongering “AUTISM AND ADHD ARE BEING OVERDIAGNOSED”, and then, four bullet points later, have the author of the report quoted as essentially saying “nah, that’s bullshit, actually”.

Privatisation in a nutshell: 1) Steal from us something we own. 2) Sell us back an inferior service 3) Charge us a higher price. The pattern is the same everywhere: royal mail, water, railways, the NHS, public services, council services…

Prem Sikka@premnsikka.bsky.social

Failures of privatisation. Royal Mail to cut up to 2,500 jobs Foreign-owned RM doesn't meet letter delivery targets even after regulator lowered them. Postage: 1st class, £1.80, 2nd class 91p. When privatized in 2013: 1st class 60p; 2nd class 50p. Poor service at triple price. Customers fleeced.

Just saw someone say their AI runs their fantasy football team and I can’t stop laughing. Like, I’m sure everyone’s doing it or something but it’s very funny to me that pretending to be a team manager was so hard that you needed to pretend to pretend to be a team manager
